Okay but not "Johanna Lindsey" great

I have read all of Lindsey's novels and am one of the legions of her readers who think that the older novels are in a class by themselves, not matched by the newer ones. This latest novel by Lindsey does not buck that trend, although she manages to recreate some happy memories of her writing when she returns to the Malory clan. The book has excitment and adventure but is careless in the character development and plotline. Written by another author, the expectations would not be so high and this would pass as a good read. But, this is, after all, Johanna Lindsey, whose many novels are absolutely spell-binding.

In this story she returns to the Caribbean scene and pirates. It is less interesting than previous novels set here. Her plotline frequently runs to silly when she groups all the "rescuers" discussing their plans--in the middle of a public inn? Not in the privacy of one of their ships? Or in a private room? Hello? Didn't the editors grasp that this was ridiculously unreal for captains who strategize battles etc? Men who are used to spies everywhere? So of course this device allows their plans to be overheard and go awry. Couldn't she have been a little more thoughtful and clever? Why so sloppy?

Drew, the hero of the tale,is described physically in endless detail. Until the last chapters of the book we never get to feel what he is feeling or thinking except raw physical reactions. When we do, it is as though she is hurrying to finish the book and what she writes about him is totally predictable and disappointing. Yes, the characters do interact, and the story is fast-paced. But it is ho-hum. It is worth reading, but if you really want to have a true Lindsey experience go read her older novels and see why she was once so great.

HILARIOUS, SEXY AND FAST PACED

I loved Drew and Gabrielle's story. Gabrielle a pirates daughter sent to England to find a husband. Drew the brother of Georgina wife to ex- pirate Jame Malory, Drew is also know has a Rake and a Cad, and a confirmed bachelor falls in love with Garielle who has been sent to live with the Malorys while husban hunting. Drew involves her in in a scandal and tries to sails away on his ship the Triton, oh but Gabrielle wants revenge and commenders his ship. read this book and see who will surrender first! Great Love Story!!!

I enjoyed this book so much more than the first in the series. I'm a sucker for unrequited love stories and "If You Desire" fits the bill. Kresley Cole did such a convincing job of making this reader feel the emotional turmoil Hugh MacCarrick went through for the love of his life. I had no doubt that Hugh and Jane would be together forever.

Jane and Hugh have loved each other for ten years. However, Hugh felt he was never good enough for her so he left without a word to become an assassin for the Crown.

Ten years later, Jane is on the cusp of becoming engaged to an earl and has moved on with her life, or so she thought. Danger has struck and only one man can protect her, but at what cost? He must marry her, against both of their better judgements, to protect her. For it will be a temporary marriage, to remain unconsummated, and dissolved as soon as the Danger has been disposed of. Jane, angered at the decision, vows to torture Hugh with lust and she succeeds. Hugh has loved her for so long and is powerless to resist her, but resist her he does.

What follows is an intense love story with super hot sensual tension, very steamy love scenes, hero-jealousy, and the hero is to die for. I took off half a star because the dialogue was a bit too modern for the time period and threw me at first, but by the end I was so engrossed it didn't bother me at all.

"If You Desire" is a definite keeper and I cannot wait for "If You Deceive". I also recommend: Captain of All Pleasures and The Price of Pleasure by Kresley Cole.

Cursed to Desire

Cole is new to me. Her style of writing, storyline, and characters are appealing. I tried another book from the Wroth series and decided to try this one and she hooked me.
The MacCarrick men are cursed Scots. They are cursed never to know love or have children. However, the curse is incomplete and obscured by blood. But, the curse is fated to complete its course inspite the stubborn Scots to do right. Courtland, cursed mercenary is rescued by Anna the Andorrian. Both try to do the right thing, however; differ on the method to achieve the goal. Courtland is less than courtly goaded by Annalia's taunts. The stubborn Scot is determined to save Annalia from Pascal, the conniving general, machinations while Anna is willing to yield to save her brother captured by Pacal. The sparing between the characters is subtly humrous and gently loving. The second storyline of Alexis and Olivia is equally interesting. Who will win in the game of strong will? That is the question that pushes you the continue reading.
I would recommend this book. the story hooks you and keeps you hooked.

I love Lowell Herrero’s artwork. I first discovered it through the Lang Company on their calendars, mugs, stationery and the like. I especially like Herrero’s cat paintings. So when I saw this book, “Fat Cats: I’m Not Fat, I’m Fluffy” featuring his cat artwork, I had to order it. The cat on the cover looks a lot like one of my cats. The book is small, just over 5”x5”. It consists of 64 thick, colorful pages of cat pictures, each one with an accompanying humorous statement. (Examples: “I’m allergic to food. I break out in fat.” and “My talents are many. They include bookend, paperweight, and seat warmer.”) Great book for most any cat lover. Would recommend.

Just what I wanted

Exactly what I wanted. About the size of a checkbook, which is small enough to carry around in my purse, but big enough to have blocks for each day that are large enough to write stuff in. I know most people do this kind of thing on their phones now, but I still like having a paper version of my schedule; it just works better for me. Encounters With Greek Gods

Blood of the Heroes (2006) is the first SF novel in the Jason Thanou series. Some centuries from now, humans have achieved interstellar travel. Humanity has also discovered time travel, although only to the past. The Temporal Regulatory Authority controls all such travel.

In this novel, Commander Jason Thanou of the Hesperian Colonial Rangers has been called back to Earth. As a retired member of the Temporal Service, he has been recalled to lead a trip into the past. The three time travelers will be carried back to 1628 BC to witness the eruption of Santorini, the most powerful energy release in history. The Temporal Service has never before sent humans back that far into time.

Jason is a very experienced time traveler. He is thoroughly used to Temporal Service methods and techniques. And he has become acclimated to the transitions effects. Of course, no one has ever taken quite as long a time trip.

Jason is a native of the Hesperian colony and is rather tired of the Earthan arrogance. The major reason that he left the Service was this attitude that Earth is the center of the universe, both socially and technologically. His boss -- Kyle Rutherford -- is a prime example of such geocentricism.

Jason will be the mission leader. Deirdre Sadaka-Ramirez will be the geological specialist and Sidney Nagel will be the historical specialist. Deirdre is a native of Mithras, which happened to be inhabited when a slower-than-light colony transport reached the planet. The autochthones proved to be insensately ferocious and the colonists were unable to leave the planet. The resulting colonial society had been very protective of fertile females, but the women have since reacted to the past by become extreme feminists.

Nagel is a native of Earth and is a noted historian. Unlike other noted historians, Nagel is physically fit enough to survive the TRA physical training requirements. An arrogant geocentrist much like Rutherford, he often appeals to Rutherford's prejudices. Still, he also occasionally incites Rutherford's professionalism by suggesting alternative procedures. Nonetheless, Nagel knows the geography and culture of that period as well as anyone available to the TRA.

Rutherford gives the travelers a tour of the area where they will be operating. Naturally, the landscape and buildings differ from those that they will be seeing. However, the landscape should be fairly close to the contemporary hills and valleys. Except, of course, for the area of the Santorini caldera and cones.

In this story, Jason, Deirdre and Nagel arrive in the TRA installation in central Australia. After briefly visiting their rooms, they are taken to the medical facilities for implantation of the Temporal Retrieval Device within their left arm. Then they undergo various forms of treatment to cleanse their systems of microorganisms that might be harmful to the people of the past.

Later, they are taught the local language by neural induction. TRA has sent an unmanned probe to Argos -- a minor town in the target area -- to record the language. Upon hearing this news, Nagel wants to suspend the trip while he prepares a paper on the discovery that the local language is an early form of Achaean Greek. Rutherford promptly puts a stop that idea.

After being completely briefed, clothed and equipped, Jason, Deirdre and Nagel are sent to an August dawn near Argos in 1628 BC. They walk into town and discover that they are comprehensible -- although with an atrocious accent -- to the locals. After spending the night in the megaron of Acrisius -- the local king -- they travel toward Lerna.

This story has the threesome make some astounding discoveries. On the road to Lerna, they are attacked by bandits, but are holding their own before the god Eurymedon intervenes. After the god leaves with Deirdre on his flying chariot, Jason takes care of the remaining bandits and leads Nagel on the rescue of Deirdre.

This first encounter sets the stage for the rest of the book. Deirdre is abducted and Jason has to rescue her. Deirdre is very upset at the way she is fulfilling the stereotype.

Then, too, the god Eurymedon is only the first of many gods in this time period. Although humanoid, the gods are obviously not human. Then Jason meets a seagod who is even less humanoid.

This tale is packed with action, usually involving the rescue of Deirdre. Despite the many captures of Deirdre by gods, pirates and bandits, the story contains very little mention of sex and that is all offstage. The violence is minor, unless one considers a truly huge volcanic eruption as violence in the usual sense.

Recommended for White fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of minor combat, historical locales and customs, and deities flying around the countryside.

It's been done before, and better.

By Andre Norton in the Time Traders novels, for starters. If you're going to use an old idea, it needs to have a fresh angle or at least be well done. This book has neither.

It starts with a forced-feeling conflict between the hero and his old boss, for no good reason, and one never becomes apparent later. Mr. White seems to understand that stories should start with conflict, but not that the conflict should have something to do with the plot.

His characters don't act in character, or even seem to be sure what their character is: What would you expect an alien on a backward planet to do if he finds someone in his power in possesion of anachronistic high technology and suspects they're from the future?
In this novel he doesn't take them in for questioning, doesn't take their high tech stuff away, doesn't do anything else his character OUGHT to do, he lamely turns them over to the weak locals who immediately let them escape. (p. 104-105) Of course they need to escape for the show to go on, but that's a lame reason and kills believability. Later they kill and vaporize one with no investigation, just so they won't find out about him. (Author's motivation, not theirs)

The cardboard babe, Deirdre, can't seem to make up her mind just what sort of girl she is. First we find her relieved that she won't have to wear a breast-baring costume. Then on page 131 we find that she is the sort who takes "plenty of opportunities to demonstrate her indifference to traditional notions of physical modesty." Then just 7 pages later she won't dress down for a swim, even though it would acceptable in the culture. This kind of inconsistency in a character equals laziness in an author.
The indigenes of the era are just as inconsistent. The main "Hero", offspring of a "god," grown up with seemingly supernatural and strange things, swoons into unconsciousness on page 144 at the mere sight of an alien, for no better reason that to let the time travelers have a private, and painfully obvious expository dialogue. Of course the Hero wakes up when the plot needs him to, after the long tedious explanations for the benefit of the reader are over.

Another eye-roller is when our heroes find themselves in the alien's home base. Our main hero is able to satisfy himself by a "quick survey" of the room that these aliens from the stars have no "cameras or audio pickups in the chamber." Of course they don't, and we can be assured that these star-traveling aliens who have been at war with other high-tech aliens (who can make themselves invisible) for millenia have never heard or thought of hidden monitoring equipment. How can we be so sure? Because the plot needs our heroes to have some private conversation here! What other reason could there be? In this book, none other is needed.

There are many other examples but this review is long enough. The bottom line: too many characters doing too many stupid and uncharacteristic things jarring you out of the story to make it an enjoyable read. Reread Andre Norton's "The Time Traders" instead.

Excellent page turner

After reading "The Prometheus Project" and now "Blood of the Heroes," I've become a fan of Steve White's books. "Blood of the Heroes" mixed Greek mythology, history and a number of twists in this page turner that explains the real history of the Greek Gods and other historical figures from 1628 BC. I won't give away who we meet (for one thing, without the context it would sound corny), but I enjoyed running to my computer to look up some of the mythological and/or historical figures we met.

A compilation of neat stories, all gems

Since I like Misty Lackey and Rosemary Edghill enough to buy them in hardcover, I'll focus on the other stories.

"Bright As Diamonds" by Barb and Michael Caffrey reminds me most of the Lackey/Edghill collaborations, as their style and story reflect that "universe" faithfully. I appreciated their use of the Brisingamen and elements of Scandinavian fantasy -- they incorporated lesser-known mythology into the Lackey/Edghill universe in a smooth manner.

"Bottle of Djinn" was also amusing, and a modern version of the djinn versus humans.

In "Red Fiddler", Dave Freer brings his updated Fear Dearg, the Irish "red man" transplanted to Africa, to us in a thoroughly enjoyable story. True to form, Dave finds some way to bring the forgotten tricksters of our past into a modern world, while keeping their low and vile humor wickedly certain.

"All That Jazz" by Jenn Saint-John..all I can say is, "That idiot, Norenlod."

"Six-Shooter" by Ellen Guon and "The Waters and the Wild" by Misty Lackey were both compelling looks at more disturbing topics. Suicide, in "Six-Shooter" is.."encouraged" by evil beings who then consume the souls of the hapless suicides. Some of the souls fight back for as long as they can. "Waters" begins with a man explaining how someone helped him through a difficult adolescence, and although a sniper's bullet takes him out of this life, he finds that person again.

All of the stories were written by seasoned professionals, even if some of the authors are not widely known to the discerning reader. The skill with which they write is clearly evident, and I look forward to future collaborations in this universe, and perhaps even solo endeavors by these authors (one can only hope!).

I didn't realize how much I did not like 1st person books until I started this series. Didn't even finish the first book, and I usually love the way Mercedes Lackey writes. For example, I have all of her 500 Kingdoms series.

Sliding Down the Razor Blade of Life

Ever wondered what was just around the corner? Felt like you were being watched, but when you turned around, nobody was there? Maybe you were wrong. Maybe there is something there, behind the flats and props of ordinary reality.

Mercedes Lackey, Ellen Guon, and Rosemary Edghill created a look behind the scenes in their Bedlam's Bard series. What would happen if elves continued to exist in the present day? What would happen if they came to America with the colonists? And what would they be doing?

In Bedlam's Edge, they've opened their universe to other writers, including talented newcomers Barb and Michael Caffrey (who sadly, passed away suddenly and too young), who share their own takes on the world of Urban Elves.

Dave Freer and Eric Flint, Mercedes Lackey's co-authors in the Heirs of Alexandria series (if you haven't read the series, go immediately and buy all of them, including A Mankind Witch, the latest.), Roberta Gellis, Rosemary Edghill, India Edghill, and Mercedes Lackey herself all contributed to this excellent collection of short stories.

Do you have to have read all the other books in the series to enjoy this one? Heck, no! In fact, it stands alone better than most anthologies do.

This is a terrific collection. Every story is a jewel.

Good book,Careful about the used ones

Remember when buying this book used that it was most likely bought for the expert consult access alone and people are reselling it after taking out the code. Most people probably don't care about the online access anyways and just want the books. Just wanted to make sure no one makes the mistake of buying it used and realizing that they dont have access to the online features.

Having said that, the book is good, I like the organization better than the 9th edition and it has better graphics. The expert consult is kinda unremarkable (and the site boots you every few minutes which angers me, it is also just all around glitchy if you get it you will see what I mean) the additional videos are short, very short like 20 seconds a piece and where technology is at this time I cant help that this feels like something that was made a decade ago. There is just so much opportunity to enrich the experience with videos over anatomy and procedure, and knowing about the men who authored it I know there are thousands of hours of potential video that could have been included. Hell maybe even some of the hours and hours of lectures that they all have given too. Get my point?

In the end because of the fact that the online access is subpar and sub enriching, and because the book doesn't add much to the past edition it feels more like a 9.1 edition, better and updated but not the next step, it is nowhere near the step forward that the 9th edition was.

However, I would still get this over the 9th edition, because in the medical field you need the newest research and techniques. Just buy a used one that someone has taken the access code out of if you really like those books on your shelf or buy a new one take the access code and sell it if you dont mind having to use the website and being booted constantly.
