The word in the family practice unit at Group Health Cooperative (Seattle), after inspecting the book, was that it would be well used by their physicians (and undoubtedly the rest of GHC) because it gave a much-needed comprehensive view of all known zoonoses and toxicants and detailed information about each sector. The book's 23 contributors and 88 reviewers assured professional back-up for the interpretations of the links between the medical and veterinary fields that the book provides.

About the Author
Mark Evan Chimsky is Editor-in-chief for the book division of Sellers Publishing. For eight years, he ran his own editorial consulting business. Preparing to retire

I have watched several friends retire and be miserable. They were going to travel, play golf and sleep late--that sort of thing. One was back to work in 3 months (same job, less salary), the other is still unhappy he retired and trying to find meaning in this new stage of life. I'm not quite ready to retire but planning is important. This book gave me a lot to think about--what to do in retirement, how to find meaning, how to blend some type of working to supplement income with lots of fun!! The many different authors with different points of view was refreshing. I am buying copies for my over 55 friends. I loved this book. It even helped me decide where to live in retirement!

If you're looking for 65 ideas of things to do in retirement, this book isn't it. It's a collection of very short essays, none of which have much substance. Further, there's no coordination between the content, so a lot of the material is repetitive. There were a few slightly useful insights, but I could have done better with a google search. Save your money.

This book did nothing for me. The vast majority of the chapters were written by other people who have written books on how to have a good retirement. I thought it would be interesting to read about other people's journeys, but the chapters are so short and superficial they don't say much. And since in most cases the authors found their retirement bliss by writing retirement books or coaching other retirees, the whole thing feels like a big sales job for their books.

Maybe if you haven't really thought about retirement at all or read any other books on it, then it will mean something to you. But I suspect reading individual books will be more satisfying than this summary book. For example, one of the better chapters is Ernie Zelinski's, which summarizes his books The Joy of Not Working and Retire Happy, Wild and Free. I have read these books and they are excellent, so I'd skip this one and start there.

Edgy with some darkness but great hero and lots of action

I think with John Ringo, you either love him or hate him in some ways, he mentioned some time ago he stopped reading Amazon reviews and just does his stuff and I can see why based on the real variety of reviews.

Quite frankly, I love this series, at least the first 4 books and this one starts things off very quickly with lots of action all the way thru the book, the 2 additional stories at the end do have a lot of focus on sex (BDSM play) and violence if you are not open minded about that then you might not like it or the series so I am telling you up front but you could try this book as the first main story is mostly action packed

For me, great book, great character with funny quips and comments and few interesting buddies some of whom will appear in later books to be fully fledged charcaters

Fast paced and generally well-written

I would have given this 4 stars were it not for the prevailing atmosphere of the protagonist's S&M leanings which personally I find off-putting. This is a recurring theme ongoing in the series. If I manage to set that aside, Ringo writes military adventure well and for that reason I have read this series twice. For better stories without the S&M read his Empire of Man series, e.g."A March Upcountry".

I'M GETTING HUNGRY JUST READING IT!

Oddly, while deli food is considered one of the great American traditions, it's roots are steeped in our invaluable immigrant ancestors. Honestly what's better than a great corn beef sandwich or a steaming bowl of matzo bowl soup? America's Great Delis takes a fond look at these hallowed halls of dining pleasure in a book that is part tribute, part history, and part cookbook and all a pleasure to read.

Author Sheryll Bellman begins the book by taking a look at the history of deli food including a timeline of events that includes the first known preserving of cucumbers in 2000 BCE, to the origination of the Frankfurter in Germany in the 1400's...from the opening of the Manischewitz bakery in 1888 to the opening of the famous Carnegie Deli in 1937. Next is a brief history of various deli foods such as bagels, Challah bread, corned beef, Matzo ball soup, blintzes, and of course the Reuben Sandwhich.

Ahh...but all that is just the garnish on this heaping plate of gastronomic delights. The meat of the book is a whirlwind tour of some of the oldest, and most famous delis in the country. This includes a bit of history of each as well as some of their most famous, signature recipes. While it's heavily New York influenced, there are recipes included from delis around the country. There's the chicken soup and matzo balls from the 2nd Avenue Deli, cheesecake from Carnegie Deli, Borscht from Katz's deli and Cheese Blintzes from the Stage Deli. Moving outside New York City you'll find a recipe for the German potato salad from Shapiro's in Indianapolis, the pastrami sandwich from Zingerman's in Ann Arbor, beef brisket from Canter's in Los Angeles, and the egg custard from Rose's in Portand, Oregon.

Now you'll know why so many of these establishments were frequented by Hollywood's elite over the years. With some 75 recipes and nostalgic photographs this book is a must-have for lovers of deli or great American foods.

History, travelogue, and cookbook all rolled into one

This book is a combination history, travelogue, and cookbook all rolled into one.

From a history standpoint Ms. Bellman goes back to describe how many of the classic deli foods were invented. In 1610, for instance, bagels were created in Krakow, Poland and given as gifts to women after childbirth.

As a travelogue, whe has visited and describes a few dozen deli's from around the country. As you would expect, New York gets the most coverage. After all NYC has the most deli's. But also included are delis up and down the east coast, through the mid-west and on to Los Angeles.

As a cookbook, many of these deli's have givern her recipies of their most famous foods. Carnegie deli (near Carnegie Hall) is well known for its cheesecake and its Matzo Ball soup. Recipies for both of these are given here.

Ms Bellman rightfully laments the closing of many deli's, not only in New York but around the country. I suppose the traditional deli just can't compete with the fast food places.

All in all, this is kind of a nostalgia book, but one taht makes your mouth water.

If Max could cut it, so could I...

_This is one of the few books that I read as a boy that stuck with me all the rest of my life. While I never studied to be an "astrogator", this book did inspire me to study astronomy, navigation, physics, and calculus. It gave me a dream to build on. You see, the hero, Max, is a poor, rural kid from a highly dysfunctional and abusive family (actually, "white trash" is more accurate.) Being lower class, Max has no realistic chance of going to college or entering a profession ( a "guild".) Yet he not only escapes, he goes on to captain a starship. He succeeds entirely on his own against incredible odds. Instead of accepting a life of rural idiocy and poverty he literally remakes himself and his destiny from the ground up.

_Whenever I was up against it in my own life I inevitably remembered Max. How many modern books provide an example like this for "lower class" kids? My only regret is that there wasn't an Astrogator's Guild that I could have joined. If Max could cut it, so could I...

An Important Book

I have been a fan of Robert A. Heinlein since I was 8 years old. This book is from what many consider his most creative period. The so-called juveniles he wrote for Charles Scribners Sons had an immediate and lasting impact. None of them has ever been out of print. This is despite their awful titles and their original target audience.

Maximilian Jones is from a poor family. The star of the family was his late Uncle Chester who was a member of the Astrogator's Guild. Max runs away from home with his Uncle's astrogation manuals with a vague notion of following in his Uncle's footsteps. Along the way he meets with and is robbed by another tramp, Sam.

In a interesting twist of events, this thief becomes the best friend a man ever had. Between the Max's brilliance and Sam's avarice and cunning,their mutual loyalty, and series of fortunate and unfortunate events, Max achieves his goal.

Obviously a novel written during the fifties has dated technology. The ships computer is two steps above Eniac. There are effectively no female crewmen. But none this detracts from a fine story. Along the way lessons are given, regarding leadership, friendship, responsibility and of all things rule of law.

Having read this as a child, I did not understand everything at the time that I read it. But as I grew older the lessons learned helped me in life.

The book is still an excellent read even if you're an adult. Personally I have gone so far as to track down an old library hardcover with the original illustrations.

It is unfortunate that Heinlein has received a lot of press for some of the worst things he wrote for an adult audience, such as _Stranger_in_a_Strange_Land_. His genius was in his "juvenile novels" -- the stories he wrote for serialization in boy scout magazines, later published as books.

Max Jones dropped out of high school to support his lazy irresponsible stepmother by working on their farm, which has only those amenities that would have been commonplace in 1850. But he dreams of becoming an astrogator aboard a starship like his late Uncle Chet, who instructed him in that profession. When his stepmother marries a man who is uneducated and cannot appreciate his ambition, Max leaves. The world being badly mismanaged, he must hitchhike to the city of Earthport to find out whether he has been appointed his uncle's professional heir.

I will not give away spoilers, but herewith I will tease you a little bit. Heinlein was a graduate of the Naval Academy, where he learned some of the laws in force aboard ships. While Max is serving aboard a ship that has become lost and set down on an unknown planet, with no realistic hope of finding its way home, the First Officer explains to the passengers and crew certain legal rights and obligations that apply in such an emergency. A passenger objects: "There are no laws HERE." The First Officer corrects him, saying the law goes where the ship goes. That sets the context for a climax several chapters later, involving legal, moral, political, and psychological aspects of leadership in an emergency.

The book dramatizes the role of intelligent purposefulness in human life. A scene occupying about the first four pages of the second chapter is a beautiful example: Max is alone facing difficulties and using his head.

The book has various readily identifiable flaws, which it would be easy for me to list. Those don't matter at all.

His weight was crushing my body. Deep inside me a guttural scream was building, desperate for release, but each time he thrust, the breath was forced out of me. His fingers gripped my wrists so tightly that I feared the skin would break. His eyes burned into mine as his breathing quickened to short, hard bursts. I struggled to break away, to move, to shift his weight off mine and get control again. But as his movements quickened, his weight and his strength held me down. "Yes?" he answered lazily, pulling his gaze with pleasing reluctance away from scanning the length of my legs.

"Do you want a big wedding?"

The edges of his mouth twitched just enough for me to see the joke coming. "Well, you know," he began, and I started to laugh, "that all little boys dream of a big wedding and wearing a fancy white dress. Queen for a day, that's me," he finished in a fake lisp; it didn't come off on my ultimate man's man.

I smacked him on his firm butt and he grabbed my arms, pinning me down again. "I'm serious, honey," I pleaded. "I've got to get started planning this." I was exaggerating a little. I had already hired the most expensive event team in town, given them a budget that would have bought a three-bedroom house in Beverly Hills, and all I would have to do was tell them what kind of cake I wanted. They'd pretty much take it from there.

"Yes," Evan said after considering seriously for a moment. "I want a big wedding," he said, then started kissing my neck, mumbling the next words as he moved down. "I want a gigantic wedding. I want everyone to know that little ol' Detective Evan Paley is marrying the most beautiful woman in the world, Callaway Francine Wilde." He came up for air, then said, "And I don't care if they can see the ring through my nose," before diving back onto the skin where my neck curved into my shoulder.

The roughness of his morning beard touched off a skirmish in that ticklish spot, and the heat of his mouth was turning my after-sex glow into a flashing green light. If he went on this way, we'd never get out of bed.

I fought for control. "If you want everybody to know, then are we going to be able to announce the engagement?" I asked. "I think, uh," I moaned, distracted. "Stop that. You usually let other people know you're getting married before you send out the invitations."

"Soon. I don't think it'll be real helpful to the undercover drug bust I'm working on right now to have my picture published in the social section of the L.A. Times." His words were muffled as he nuzzled my neck, biting softly.

"You think the crack dealers read the social section of the L.A. Times?" I asked.

"Read? No, but they can look at the pictures."

"Let me go," I said, struggling to release my arms.

"If you promise to be good," he told me with the low, throaty vibrato that worked on two of my most sensitive areas -- only one of which was my inner ear -- and kissed me long and hard.

Looking up at him mischievously, I said, "Oh, I'll be very good."

He let go, and I smacked him on the butt again. Then, laughing, I rolled out of his reach onto the floor, and he came after me, trying his best to land a retaliatory smack on my backside. Laughing, I slipped away and he chased me across the bedroom, but I made it to his walk-in closet and slammed the door behind me, turning the lock just as his fingers reached the knob on the other side.

"Fine," he called through the door. "You can just stay in there."

"I'm not coming out until you call a caterer!" I yelled back.

"Leave it to me!" came the muffled response. "I'm sure our guests will love having Tito's tacos at the reception. Don't worry about a thing. I can picture it now. The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton on Maui, the tables decked with nothing but the finest in purple plasticware, our classy guests expressing their gastronomic delight as they sip Cook's champagne and enjoy their taquitos and menudo."

His voice was growing fainter, as though he were leaving the bedroom, or at least pretending to.

I spoke loudly so that my voice would carry through the thick door. "This is exactly why straight men aren't allowed to plan their own weddings!"

"You're only saying that because you think I'll forget to order the piñata."

Stifling a laugh, I put my ear to the cherrywood door and listened intently. We were at Evan's house, and his master bedroom was a spacious affair. There was a good twenty feet of sisal flooring between the bed and the closet, and I could just picture him sneaking across it. I closed my eyes to try to pick up a soft footfall or a crackle in the matting, but all I got was eerie silence.

Most likely he was watching the door from the other side.

I could play the waiting game. I sat down on the thick wool carpet.

Through the door I heard the muffled ringing of a phone. I hoped he'd answer it and give himself away, but it rang a couple more times and then stopped. Still no activity, and I bore easily.

"Honey?" I called out, cracking the door open an inch or two.

The bed was empty; so was the room. I came out cautiously in case he was waiting to ambush me. But the room was absolutely still. I walked to the foot of the bed and looked out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the back garden and the pool. "Evan?" I tried again, softly, so as not to seem a fool if he was right there somewhere.

No answer.

Then I heard a slight murmuring coming from the bathroom. I tiptoed to the door and got ready to spring on him when he came out. He was whispering, but the marble room magnified the sound, bouncing it out at me.

"I can't come right now. I told you, you need to stay calm and it'll be all right." He was quiet for a moment, and then he said, "That's not fair. You know I care about you, and you should know by now what I'll do for you."

I leaned my head around the doorjamb until I was at an angle where I could see Evan's reflection in the long mirror. He had the phone up to one ear, and as he listened he backed up a step and looked out the half-opened door to check the closet.

Glancing back, I realized I'd left the door open, and I heard him say quickly, "I'll have to call you back."

With a chill in my heart I moved to face the open door. He appeared in it and saw me standing there looking at him.

It seemed as if my inner ear had given up on my sense of equilibrium. The room was rocking, and Evan's face looked guilty and pained.

Trying to keep my voice from freezing up, I asked, "Who was that?"

He sighed and dropped his head, caught. I suppose I should have been grateful that he didn't just lie to me. On the other hand, I was so afraid that I was ready to buy even a weak excuse.

"It's...something I can't talk about." Not surprisingly, he wouldn't meet my eye.

"Why not?" I asked, feeling the closeness between us fall away, as though he were being reeled backward away from me at incredible speed, growing more and more distant, until he was nothing more than an unrecognizable speck.

"Cally, listen." He reached out for me, but I backed away, so he let his hands drop and said, "We've talked about this. There are things it's better you don't know about."

I wasn't going to be put off by that. "Who was on the phone?"

Now his arms came up across his chest; the defensive stance served to alienate me even further by arousing my anger. "You need to let this go," he said in a voice that was half beseeching and half radioactive.

I knew that Evan was such a good detective that he would recognize even the slightest signs of fear or panic. So, I turned my back on him and walked to the bed. When I felt that my indignant anger was shielding the rest of my physical responses, I sat down and faced him. "Listen," I began, "we're engaged. We're picking a date for our wedding. I'm supposed to be the woman you love and trust. How can we ever expect to share each other's lives if there's a huge part of you that's off limits to me?"

Having a tense conflict with someone you're vulnerable to when you are both stark naked is like double exposure. I knew he was affected when he reached for a robe and put it on before he came into the room. "Callaway, this isn't something new."

"Yes," I corrected him, "it is. Because from what I just heard, that wasn't police work, that was something personal." I watched his face carefully and saw a struggle pass across it: an urge to soften and open up versus a trained response to harden and hide.

The training won. "I can't tell you about it, you have to trust me." He moved to the bed and sat down next to me. He touched my leg, then put his hand on my face, turning it gently to look at his. "Please, trust me."

Never in my life had I wanted anything so much; it was right there, trust it, let it go, let him have his life, let him have mine, and know that I was safe anyway. But nothing in my past had taught me how to do that. Starting with a mother I couldn't trust, I'd moved on to a stepbrother who hated me, a father who died when he was the only one I had, and men who loved me for my money.

Trust wasn't something I could bank on.

Not bad.

This was a fairly entertaining story with lots of plot twists and red herrings. The plotline was overly complicated with suspicion cast on pretty much everyone in the book at some point. The heroine is unfortunately a whiny, self-centered drama queen and her tough, practical best friend would seem to be the more appropriate main character! And it's easy to see what's important in the author/actress' personal life, what with all the brand-name dropping throughout the book. The action got underway in the first chapter of the book, which I always appreciate, and continued throughout the story. Good beach reading!

Divine Comedy

This is a fantastic edition of the Inferno. It is the 1st time I've ever read the Divine Comedy besides excerpts attempting to ape the terza rima. While such exerpts are gratifying the way a 3rd generation video tape of a movie may be, it is far more fullfilling to read a 'literal' representation of the Italian text in English and then frame that within the borders of the original Italian. Singleton's notes are also exceptional and lead to a very complex reading of the text. In short, for someone who cannot speak a word of Italian but wants to have the richest reading of the text, from language to content to the culture the poem draws upon, this is the text to purchase. When I complete the Inferno I plan to complete the rest of the Dante's masterpiece with Singleton holding my hand.

CHARLES SINGLETON's translation of Divine Comedy

I capitalize CHARLES SINGLETON because amazon.com pile their customer reviews into one long list, admitting no differences between translations. SINGLETON's very literal prose best serves the reader who would read the original Italian, and clarify his reading by referring to the facing English translation. You needn't have studied Italian for this, though some skill in another Romance language is very helpful. But if you insist on getting your terza rima secondhand, read Pinsky's Inferno(Pinsky has yet to bring over the Purgatorio and Paradiso).

"Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself in a dark wood, where the right way was lost..." Those eerie words open the first cantica of Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," the most famous part of the legendary Divina Comedia. But the stuff going on here is anything but divine, as Dante explores the metaphorical and supernatural horrors of the inferno.

The date is Good Friday of the year 1300, and Dante is lost in a creepy dark forest, being assaulted by a trio of beasts who symbolize his own sins. But suddenly he is rescued ("Not man; man I once was") by the legendary poet Virgil, who takes the despondent Dante under his wing -- and down into Hell.

But this isn't a straightforward hell of flames and dancing devils. Instead, it's a multi-tiered carnival of horrors, where different sins are punished with different means. Opportunists are forever stung by insects, the lustful are trapped in a storm, the greedy are forced to battle against each other, and the violent lie in a river of boiling blood, are transformed into thorn bushes, and are trapped on a volcanic desert.

If nothing else makes you feel like being good, then "The Inferno" might change your mind. The author loads up his "Inferno" with every kind of disgusting, grotesque punishment that you can imagine -- and it's all wrapped up in an allegorical journey of humankind's redemption, not to mention dissing the politics of Italy and Florence.

Along with Virgil -- author of the "Aeneid" -- Dante peppered his Inferno with Greek myth and symbolism. Like the Greek underworld, different punishments await different sins; what's more, there are also appearances by harpies, centaurs, Cerberus and the god Pluto. But the sinners are mostly Dante's contemporaries, from corrupt popes to soldiers.

And Dante's skill as a writer can't be denied -- the grotesque punishments are enough to make your skin crawl ("Fixed in the slime, they say, 'Sullen were we in the sweet air that is gladdened by the Sun, bearing within ourselves the sluggish fume; now we are sullen in the black mire...'"), and the grand finale is Satan himself, with legendary traitors Brutus, Cassius and Judas sitting in his mouths. (Yes, I said MOUTHS, not "mouth")

More impressive still is his ability to weave the poetry out of symbolism and allegory, without it ever seeming preachy or annoying. Even pre-hell, we have a lion, a leopard and a wolf, which symbolize different sins, and a dark forest that indicates suicidal thoughts. And the punishments themselves usually reflect the person's flaws, such as false prophets having their heads twisted around so they can only see what's behind them. Wicked sense of humor.

Dante's vivid writing and wildly imaginative "inferno" makes this the most fascinating, compelling volume of the Divine Comedy. Never fun, but always spellbinding and complicated.
