Fantastic and much needed tips for a successful wedding reception

My fiance and I are experiencing a bit of a role reversal, in that I am in the minority of grooms, one who is the primary planner/coordinator of our upcoming wedding. My fiance has great taste and is involved with all major decisions, but is also an extremely busy professional, so I was happy to step up as the experienced party planner, doing the homework and pre-negotiating with vendors, before my fiance and I together make final selections of vendors and the plan. However, I had never planned a wedding before, so I've bought many books and read lots of websites and paged through many magazines (I don't think I can look at another magazine ad of a bride-model laying horizontal on a couch without snickering). Virtually everything is written for the bride who typically plans the wedding - which to me means there is a heavy emphasis on decorations and flowers and invitations and linens and color schemes... it was all driving me crazy as a guy trying to put together a wedding plan that is simply fun and action oriented, while still allows for nice things. I've attended many dozens of weddings over the years and I've kept an eye on what makes weddings enjoyable and memorable: keep it festive, keep guests involved, and make sure there is time for the happy couple to spend time with each of the guests. I never saw any correlation with the size of the party, the location, the decorations, even the food quality (and I'm a big foodie), with how successful and fun the wedding was. Given this perspective, I looked and looked for wedding planning advice in all the books and magazines and websites, hoping to find action oriented advice for having a festive wedding reception - frankly, I found little useful advice. Finally, just three months before our upcoming wedding, I have found the book I really needed - on the recommendation of a wedding DJ friend (who lives and works in another state), I ordered Peter Merry's book, which I have found to be chock full of actionable ideas from an experienced wedding DJ/entertainment director. He focuses on the concept of entertainment and leaves decorations and other more frivolous things to the other books. He is a welcome voice, a rare male perspective in wedding planning books, that a planning groom, and presumably planning brides as well, needs. I've already made adjustments to the reception agenda and found validation with some activity ideas we already had in place. Rest assured, there will be great food and many touches of elegance in the design of our wedding, but I am now more confident as ever we will have a truly festive wedding with Peter Merry's advice influencing our plan. Many thanks to the author - the advice is easily 10 times worth the cover price of the book. I strongly recommend this book to anyone planning their wedding.

The Best Wedding Reception Planner Ever!

As not only an event coordinator, but a bride-to-be I found this book extremely helpful. After having experience as a wedding planner I didn't think that I needed any reading materials to help plan my reception. I'm so grateful to have received this book as a gift! There are so many awesome ideas and tips that I'm excited to use or create my own spin off.

Another nice thing about this is that it's broken down so it's really easy to find what you want. So even if you don't think you want to read all of it, it's not an issue to go through and find the things that you need the most guidance on.

Be sure to check this book out. It will be one of the best wedding planning tools that you can get!

When it comes to helping make great weddings a reality, Peter Merry is one of the best there is and this book clearely illustrates why.

My wife and I do scores of weddings each year. She is the event manager for a popular wedding venue and I a wedding entertainment expert, host or DJ, if you prefer. For us, this book is it!

It will not help you pick a dress style, flowers, or centerpieces but it will give you the tools to help you do that and so much more.
It will help you select your vendors and your venue and then show you how to plan with those vendors to create the best wedding day you could have ever imagined.

Peters book covers just about every facet of the day but moreover it provides you with so many unique ideas. Ideas you can elaborate upon with your vendors to create a wedding that is unique, personal and fun.

In the 10 days since the end of Mercy Falls (2005), Cork has picked up a gunshot wound to the leg. His widowed veterinarian cousin, Jewell DuBois, is able to install a Penrose drain, leaving Cork largely immobilized. Cork's friend, security specialist Dina Willner, appears to watch his back, yet most of the plot shifts away from potential shootouts with hit men to Jewell's 13-year-old son, Ren; Ren's tomboy pal, Charlie; and the corpse of a teenage girl found floating in the Copper River. As usual, Krueger conveys a solid sense of place, the woodlands near the shore of Lake Superior, northwest out of Marquette, "where scenes from Anatomy of a Murder had been filmed." But the segue to the familiar children-in-peril theme feels like a cop-out, especially since the previous, superior novel had primed readers for something more intense and harrowing. (Aug.)

I have been following William Kent Krueger's Cork O'Connor series from the volume one. Cork is a great character excellently presented and developed by a wonderful writer. Krueger's ability to describe the challenging climates of Minnesota and other locations his characters travel to puts you there and has you going to your closet to find the proper attire. Great author, Great Series.

William Kent Krueger has impressed me yet again. This book sees Cork away from his family and the main characters from earlier books, but delivers a great set of players and a page turner that should come with an addiction warning. Fantastic and my favorite so far.

Chapter One: Spring Break of Senior Year

Max Biaggi Jr. paced the waiting area of New York University Medical Center, his booze buzz long gone. Nothing like the adrenaline of white-hot fear to kick in instant sobriety.

He was the son of Hollywood's hottest action star, Miami's most celebrated party promoter, and, at seventeen, already had a list of sexual conquests approaching that triple-digit figure with a one and two zeros. But right now he was just an older brother, praying for God to spare the life of his baby sister.

A soft touch grazed his arm. "I'm going to get a cup of coffee. Can I get you some?"

Max looked at Bethany with a savage intensity. She was a girl he'd met at the Tar Beach rooftop party practically five minutes ago. They were supposed to be in his hotel suite having sex, not in a hospital lobby sweating out life-or-death news.

"I don't need coffee, bitch. I just need to know that my sister's going to make it." And then Max sank down into a chair and began nervously chewing on the nail of his index finger.

For a long moment, Bethany just stood there, speechless, her face a masterpiece of hurt and embarrassment.

Max ignored her.

Finally, she walked away.

He would never see her again. Like he gave a shit. Bethany was just some party skank he wanted to nail. And suddenly she wanted an upgrade to instant girlfriend who provides emotional support in a moment of crisis? Thanks, but no thanks, baby.

Once more, Max put his Sidekick II to work calling his friends -- Vanity, Dante, Pippa, and Christina. And once again, not one of them answered.

Max was alone. He was scared as hell, too. "Come on, Sho," he murmured. "Don't go out like this. That would make me an orphan."

A young Asian woman in surgical scrubs approached, her expression severe and disapproving. "You brought in Shoshanna Biaggi?"

Max stood quickly, nodding as he took in the badge that announced her as Dr. Elizabeth Tang. "I'm her brother. Is she -- "

"Are you the one who gave her the drugs?"

"N-no...of course not," Max stammered.

"So -- what?" Dr. Tang countered in a caustic tone. "You just stood there and watched her take them?"

Max knew that his expression was almost pleading. "No, like I told the paramedics...she was hanging with this guy who makes his own chem shit. He swears he didn't give her anything, but I know he's lying -- "

Dr. Tang raised an impatient hand to silence him. "She was given -- or rather she took -- something. At this point, my best guess is a dangerously high dose of PCP, but it'll take a few days for the toxicology report to come back. And it might not reveal much."

"How is she?" Max asked.

Dr. Tang betrayed no emotion. "Your sister's in a coma." One beat. "I suggest you call your parents. They need to get here as soon as possible."

Max's mind got stuck on the last bit. "Are you saying she's going to die?" The question croaked out faintly, no more than a whisper.

"The next few hours are critical," Dr. Tang said gravely. "And it could go either way. So like I said -- call your parents."

Max watched her disappear, struggling to maintain his composure as he glanced around. He hated the democracy of hospital emergency rooms -- rich, poor, gorgeous, ugly, brilliant, uneducated. The same care and effort went into saving all of them. For once, all of his Hollywood name dropping and trust-fund power didn't mean a goddamn thing.

The guilt began to gnaw away at him like a flesh-eating virus. If only he had told Shoshanna no. If only he had listened to that instinct deep inside telling him that making a mark on the Manhattan party scene and watching over his sister was an impossible spring break agenda. But Max had convinced himself that he could do it, rationalizing that his sister was more likely to find trouble alone in Miami than with her brother in New York. He felt a stab of self-loathing: Great call, Superboy.

Shoshanna was a true wild child -- fifteen going on twenty-one. She showcased her breast implants to eye-popping effect, always assumed a provocative, vampish fashion style, and frequently put herself in the path of older guys who wanted only one thing from her. The girl was an impossible princess. But Max loved that openly defiant, potty-mouthed bitch-brat like no one else in the world.

Call your parents.

Max stared down at his Sidekick, dreading the task. He dialed his father first. It started to ring. "Pick up the phone, you son of a bitch..."

Pippa Keith was lost in a foggy tableau, vaguely aware of the horror, yet still feeling like it was happening to someone else. A total free fall from fairy tale to nightmare. How could it be? In answer to the confusion, her body was in a strange state of paralysis.

The replay of the cruel words blistered and burned as Pippa lay there, emotionally wrecked, prepared to submit to any humiliation, if only to bring this nightmare to a faster end.

What a bloody fool she was...to believe even for a moment that she was anything more to this bastard than a commodity of flesh -- a private dance to buy, a private date to broker. And to think that only minutes ago Pippa had been building castles in the air, imagining a future, a marriage, a life together...with him.

Pippa could feel Max Biaggi's hands pushing up the Gucci wrap dress. It was past her waist now. She shut her eyes, recoiling from his touch as hot tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Just think, Star Baby, after this you'll be an official member of the Mile High Club." His voice was thick with lust, his breathing uneven.

Pippa grimaced as she heard the distinct sound of a zipper going down...and after that, the crinkling of a Mylar-wrapped condom being ripped open. "Please...don't..."

"I thought a whore like you would be begging for it." He hissed into her ear, then darted his tongue in and out before giving her lobe a playful bite, his teeth crunching slightly on her H. Stern chandelier earrings.

Pippa struggled to shift her body from underneath him, but Max Biaggi's hold was too firm. Even her strongest effort proved futile.

"Why'd you get so dressed up, Star Baby? Did you think I was going to take you out and show you off?" He started to laugh as his hand began peeling down her underwear. "I've got an image to protect. Cheetah girls are just a dirty little secret." He slapped the right cheek of her butt with the palm of his hand.

Pippa experienced the loud pop and the sharp sting simultaneously, and the humiliation triggered a quiet, simmering rage. Once more, she fought to get free.

But Max Biaggi tightened his grip. "What do I have here -- another Hellcat? Do you want to wrestle? Is that what you want? Or do you just like it a little rough?" He gave her hair a vicious tug.

Pippa winced in pain. This date was supposed to be her night of romance. This man was supposed to be her dream guy. It seemed impossible that everything had gone so wrong. Yet here she was, living out loud the horrifying reality.

Max Biaggi had straddled her and locked Pippa's body between his knees in a vise-tight hold. But the strongest part of her remained free...her legs. Yes. Her long, lean dancer's legs. Miss Bill, MACPA's musical theater director, had been relentless, grinding her through Broadway boot camp to get her ready for the challenging choreography of Sweet Charity. That, coupled with her pole routines at Cheetah, had built up impressive leg strength and also made her incredibly limber.

Pippa bucked in protest as Max Biaggi roughly finger probed the forbidden part of her.

All of a sudden, the voice of Hellcat roamed around Pippa's mind like a wolf in the woods.

BEAUTIFUL DISASTER is the third and final book in the FAST GIRLS, HOT BOYS series. It picks up where the second book in the series, BLING ADDICTION, left off. It follows the lives of the "fabulous" five students at Miami Academy for Creative and Performing Arts in the last few months of their high school career. The fabulous five being Vanity St. John, Max Biaggi, Jr., Pippa Keith, Dante Medina, and Christina Perez. But only four out of the five of them will make it to graduation day alive. The question is who?

Max has a hard time when his sister, Sho, ends up in a coma after taking some drugs that somebody made at one of Max's infamous parties. Pippa blackmails Max's father for almost raping her on his private jet and decides to take off to New York without finishing high school. Christina jumps off of a roof, hoping to kill herself to escape the fact that her mother is sending her to some camp that is supposed to specialize in "degayification" only to get caught up in some Christmas lights and saved by a random guy who happened to be nearby. Dante ends up leading the police to a room where Vanity is tied up and about to be killed by some druggie who made a sex tape of her a while back. And after Dante saves Vanity they start a relationship together.

Right before their graduation day one of them is killed. And their lives are all changed forever.

I haven't read the first two books in this series but this one was great. I finished it in a day -- it was that good. It was also a short book as well, so that helped, too. But it was amazing. It moved at such a fast pace and was a real page-turner. I loved the five main characters, especially Max. They were all great and each of the story lines involving them were strong. This book is definitely intended for older readers ages 16 and up. It's a great summer read, so if you're without something to read during summer I would highly suggest this series. The first two books are probably just as great as this one is!

In my haste from enjoying the first book so much i kinda speed read through this. But when i had free time and i reviewed it it was as good as the first time. I enjoy the characters and the atmosphere. Great book, before this series reading had become a bore to me but this is so refreshing it got me hooked again

This came very neatly packaged in a huge box so the corners didn't get messed up or bent. the pictures are so colorful and I know my bro is going to love it. Big and pretty!

UPDate: Also, It came with a sheet of stickers, so that the boys can place the dates they have raids, etc. My brother got very excited about the stickers and was sending pictures to all his friends online. He also rearranged the things on his wall so he could see his calendar from his computer and know what days his team is doing what. Pretty cute making someone so excited about a calendar. I didn't know it came with stickers.

Making The Argument for Fiction As Canon

I had heard that the new "Star Trek" movie (XI) would be using sources outside of the TV shows as Canon. (JJ Abrams made this decision - it is still contrary to the thoughts of Gene Roddenberry, but I've never understood why Roddenberry wouldn't accept some of the better written books as Canon.)

This is one of the books that is used as Canon for the new movie. It tells a story that takes place after the episode "The Xindi". It explores the relationship between the Starfleet Crew and the MACOs, and there is a framing story which contains some very interesting revelations. With a cast of characters you'd be familiar with having seen the show "Enterprise", there is information about one of the main characters of that show, as well as one of the main characters of TOS that serves to remind us that good fiction should be Canon.

You'll want to follow this book with "The Good That Men Do (Star Trek: Enterprise)" as it is also considered as Canon and makes an excellent companion story to this - revealing more and concluding some "Enterprise" plot lines nicely.

When a contingent of MACO's is assigned to the Enterprise to support Captain Jonathan Archer's Starfleet crew both groups share a common goal: stopping the Xindi, but they differ in their ideas of how to accomplish that goal.

In the new Enterprise novel Last Full Measure the writing duo of Michael A. Martin and Andy Mangels have crafted a first-rate story that goes a long way toward reconciling how the two groups learned to work together and trust each other while at the same time fleshing out the characters and bridging some of the gap between Enterprise and the Original series. Then there is the little matter of a very shocking revelation within the framing story.

The bulk of the action in Last Full Measure takes place right after the third season episode "The Xindi" so it's not surprising that the Military Assault Command Operations personnel have a fairly low opinion of Archer and his Starfleet crew. When Archer decides to lead a landing party to Kaletoo to follow another tenuous lead on the Xindi, Major Hayes has justifiable doubts about Archer's leadership skills but dutifully assembles a small squad to accompany the away team.

Meanwhile T'Pol, who has been left in command on Enterprise, sends Mayweather and another squad of MACO's lead by Mayweather's nemesis Corporal Chang to investigate what appears to be the trail of a Xindi vessel. The trail leads the shuttlepod to a Xindi fuel facility and a showdown between Mayweather and Chang over the decision about what to do about their discovery.

As the main narrative unfolds in Last Full Measure the tension between the MACO's and Archer's Starfleet crew is palpable. Mangels and Martin employ several tried and true storytelling techniques to simply and effectively take most of the Enterprise characters out of the equation early so that the reader's attention is focused on the small core group they tell their story through.

This approach works wonderfully and although you barely know some of the major players as the story begins by the final chapter they feel like old friends. In addition to getting to know several of the MACO's a bit better we also get a chance to meet Lieutenant "D.O." O'Neill, one of Enterprises watch commanders.

Some people might be disturbed by the characterization of Archer in this story, primarily the methods he employs to ensure the "cooperation" of Trahve in tracking down the Xindi but given the weight of responsibility he carries you can understand those methods even if you can't agree with them.

The surprise in the framing story raises lots of questions but once the initial shock passes you can sense that a door has just been opened that allows for some potentially exciting novels in the future.

Good classroom edition

I like teaching this novel, but I don't have time to teach the full text. This abridgement does a good job of capturing the fullness of the story and the characters in about 40% of the pages. I like the historical timelines at the beginning and the Notes sections at the end. My students find the novel easy to manage, too.

ABRIDGED - falsely labeled

I am very disappointed that the copy is advertised as "complete and unabridged" - right on the cover! This is definitely NOT complete or unabridged. Les Miserables is a fantastic book, but I would not recommend this publication by "Enriched Classics". Nor will I buy any from this publishing company again. I believe they should label their books honestly and correctly. If you want to read an unabridged version, do not buy this book.

Trashy, Inept, and Deceptive Treatment of a Classic

Nowhere in this edition does it say whether the book is abridged or unabridged. Nowhere does it say who the translator is. Wouldn't these be basic facts a customer is entitled to know?

Rather ironic omissions for an "enriched" edition allegedly full of supplementary helpful information.

Even worse, I strongly suspect (from another version of this 'enriched' edition on Amazon) that the translator is Charles Wilbour, a man who seems to always pop up as the translator of many French novels, but a man who should never be allowed near the French language:

As someone who knows French, I counted on just the first half page -eight- different unclear - or just plain wrong - translations. Some of them render a French word into a little known,stilted, or archaic English word.

That's when I said "Ah! This has to be Wilbour" . . . And I tossed the book with great force at the radiator.
