About the Author

She has performed and directed with LA Theatre Works, an organization producing radio plays for NPR, for fifteen years.

WARNING....abridged version

Although I love Pygmalion, this is an ABRIDGED version. Many scenes are not included, particularly at the end of each act. If you want an unabridged version, I would suggest the Penguin Classics edition.

The Evolution of Pygmalion

Pygmalion is a brilliant success by George Bernard Shaw to modernize the legendary Greek tale of a sculptor who falls in love with his artsitic creation and wishes to bring her to life. The rags-to-riches tale of Eliza Doolittle captivates the reader with its fast paced storyline, and witty dialogue. Shaw fascinates the reader with complicated characters such as Henry Higgins, Doolittle, and Colonel Pickering. Set in England, during a period of sophistication and elegance, Higgins and Pickering were faced with the seemingly impossible task of transforming a filthy flower girl (Eliza) into a beautiful duchess. The outrageous antics that ensue are both humorous and entertaining. Shaw's playful dialogue and timeless plot have been updated to fit the social and cultural standards of our time. For example, Alan Jay Lerner's My Fair Lady is an internationally acclaimed musical adaptation of Shaw's classic play. 1999 brought yet another adaptation of Pygmalion, in the form of the film She's All That, penned by R. Lee Fleming Jr. This teen comedy brings a new twist to the classic characters of Shaw's play. Pygmalion is a quick read and an enjoyable way to spend the day, and the characters in the story will remain with you forever.

Two-fer-one: the play and the musical

This is a really nice edition since it has George Bernard Shaw's original text AND the script of Lerner and Loewe's musical adaptation, including the lyrics. I actually read the play in the Simon and Schuster paperback edition and followed each act by reading this book's My Fair Lady; the lyrics are a lot of fun to read, just as they were fun to hear in the movie or the soundtrack or on the stage.

While I was reading Pygmalion, Henry Higgins comes across as even more insufferable than the character as depicted by Rex Harrison. But Shaw was trying to make a point in his play -- actually, several points -- about the English language. For example, the Publisher's Note in this edition quotes Shaw in 1902 discussing what he emphatically states as the stupid, unnecessary use of apostrophes in such words as won't, can't, haven't, etc., and it strikes me that in today's abbreviated computer-speak (lol, omg, etc.) his desire is finally come to pass. Oh well, it only took a hundred years.

But the use of apostrophes is just one point made seriously but humorously in both play and musical, and you really need to read both to understand the full message about the use of language and "types" of people, including Eliza's father, not to mention the Conclusion to the play not widely known by the non-readers among us. I thought both the play and the musical were delightful and this is a wonderful edition because it includes the full text of both, but the Simon and Schuster edition has Shaw's complete Epilogue.

Beware... this is not a new book. Having said that I will add, that it is rather two good books that for some mysterious reason have been placed together in one cover. The books have no common theme even if the titles suggest it. The books were first published several years ago and when I saw the new title I immedeately reread them, they were worth it, however they are not among my favourites by Jayne so the old ones are not yet worn out, and thus I have no need to buy it yet. Check your shelf, if you like Jayne, and they are not yet there, this is a good buy otherwise forget it.

Not since Treasure (1988), when Dirk Pitt discovered Cleopatra's barge in Texas (or was it on the Mississippi Delta?), has Cussler come up with so far-fetched a story as this herein, the tenth Pitt novel. The plot begins with a Confederate ironclad, the Texas, outrunning a Union blockade while carrying on board not only the South's treasury but also the North's kidnapped president. Then, in 1931, world-famed aviatrix Kitty Mannock (an Amelia Earhart clone) vanishes on a flight over the Sahara, her plane or body never seen again. Then comes Dirk Pitt's 1996 search through the Nile bottom (via image-making computerized sonar) for the lost barge of a pharaoh dead some 2500 years. Dirk locates the barge under many meters of silt; but before he can even make the Egyptian authorities aware of the find, he's reassigned by the National Underwater and Marine Agency to investigate the source of poisons that are killing coral and creating a red tide on such a massive scale that the world's oxygen supply will soon shrink to an unlivable level if the horror can't be reversed. Dirk rescues from assassination and falls for beautiful Eva Rojas of the World Health Organization, who is in Africa to find the source of the fatal plague now turning thousands of natives into bands of frenzied cannibals who'll eat anything human and are fearless of gunfire. Whence this malignancy? As Pitt discovers, the country of Mali- -backed by a ruthless French industrialist--is in the solar nuclear waste disposal business, but the bad guys have poisoned the water table with their inept methods and befouling of the Niger. How does this tie in with Kitty Mannock's desert crash and her discovery of the Texas buried in the Sahara sands? The Big Stone Gap Trilogy

I Loved these stories my first book by A. Trigiani was Queen of the Big time after that book I was hooked...just a like a smoker to nicotine I can't wait until she writes another book...I love these books because it keep you wanting more...to hear about more of her family and her friends...you want to be one of those people...when I read A. Trigiani book I can see the grass, the mountains, smell the air the flowers and taste the food....Her story have everything life has in it the good and bad and the ungly and her stories does not end with falling in love and living happy ever after...The emotions are so strong in her stories you find yourself becoming a member of the family she is talking about....you feel her pain and joy.

I have loved this Trilogy and then loved it's follow-up, HOME TO BIG STONE GAP. Now I eagerly await Adriana's next novel, BELLA ROSA, due to be published and distributed in 2008. I guess once again we'll be in Greenwich Village, N.Y. as we were in LUCIA LUCIA. Of course, I would have welcomed a fifth in the BIG STONE GAP series since I got to know all the wonderful characters
and got involved in their lives. Couldn't we be part of Ave Maria's "golden
years"? What would have happened to Jack Mac, Iva Lou, Fleeta and all the
rest I wonder. When a series of novels is written and brings joy to a reader's literary life it's hard to accept that it's over. .....then again, maybe it's not.

As in her debut novel, Why Girls Are Weird (2003), Ribon's central character is a bouncy and articulate twentysomething struggling to find her niche in the world. Belinda Bernstein, aka Benny, has an art history degree and works in a travel agency in Los Angeles, where she followed her actor boyfriend, who is now out of the picture. When her mother breaks her leg and loses her job, Benny returns to Virginia to help out, abandoning her current boyfriend in the process. There she finds her widowed mother juggling three suitors and Jami, Benny's younger sister, "dating another gangbanger." Benny adds to this manic mix by carrying on a flirtatious relationship with her mother's yardman, who has a master's degree yet sounds like a hillbilly. Another mystery is why Jami keeps going back to her abusive boyfriend. I didn't want this book to end!!! Ms. Ribon brilliantly wove together epiphanous parallels between mother and daughter that were as heartbreaking as they were hilarious. I truly fell in love with these characters and can't wait to read her next novel!!

Funny, Unique, and Moving Family Drama

Why Moms Are Weird will appeal to anyone who's experienced the infuriating push/pull love/hate relationship between mother and daughter, and Pamela Ribon captures it brilliantly with her narrator Benny, aka "Boobs." She manages to relate the family's history, quirks, and complicated relationships in a way that lets the story naturally unfold. Benny's narration shows us how out of place she's felt within her family, first because of her weight, and later because of living so far away from Virginia, in Los Angeles, and just feeling removed.

In just a few crisp sentences, Ribon captures the heart of maternal criticism, and why it can sting so much:

"The words hit me in waves as I dissect layers of passive-aggressie, backhanded complimenting. I can chip away and chip away, but I'll never stop finding additional ways to be humiliated back into the fetal position." or

"Our fights quickly escalate into yelling. I don't know how she can get me so angry so quickly. When I feel slighted by my mother, when she accuses me of being wrong when I know I'm right, there isn't a decibel loud enough to make me feel relief."

By allowing Benny's mother room to have her say, Ribon allows readers to see how they differ in their memories and intentions. Even when her mother's boyfriend makes an obviously racist remark, Ribon shows how, to his mind, that is not what he intended, and the reader has plenty to mull over as each feisty, headstrong, quirky character battles it out for the supremacy of their point of view.

While we start off hearing all about why Benny hates her mother and might someday kill her, the real story here is one of love, between parents and children, sisters, and friends. It's about Benny finding herself and figuring out who she is both independently of her family, and as a part of them. No character here is a saint; all have major flaws and have made major mistakes, but when push comes to shove (sometimes literally), they're there for each other.

Ribon also shows that nobody else can decide your fate for you. Jami, Benny's sister, repeatedly falls for the most loser guys, the ones who practically have a warning of "will treat you like crap" on them, but Jami likes the drama and goes back for more over and over, and it's both heartbreaking but incredibly honest to watch her family try to cope with her self-destructive behavior.

There is also the matter of Benny's love interests, which Ribon handles with an emotional intensity and insight that's rare. She shows two men who fall hard for Benny, as well as Benny's mixed feelings, and keeps us guessing until the end about what her final decision will be.

Why Moms Are Weird is intensely funny, but underneath the humor, Benny's struggles are relatable, entertaining, and emotionally honest. I look forward to reading more of Ribon's work (next up is Why Girls Are Weird, yes, I started backwards).

A totally different read from "Why Girls are Weird"...

Having read Ribon's first novel -- as well as years of "Television Without Pity" recaps -- I was expecting something in a similar vein. Although "Moms" has the same conversational flow and humorous moments, it delves into more serious (and often unresolved) conflicts with protagonist Belinda "Benny" Bernstein. Like many twenty-somethings, Benny faces tremendous self-esteem issues, largely due to her upbringing. Because of them, she has trouble finding a place for herself in the world...both with family and potential boyfriends, as well as society as a whole.

After returning home to Virginia to help her incapacitated mother, Benny begins trying to solve her problems -- as well as those of her mother and ne'er-do-well younger sister Jami. But as she quickly learns, they don't necessarily *want* her help. As frustrating as it may be, Benny attempts to face up to the fact that some situations must either resolve themselves eventually, or simply continue unraveled as long as her family members permit.

While I didn't enjoy this book as much as "Girls," Ribon's writing style overall makes any book an enjoyable read. I'll be waiting for news of a third book.

Introduction

After I turned in my selections of wonderful stories for Elisa and Paula to judge for this year's anthology, Elisa and I were discussing ideas for my introduction. She suggested that maybe I should talk about the fortieth anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series.

My initial reaction was: Forty years? Wow. That's fantastic!

Then a second thought came to mind. That's not possible. I'm not that old.

But I am. I can recall every Friday evening during my high school years. I would always be home to watch Star Trek. (Okay, that should give you a pretty good idea of what my social life was like when I was a teenager, but let's not go there.) Suffice it to say, Star Trek was an important element in my life during those years.

In hindsight, I realize that the reason I would insist on watching the show every week was clear: I didn't like being where I was during those high school years. What kid really does? Star Trek gave me an escape, in much the same fashion as the shelves and shelves of Andre Norton, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Robert Heinlein books in my basement bedroom. Star Trek and all of those other books took me out of that house -- out of that teenage life that everybody hates -- to strange new places, distant planets, and awesome adventures. Science fiction, with its wonderful worlds, futures, and messages of hope, was what I turned to for a few hours of not thinking about the world around me. More importantly, though, it let me believe that a better future was possible.

Remember the world in which Star Trek was born? The cities of this country were going up in flames, and bombs were going off so often that only the regional ones were reported. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Bobby Kennedy were shot. Nixon was elected to his first term. And the war just kept getting bigger and bigger. I believed from almost the moment I understood what Vietnam was about that I would be drafted, when I got out of high school. To me, it also meant that I would eventually be shot at and maybe killed.

That I would be drafted in the fall of 1969 seemed inevitable. It was a fact that all guys thought about a great deal in those days. We didn't talk about it much, though. It was just too scary to talk about.

I was one of those who didn't believe the war was right, but I also didn't believe in copping out by cutting and running. So there I was, stuck in a life I didn't much like, with a future of war and likely death facing me.

So, you can see why I made it home every Friday night to watch the original Star Trek. And I have a pretty good memory of writing a letter when they tried to cancel the show in 1968.

I can't imagine what I would have thought if some time traveler had walked up to me during those years and said, "In forty years, you will have managed to stay out of Vietnam. You will have written over twenty Star Trek novels, edited several Star Trek anthologies for new writers, and written a few Star Trek scripts." I'm sure I would have just laughed. Being a part, even a minor part, of such a unique show would never have crossed my mind in 1966.

About thirteen years ago, my wife and I got the chance to join in creating some of this wonderful universe, and we jumped at it. Writing under the name Sandy Schofield, we wrote Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Big Game. Suddenly, I was a Star Trek writer. And it's such a high for me that I get to give new writers out there the same chance.

In nine volumes, there have been almost two hundred new Star Trek stories. Over one hundred different writers have joined in inventing Star Trek, the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. I'm sure every one of them, since they are all fans, can talk about the influence Star Trek, in every incarnation, had in their lives, just as I can. The shows, now shown in syndication, continue to influence future generations as well.

With the world becoming a little rougher than it has been the last few decades, we now need the wonderful vision of the future that Star Trek brings us even more. We need the escape, the hope, and the belief that mankind goes forward.

At the moment, we only have the books and games that can bring Star Trek and its hope and vision to all of us. You hold it in your hand. You are the cutting edge of Star Trek -- written by the fans, people like you and me, who love this universe almost more than our real one.

For forty exceptional years, Star Trek has given us all a look ahead, a wonderful escape into a great universe. So sit back, turn off the news, and let a few of your fellow fans take you away on twenty-three wonderful trips into the future. You won't want to come home.

The Fans turn at knocking out of the ballpark

If you're looking for continuation that follows true to the original, but has a little different direction and perspective from our "regular writers", this is it. They've given the fans a chance to write their own short stories and they are REALLY good...and fit in with the Star Trek books we love. I can't imagine ever letting the stories fade, and these books give a fresh perspective, yet keep us with the characters we've watched and loved over the years. Like a fresh twist of lemon!

Fanfic goes Pro-Fic! Woo-hoo!

Wow - it's a book! Seriously, this is a collection of ST fanfics, which is, in and of itself, pretty cool. The writing is varied, but none is bad or poorly done. That said, there are limitations provided by the publisher that prevents any really in-depth character or plot development, but providing you like the characters in each story, you'll enjoy it. Nothing for the avid 'shipper', and nothing out of canon. But yes, if you like ST and fanfic, you'll enjoy this.
