Couldn't put it down

The first in the trio of Far Harbor titles, I liked this one even more the second in the series, perhaps because I remembered the key characters and liked them. This title focuses on high-powered NYC attorney, Raine, and widowed Sheriff Jack O'Halloran. Much can be made of their respective back stories, but most telling is Raine's relationship with her mother, who really wasn't much of one, but whose love is clear. Also compelling is Jack's late wife's tapes, designed to help their daughter know her long after her mother's death when the child was only two years old.

Both laughter and tears characterize a reading of Homeplace. It was one of those reads I couldn't put down, no matter that I tried. This is one series I fully intend to enjoy again.

Rescuing Pee Wee lands Kip with a traveling companion who is very smart but much in need of protection. Fortunately, or so the kids believe at first, another alien being, whom they call the "Mother Thing," is available as both advisor and space guide. Their travels take them to Pluto, where they escape the clutches of Bronx-gangster humans, and then out to galaxies beyond our own. Eventually, Kip and Pee Wee stand trial in the stead of all humanity, a race charged with its rampant disregard for peace and environmental justice. Bruce Coville's young audiobook company treats this tale handily, with each character well acted by an age-appropriate reader. Pee Wee's childish voice sometimes requires adjustment to the volume level, but she and Kip carry the major portion of the tale between them, with interesting and appropriate musical effects added during chapter breaks and to the voice of the Mother Thing. One of the best

This is my all time favorite by Heinlein and one of my favorite books out of all I have ever read. The story is crisp and fast paced, with no wasted space at all. The characters are believable and appealing, and the action carries the story along with surety and verve. I have read the book many times since I first discovered it and I expect to be rereading it many more times in the future.

Might be the best boys SciFi book ever

When I was 10 years old and sick in bed, my mom asked the public librarian for a good book for me. She brought home HSSWT. It was my introduction to really good science fiction. Over the last 50 years, I have read it 11 times. Still one of my very favorites.

great book

This was the first science fiction book I ever read, I found it in the public library when I was 12 years old, was intrigued by the title and took it home to read. I enjoyed it immensely and went on to devour Heinlein's other kid's classic, "Podkayne of Mars" which I thought was equally wonderful.
Thirty-five years later, Kip, Peewee and the Mother Thing have lost none of their charm. What I found most interesting about this book, however, was how very much things have changed since this it was first published: the story begins with Kip's attempting to win first prize in a soap slogan contest (he sends in 5,000+ entries) the grand prize for which is a trip to the moon. He doesn't win the trip but he does win Oscar-the-Traveling-Spacesuit, which turns out to be the best prize after all. Back to the contest: Kip can send in the actual contest form included with each bar of soap or he can send in a "reasonable facsimile." He entertains the idea of photographing the form 5,000 times before deciding that's impractical, so he settles instead for collecting the forms from the people who have bought the soap. I kept thinking, so why doesn't he just use the photocopier when it occured to me there weren't any photocopiers when this book was written. There weren't any intergrated circuits either, never mind microprocessors, which would have been necessary to achieve colonization of the moon in the first place. I also found it interesting that although when Kip graduates from high school he is reasonably well-educated in sciences and math (thanks to self-teaching -- and a diatribe from Heinlein on what he considers to be the sorry state of 1950's high school education) because he doesn't get a scholarship, he is faced with having to work while attending the local (read mediocre) state college. This book predates the arrival of college loans and grants as well.
I did like the fact that the other main character in this book is a girl -- it was good of Heinlein to provide his readers such an intelligent and resourceful role model.

Useless monstrosity.

The only useful part is the cd with its downloadable pdf with techniques for facilitating correct articulation.
Otherwise, the book itself is a useless monstrosity. 98% is rambling theory/research. Not practical at all.
So unless you're planning to write a dissertation on phonology, look elsewhere for a decent book.

The book is great! But I received the NEW copy I ordered with missing pages. I am missing most of chapter 3 and half of chapter 4! I am using this book for graduate school and I am so frustrated! I cannot believe I am facing this issue with a NEW book!

A little disappointing.

As fun as the overall idea of this book is, I find Mr. Schechter's prose a little tired. There's nothing new in this compendium that can't be found elsewhere, and it's full of pretty mundane details, things that people (especially those seeking an encyclopedia of serial killers) pretty much already know. A nice touch is the inclusion of illustrations and pictures of the serial killer trading cards. As much as I tried to give this book a chance, I actually threw it away, or maybe I gave it away.

Schechter mentions Ted Bundy being put to death in February of 1989, when, well, that's incorrect. Surely an author can do a quick fact check before publication. Bundy died on January 24, 1989. It's hard to take seriously an author who can't get little dates correct.

If you're a serial killer aficionado, give this one a pass. There are much better books out there that go into more detail, instead of grazing over lots of information with an almost sarcastic tone. I was really disappointed.

But if you're a 17-year old kid into "dark" things, or someone "trying" to be cool, you may like this one. For those seriously into true crime or the pathology of serial killers, skip this one. Don't waste your money.

I absolutely have adored this calendar for years now! I always get this as a Christmas present. The colors are crisp and the pages are thick enough so I can even write with a sharpie and it doesn't go through!!! Would highly recommend.

The calendars are beautiful, my daughter and me love dogs

I wrote yesterday giving the " thank you " for all, but you said that is not possible. I will try to write in english, because is a little difficult for me, i speak spanish in Argentina. The calendars are beautiful, my daughter and me love dogs, so was a surprise for her. I put mine in the kitchen, and se will put it in her office, she works so hard and lives more at job., less at home. Is the life in these times. Again, thank you for all. I hope you can understand my very bad english. Regards !! Good year !!

Great read, but morbid in a way...

I'm a huge fan of wrestlers autobiographies. Eddie Guerrero's story was very captivating and riveting. Definitely an interesting read. He talks about his battle with all his demons with substance abuse and alcohol, and has a very encouraging message of faith, and overcoming his demons. It was only a short while after reading this book that Eddie passed, and reading about his struggles in life seemed so morbid, almost to the point of feeling guilty for having that much access into his life, and then for him to pass on once he had overcome so much. It was definitely an eye opening experience when he passed, having read this book first, knowing what he went through, knowing what he overcame, and then seeing him go. Absolutely great read though, you won't be disappointed.

Anyone who enjoys playing with the English language will find this compendium charming and at times hysterical. Elster has put together an odd sort of thesaurus, though what he gives here are not synonyms but words for things, states of being, and conditions for which a common word does not exist. For instance, did you know that the word for a person who never laughs is ajelast? Or that humdudgeon is an imaginary pain or illness? The book is separated into amusingly titled chapters, such as "Erotographomania: The Hottest Hifalutin Words about Love and Sex." Unlike most such handbooks, this one would read well cover to cover. A perfect book for dringles with lexiphanicistism (translation: a perfect book for those who like to waste time and who tend to show off with words). Mary Frances Wilkens

Find just the right word

The book arrived on time and was in very good condition, better than described. I love books about words, they help fill the little holes in our speech with just the right word. This book is broken down by category so it is easy to find just the right word.

Attention, logomaniacs!

It must be said that if you are looking for a serious reference book to boost a lacking vocabulary, look elsewhere. Using Mr Elster's words may earn you some extremely strange looks. But for those among us who are non-scopophobic and thrive on strange looks, as well as those of us who love the English language, this book should provide endless cachinnation. The blend of true words and nonce-words created from various prefixes and suffixes may at times aggravate those who want to be sure, but how could a real logomaniac be angry with that? Those nonce-words, when they become real, are reminders of exactly how great are the possibilities of this language.

Just Plain Fun

A person often takes a chance when ordering a book based primarily on a title. Even based on friends' recommendations, ordering a book you know little about is an iffy proposition. This book is like that. It sounds like a book for building your speaking and writing vocabulary. It is not. Neither is it exhaustive. It is just plain fun. If you enjoy unusual words and like to play with language, this will give you plenty of material.

Margaret MacDonald was a young girl when a seer told her of her future. The old woman said that she will have to choose the right man or she will perish. Although confused and slightly afraid, Margaret listened and remembered those words as she grew older.

Margaret had been betrothed to Lachlan Ross since she was a babe. She is very pleased with the match and Lachlan seems to be pleased with her as well. On the verge of marrying Lachlan, Margaret is betrayed by him and she now refuses to go through with the marriage. Her father gives her a choice; either marry Lachlan or be sent to a convent. Attempting to break her betrothal through the King, Margaret journeys to England with her sister Nell and her brother Rignor. Her pleas are ignored though. Margaret meets the seer again there and both she and Nell are told of their futures. Margaret feels helpless and lost. She doesn't know which path to take and the seer's visions just confuse her even more.

Returning form their journey Margaret and her siblings find their home in Somerstrath destroyed, the people either slain or missing. Their young brother Davey is among the missing. As they struggle to comprehend their loss, warriors arrive to help them. Gannon Magnusson is one of these warriors. Gannon and Margaret find themselves drawn to each other, which makes Margaret wonder if Gannon is the man the seer prophesied about.

They travel to a neighboring land after burying the dead and Gannon and Margaret get the chance to know each other while the men try to determine the name of the man responsible for the attacks at Somerstrath, and to other lands, including Gannon's home in Ireland. A Norseman is brutally destroying homes and killing innocents in his quest for power.

While the Norseman continues his savagery, the battle that Gannon and Margaret must wage to be free to love one another becomes increasingly more difficult. Lachlan will not give up his betrothed without a fight and Margaret refuses to be used as a pawn for uniting the clans through this farce of a marriage to him. Unfortunately, their search for Davey has been fruitless so far as well.

When the war is once again at their door, Gannon, Margaret and those left from their clans descend on the Vikings and fight for all they are worth. Will it be enough to stop this madman from destroying what's left of their people and their lands?

On A Highland Shore is breathtaking. Margaret is magnificent. She followed her heart and never faltered even under pressure. I admire her determination and strength. Gannon is a true hero. He is noble and strong. They make a glorious couple. The villain is perfect. He is ruthless and cold. His evil deeds captivated me. On A Highland Shore is both romantic and tragic. Nell`s and Davey's stories could turn this wonderful story into an epic series. I was enthralled with On A Highland Shore and I highly recommend it.

Great Historical

I really enjoyed this book,and await patiently for the sequels concerning the two siblings. I thought the story was interesting without going into alot of sexual heavy breathing . It mentioned a few times that she was beautiful and that he was handsome. but it wasn't repeated on every other page as some books I have read lately. The story moved along at a good pace and found it hard to put down,wanting to see what happened next. If you like historicals I would reccommend this one. If you want alot of sex this is not the book for you. Connie Mason writes a good story with a great deal of sex involved, But if you want a good read you will like this book.

Couldn't Put it Down!

After finishing a rather lackluster book on the Highlands by another author, I picked up "On a Highland Shore" and was mesmerized from page one and couldn't put it down! Plenty of reviewers here have told the tale so there's no need for me to repeat what's already been written, except those five star reviews are accurate for a change. I've just ordered all of Givens books, and look forward to reading more from this author who doesn't underestimate the intelligence of her reader.
