Deveraux returns to the idyllic Virginia town of Edilean for the finale in her trilogy (Moonlight in the Morning, 2012; Stranger in the Moonlight, 2012) about three former college roommates who find love and purpose within the close-knit community. After being dumped by frozen-food heir Carter, Sophie escapes to Edilean, where her friend Kim gets her a job with her brother Reede, who has been unhappily filling in as the local doctor. Nearly the entire town colludes to get Reede and Sophie together when they see how happy she makes him and, in turn, how much nicer he is to his patients and staff. This group effort to help Sophie find happiness is endearing, but some of the plot points, which include Sophie and Reede foiling robbers who target Edilean’s big masquerade party, are far-fetched and underdeveloped. But this novel does wrap things up neatly for readers who followed the trilogy, with happy endings for Sophie, Reede, and a host of others. --Aleksandra Walker

Is the well running dry?

Let me say I am a huge Deveraux fan. I read her first book, The Black Lyon, when I was fourteen...when it was first published...a really long time ago. She hooked me and I have read everything she has written since. Some I love, some not so much. This one, not even close. I don't mind completely unrealistic if the story is sweet, like "An Angel for Emily", but the town of Edilean is starting to freak me out! I don't mind that a small town that cares about the people in it, I think Susan Mallery does it well with the folks of Fools Gold. But these people...could they be more meddlesome and manipulative? I wasn't really sure why I should care about Sophie or Reede. Neither were very compelling characters for me, and I didn't believe their whirlwind romance. The whole Zorro thing, give me a freaking break! I'm still not completely clear if the robbery was real or a set up to manipulate Sophie further. Because you would think when there was no big explosion, the thieves would have known something was up and bailed at the party. But I guess that would all make sense. I thought Heartwishes was as bad as it would get, but it can and did get worse. Maybe after 30 years I have finally outgrown this author. I hope not, but this book was a disappointment. If you haven't read all of this authors books and want a good read try Holly or The Mulberry Tree or the others I have mentioned here. Ms. Deveraux is capable of beautiful, captivating stories...I hope she finds that magic again.

First, let me say I am a HUGE fan of Jude Deveraux and have been for many many years. I have really enjoyed all of the Edilean books and their wonderful hodgepodge of characters. Hence, I was very much looking forward to reading this book. Sadly....it fell absolutely flat for me.
Characters were certainly likable enough but the story seemed chopped up and disjointed in my opinion. Story lines left hanging, questions unanswered and then the book ended so quickly and garbled it was almost like there was a deadline to meet.
Sophie was mentioned in previous books and her close friendship with Kim and Jecca would have one assume they would at least be a part of this book as well. Sadly they were barely more than an afterthought.
I buy virtually any book Jude writes and although this ranks as my least favorite in the series, I am not upset that I bought it. I truly wish I would have enjoyed it more.

Very Disappointed

I have read every Jude Deveraux book. This one was a little off. It is as if in the middle of the book, another author took over and started writing and was in a hurry to get it finished. I used to look forward to all her new releases, since I am just getting around to reading this one, I think you can tell, not so much anymore.....
