Great little calendar.
By 40east
The calendar was just what I expected. I keep a small wall calendar in my walk-in master closet so I can write my daily weigh-ins, mark important dates, and in general know what day it is (ha). This calendar serves that purpose and the pictures are adorable. They bring a smile to my face.

This calendar really suits my needs as I am a dog trainer and use with clients to keep track of their sessions. The content is really cute and the photos are amazing. Would have preferred a bit smaller version but this one easily posts on refrigerator or cork board so it worked out.

Chapter 1 from "Change of Heart" by Jude Deveraux in A Holiday of Love
The man behind the desk looked at the boy across from him with a mixture of envy and admiration. Only twelve years old, yet the lad had a brain that people would kill to have. I mustn't appear too eager, he thought. Must keep calm. We want him at Princeton -- preferably chained to a computer and not allowed out for meals.
Ostensibly, he had been sent to Denver to interview several scholarship candidates, but the truth was, this boy was the only one who the admissions office was truly interested in, and the meeting had been set to the boy's convenience. The department dean had arranged with an old friend to borrow office space that was in a part of town close to the boy's very middle-class house so he could get there by bike.
"Ah hem," he said, clearing his throat and frowning at the papers. He deepened his voice. Better not let the kid know that he was only twenty-five and that if he messed up this assignment he could be in serious trouble with his advisers.
"You are quite young," the man said, trying to sound as old as possible, "and there will be difficulties, but I think we can handle your special circumstances. Princeton likes to help the young people of America. And -- "
"What kind of equipment do you have? What will I have to work with? There are other schools making me offers."
As the man looked at the boy, he thought someone should have strangled him in his crib. Ungrateful little -- "I'm sure that you'll find what we have adequate, and if we do not have everything you need we can make it available."
The boy was tall for his age but thin, as though he were growing too fast for his weight to catch up with him. For all that he had one of the great brains of the century, he looked like something out of Tom Sawyer: sandy hair that no comb could tame, freckles across skin that would never tan, dark blue eyes behind glasses big enough to be used as a windshield on a Mack truck.
Elijah J. Harcourt, the file said. IQ over 200. Had made much progress on coming up with a computer that could think. Artificial intelligence. You could tell the computer what you wanted to do and the machine could figure out how to do it. As far as anyone could tell, the boy was putting his prodigious brain inside a computer. The future uses of such an instrument were beyond comprehension.
Yet here the smug little brat sat, not grateful for, what was being offered to him but demanding more. The man knew he was risking his own career, but he couldn't stand the hesitancy of the boy. Standing, he shoved the papers back into his briefcase. "Maybe you should think over our offer," he said with barely controlled, anger. "We don't make offers like this very often. Shall we say that you're to make your decision by Christmas?"
As far as the man could tell, the boy showed no emotion. Cold little bugger, the man thought. Heart as cold as a computer chip. Maybe he wasn't real at all but one of his own creations. Somehow, putting the boy down made him feel better about his own IQ, which was a "mere" 122.
Quickly, he shook the boy's hand, and as he did so he realized that in another year the boy would be taller than he was. "I'll be in touch," he said and left the room.
Eli worked hard to control his inner shaking. Although he seemed so cool on the exterior, inside he was doing cartwheels. Princeton! he thought. Contact with real scientists! Talk with people who wanted to know more about life than the latest football scores!
Slowly, he walked out the door, giving the man time to get away. Eli knew that the man hadn't liked him, but he was used to that. A long time ago Eli had learned to be very, very cautious with people. Since he was three he had known he was "different" from other kids. At five his mother had taken him to school to be tested, to see whether he fit into the redbirds or the bluebirds reading group. Busy with other students and parents, the teacher had told Eli to get a book from the shelf and read it to her. She had meant one of the many pretty picture books. Her intention had been to find out which children had been read to by their and which had grown up glued to a TV.
Like all children, Eli had wanted to impress his teacher, so he'd climbed on a chair and pulled down a college textbook titled Learning Disabilities that the teacher kept on a top shelf, then quietly went to stand beside her and began softly to read from page one. Since Eli was a naturally solitary child and his mother did not push him to do what he didn't want to do, he had spent most of his life in near seclusion. He'd had no idea that reading from a college textbook when he was a mere five years old was unusual. All he'd wantedto do was to pass the reading test and get into the top reading group.
"That's fine, Eli," his mother had said after he'd read half a page. "I think Miss Wilson is going to put you with the redbirds. Aren't you, Miss Wilson?"
Even though he was only five, Eli had recognized the wide-eyed look of horror on the teacher's face. Her expression had said, What do I do with this freak?
Since his entry into school, Eli had learned about being "different." He'd learned about jealousy and being excluded and not fitting in with the other children. Only with his mother was he "normal." His mother didn't think he was unusual or strange; he was just hers.
Now, years later, when Eli left his meeting with the man from Princeton, he was still shaking, and when he saw Chelsea he gave her one of his rare smiles. When Eli was six he'd met Chelsea Hamilton, who was not as smart as he was, of course, but near enough that he could talk to her. In her way Chelsea was as much a freak as Eli was, for Chelsea was rich -- very, very rich -- and even by six she'd found that people wanted to know her for what they could get from her rather than her personality. At six the children had taken one look at each other, the two oddities in the boring little classroom, and they'd become eternal friends.
"Well!" Chelsea demanded, bending her head to look into Eli's face. She was six months older than he, and until this year she'd always been taller. But now Eli was rapidly overtaking her.
"What are you doing in this building?" Eli asked. "You aren't supposed to be here." Smugly, he was making her wait for his news.
"You're slipping, brain-o. My father owns this place." She tossed her long, dark, glossy hair. "And he's friends with the dean at Princeton. I've knownabout the meeting for two weeks." At twelve, Chelsea was already on the way to being a beauty. Her problems in life were going to be the stuff of dreams: too tall, too thin, too smart, too rich. Their houses were only ten minutes apart, but in value, they were miles apart. Eli's house would fit into Chelsea's marble foyer.
When Eli didn't respond, she looked straight ahead. "Dad called last night and I cried so much at missing him that he's buying us a new CD-ROM. Maybe I'll let you see it."
Eli smiled again. Chelsea hadn't realized that she'd said "us," meaning the two of them. She was great at the emotional blackmail of her parents, who spent most of their lives traveling around the world, leaving the family business to Chelsea's older siblings. A few tears of anguish and her parents gave her anything money could buy.
"Princeton wants me," Eli said as they emerged into the almost constant sunshine of Denver, its clean streets stretching before them. The autumn air was crisp and clear.
"I knew it!" she said, throwing her head back in exultation. "When? For what?"
"I'm to go in the spring semester, just to get my feet wet, then a summer session. If my work is good enough I can enter full time next fall." For a moment he turned to look at her, and for just that second he let his guard down and Chelsea saw how very much he wanted this. Eli hated passionately the idea of high school, of having to sit through days of classes with a bunch of semiliterate louts who took great pride in their continuing ignorance. This program would give Eli the opportunity to skip all those grades and get on with something useful.
"That gives us the whole rest of the year to work," she said. "I'll get Dad to buy us -- "
"I can't go," Eli said.
It took a moment for those words to register with Chelsea. "You can't go to Princeton?" she whispered. "Why not?" Chelsea had never considered, if she wanted something -- whether to buy it or do it -- that she wouldn't be able to.
When Eli looked at her, his face was full of anguish. "Who's going to take care of Mom?" he asked softly.
Chelsea opened her mouth to say that Eli had to think of himself first, but she closed it again. Eli's mom, Randy, did need taking care of. She had the softest heart in the world, and if anyone had a problem Randy always had room to listen and love. Chelsea never liked to think that she needed anything as soppy as a mother, but there had been many times over the years when she'd flung herself against the soft bosom of Eli's ever-welcoming mother.
However, it was because of Randy's sweetness that she needed looking after. His mother was like a lamb living in a world of hungry wolves. If it weren't for Eli's constant vigilance...Well, Chelsea didn't like to think what would have happened to his mother. Just look at the man she'd married, the horrid man who was Eli's father: a gambler, a con artist, a promiscuous liar.
"When do you have to give them your answer?" Chelsea asked softly.
"My birthday," Eli answered. It was one of his little vanities that he always referred to Christmas as his birthday. Eli's mom said that Eli was her Christmas gift from God, so she was never going to cheat Eli because she'd been lucky enough to have him on Christmas Day. So every Christmas, Eli had a pile of gifts under a tree and another pile on a table with a big, gaudy birthday cake, a cake that had no hint of anything to do with Christmas.
In silence, the two of them walked down Denver's downtown streets, forgoing the trolley that ran through the middle of town. Chelsea knew that Eli needed to think, and he did that best by walking or riding his bike. She knew without asking that Eli would never abandon his mother. If it came to a choice between Princeton and taking care of his mother, Eli would take care of the person he loved best. For all that Eli managed to appear cool and calculating, Chelsea knew that when it came to the two people he loved the most -- her and his mother -- inside, Eli was marshmallow cream.
"You know," Chelsea said brightly, "maybe you're overreacting. Maybe your mother can get along without you." "Without us," she almost said. "Who took care of her before you were born?"
Eli gave her a sideways look. "No one, and look what happened to her."
"Your father," Chelsea said heavily. She hesitated as she thought about the matter. "They've been divorced for two years now. Maybe your mother will remarry and her new husband will take care of her."
"Who will she marry? The last man she went out with ended up 'forgetting' his wallet, so Mom paid for dinner and a tank full of gas. A week later I found out he was married."
Unfortunately, Randy's generosity didn't just extend to children but to every living creature. Eli said that if it were left up to his mother, there wouldn't need to be a city animal shelter because all the unwanted animals in Denver would live with them. For a moment, Chelsea had an image of sweet Randy surrounded by wounded animals and uneducated men asking her for money. For Chelsea, "uneducated men" was the worst image she could conjure.
"Maybe if you tell her about the offer, she'll come up with a solution," Chelsea said helpfully.
Eli's face became fierce. "My mother would sacrifice her life for me. If she knew about this offer, she'd personally escort me to Princeton. My mother cares only about me and never about herself. My mother -- "
Chelsea rolled her eyes skyward. In every other aspect of life Eli had the most purely scientific brain she'd ever encountered, but when it came to his mother there was no reasoning with him. Chelsea also thought Randy was a lovely woman, but she wasn't exactly ready for sainthood. For one thing, she was thoroughly undisciplined. She ate too much, read too many books that did not improve one's mind, and wasted too much time on frivolous things, like making Eli and Chelsea Halloween costumes. Of course, neither of them ever told her that they thought Halloween was a juvenile holiday. Instead of tramping the streets, asking for candy, they would go to Chelsea's house, work on their computers while dripping artificial blood, and send the butler out to purchase candy that they'd later show to Eli's mom so she'd think they were "normal" kids.
Only once had Chelsea dared tell Eli that she thought it was a bit absurd for them to sit at their computers wearing uncomfortable and grotesque costumes while calculating logarithms. Eli had said, "My mother made these for us to wear," and that had been the final decree; the matter was never mentioned again.

A WONDERFUL ANTHOLOGY
By A Customer
I loved Judith McNaught's Miracles, but just can't understand, why Nicki's story was confined to a short story. As much as I enjoyed the story, I think they deserved a full-length novel. Jude Deveraux's Change of Heart was also great. I always enjoy a good Taggart story, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Frank, Randy and the matchmaking Eli. Jill Barnett's stories are always a joy to read and Daniel and the Angel is no exception. Hark the Herald! is the first story that I have read by Arnette Lamb, and after enjoying this one so much, will definitely be reading more.

Very Helpful Book
By Scotty P.
I got this book so I can better understand what the heck the vet was telling me about two of my ferrets. It is a reall good resouce for pet owners to learn more about the different medical conditions that will come up with owning a ferret. However, be warned!.... This book explains thing in terminology that a vet or a vet tech will understand. It is not a book for the average person per se, but it did help me ask the right questions and to be better informed. One vet I talked to uses this book as a reference quite often. I enjoyed going through this book and it was very educational.

Great pocket pet book

I'm not a pocket pet expert at all, so this is my "go to" book when I get a small critter in. Lots of information, and very easy to navigate. Nice drug charts in the back too.

This book is helpful with my hedgehogs. It is hard to find a vet that is knowledgeable with hedgehog care. I have a farm vet that is willing to see our hedgehogs for our USDA license. He finds this book helpful also.

Such a Pretty Girl, by Laura Wiess

A darkly compelling novel about a young woman who must defend herself against her abusive father. “In the character of Meredith, Laura Wiess has created a girl to walk alongside Harper Lee’s Scout and J.D. Salinger’s Phoebe. Read this novel, and you will be changed forever” (New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice).

They promised Meredith nine years of safety, but only gave her three.

Her father was supposed to be locked up until Meredith turned eighteen. She thought she had time to grow up, get out, and start a new life. But Meredith is only fifteen, and today her father is coming home from prison.

Today her time has run out.

From Booklist
With her father imprisoned, 15-year-old Meredith thinks she could live out her high-school days safely, but when he is released early for good behavior, her security is shattered. A popular youth baseball coach, her father has abused Mer as well as other boys and girls. With strict orders that he not be left alone with his daughter, he is returned to the condo complex where she and her mother live. In contrast to Mer's terror, her mother is giddy with delight at his return, and together the reunited couple plans to conceive another child. Yet in the shadows and stillness, Mer's nightmare begins anew. This is a gritty, terrifying novel about a father's abuse of power and trust, and the way two different teens, Meredith and her paraplegic friend, Andy, deal with that reality. Although not explicit, the novel is honest in its telling. Admittedly sensational, Wiess' story is a page-turner that ultimately sends a startling message of empowerment that, while improbable, is extremely satisfying. Frances Bradburn

Horrible topic beautifully and realistically handled
By DF
I almost passed this book by. The topic was an awful one, and I have had to witness the effects of abuse on children. I didn't think such a topic could be pulled off at all well. But something on the back matter made me pick Pretty Girl up, made me read the first couple of pages and then buy it.

I'm glad I did. Not only did the author convey the reality of the child's suffering, she gave us the effects on the community, the relatives and others. She has portrayed a very bad situation and shown us characters who are damaged and isolated by their experience, and shown us how some of them make it through the damage and out the other side. She shows us how some do not, or can only heal part way. It's about coping. And it was done beautifully.

This is one of those books that can effect a profound change on the reader.

By TeensReadToo
In SUCH A PRETTY GIRL, Laura Wiess grabbed and held my attention from the first page to the last. New Jersey teenager Meredith was supposed to have nine years of safety from her father, so she'd be eighteen and out of the house when he was released from prison. But three years later, when Meredith is fifteen, her father gets out for good behavior. No matter what he did to Meredith and to other children before her, Meredith's mother is more than ready to take him back.

Meredith isn't alone, though. She has her grandmother, the mayor of the town, who wants Meredith to move in with her to escape her father. She has Andy, her best friend, the guy she is in love with, who was also scarred by Meredith's father as a child. She has Andy's mother, who moved across the street from Meredith's family just to keep other children from the horror from which she couldn't protect Andy. She has Nigel, a retired policemen who has a plan to get Meredith's father back in jail and away from children. Even though Meredith is far from alone, she still feels that way when she can't even count on the people every kid is supposed to be able to count on: her parents.

Meredith wants to get her father back in prison. She wants her mother to go back to visiting him instead of having him in their house. She wants to be able to go into her own home without fear. She wants other kids to be safe, too. She doesn't know what that's going to take, and she's certainly not unafraid, but she isn't going to let him hurt her, or any other kids, again.

This moving, powerful novel is one that should not be missed. Once you start reading it, you won't be able to put this book down. I wasn't! It's an emotional book that is beautifully, powerfully written and unique, and it'll stay with you long past the last word.

Laura Wiess's characters are as well-written as the rest of the book, very realistic (in some cases, scarily so). They're three-dimensional characters in an equally (and, again, scarily) believable story that will certainly be a favorite of anyone who reads it. I know it's one of mine now! Don't miss this book.

DADDY'S LITTLE GIRL...
By lawyeraau
This book deals with a young prepubescent girl's ordeal. Raped by her father, who has also diddled with other children in his care and custody, Meredith speaks out about her family's little dirty secret, against her mother's wishes. Consequently, her father is arrested, tried, convicted, and sent to prison. After only three years in prison, rather than the nine Meredith had been led to believe he would get, he is released.

The mother, besotted with her husband, and blind to her child's pain and the enormity of the crime that daddy dearest has committed against his flesh and blood, does nothing to help Meredith. Instead, she speaks inanely about their being a family again, disregarding her daughter's pain and suffering over such a concept. Meredith, now an older and wiser fifteen year old, has her own coping mechanisms that help her deal with both her mother and father's complete betrayal.

Moreover, since the mother is a total enabler, she gets him an apartment in the complex in which she and Meredith live and proceeds to invite him into their home in complete disregard of a court's directive. She does this despite the fact that one of the original arresting officers just happens to live in the complex, as well, and is well-aware of what is going on. This is where the story begins to fall apart, as the author's understanding of law enforcement and the criminal justice system with regards to pedophiles seems off the mark.

While this is an intriguing book with its up close and personal look at incest and pedophilia, it is flawed. Some of the book rings true, while some of it rings quite hollow. Consequently, there were parts that I liked and parts that I did not at all like. Overall, however, I found the writing style to be less than satisfactory, with characters that are too one dimensional and dialogue that seems forced and stilted. Still, the author is able to convey a sense of the damage that incest and sexual abuse does to a young person's psyche. For this alone, the author deserves some kudos. Unfortunately, it is not sufficient to overcome the problems that plague this book.

Clearing the Aisle, by Karen Schwartz

They're getting hitched.

When Rachel Silverstein and her longtime boyfriend Dan Gershon decide to get engaged, they hardly expect that planning a wedding will be more difficult than any life changes they've braved in the five years they've been dating. After all, they already live together. But suddenly everyone from parents to friends to cousins to caterers seems to be losing their minds completely. Surely it can't all be in Rachel's head. Can it?

She's going insane.

Between her budget-crazed father, her flighty mother, her stepmother, her seemingly perfectly well-meaning in-laws, and a fiancé who's suddenly questioning the very institution of marriage, Rachel's barely holding it together. If the guest-list wars and menu battles don't kill her, the dress-shopping will. And what's it going to take for Dan to step up and realize that his beloved future bride needs his help coping with the madness if she's ever going to make it to the altar?

From Publishers Weekly
For 20-something Rachel Silverstein, finding the right guy to marry was the easy part-she'd known her now-fiancé, whom she met during her freshman year in college, for about two minutes before she started referring to him as "the love of my life Dan Gershon." Luckily, Dan returned the affection-but now they have to plan the wedding to prove it, as Rachel's motley crew of family and friends weigh in on an event that is quickly spinning out of control. A writer for a popular young adult novel series, Rachel is living the dream-sort of-of making a living through her craft while enjoying plenty of time to explore her beloved adopted city of New York. But her skinflint father and social-climbing stepmother are issuing sign-and-return ultimatums to her semi-estranged mother, the poster child for borderline personality disorder. Meanwhile, Dan's parents, apparently still mired in the 1950s, blissfully plan a breadwinner-father-stay-at-home-mother existence for the happy couple. Bridesmaid Naomi wants an edgy, experimental dress, and voice-of-reason Aunt Natalie is overcome by familial forces and retreats to the background to dispense martinis and offer a shoulder to cry on. What's a girl to do? Wry observations of young New York life from a bagels-and-lox-at-Barney-Greengrass perspective instead of a Manolos-and-Cosmos-at-Balthazar angle are refreshing, and the hints of Jewish life in New York are atmospheric and charming. Schwartz, a columnist for the New York Sun, offers a pleasant and witty, if somewhat familiar, tale of wedding woes.

Mediocre
By Kate
I really thought I was going to like this book. Twenty-something New York writer Rachel is engaged to her long term boyfriend, now all they have to do is plan a wedding and deal with their friends and family's craziness.

A large part of the book is devoted to her parents' issues with the wedding, the finances of it, as well as her difficult mother and stepmother. During the first half of the book, the interaction with her parents moved the story along, but by the end it was just repetitive. True to life maybe, but a bit boring.

At the end of the book, Rachel's friends who were less than supportive of the wedding were written off as being jealous which I found pat and condescending. The author never explores the possibility that some of their friends might not be marriage-minded or that anyone could just be tired about hearing about the wedding. Everyone's just jealous of Rachel.

As far as bride-to-be books, I preferred Diary of a Mad Bride.

very boring
By A Customer
I struggled to get through this one. It was a bit boring and tedious. There's only so much one can read about people complaining about parents, future in-laws, wedding details, etc. It needed a little more movement. This book wasn't horrible, just boring. Also, since I'm not Jewish, I felt that I needed a Yiddish glossary in the back to make sense of a lot of stuff.
Read either one of Cara Lockwood's books instead for a better read.

Really Should've Gotten 0 Stars!
By Griff
I can't believe this first came out in oversized paperback!! Why would anyone spend that kind of money on this tripe? I agree with the other reviewers regarding this book being unromantic and confusing for anyone non-Jewish. I don't think I've ever read a more pointless, whining book! The main character, Rachel, is completely unlikeable. She whines about everything -- her family, her fiancee and his family, her friends... Nothing seems to please her or make her smile.

Additionally, the author goes on and on about New York and all it's nuances. I was sick to death of the "Seventies" New York, the "Eighties" New York, the Upper West, Lower East and Southern North side etc. Who cares? Was this a travelogue on New York? And since she makes it obvious that NO one had any business living there except "true blue" New Yorkers, it wasn't even a fun diversion. Actually it felt pretty insulting.

And speaking of insulting, the phrase "people our age" came up far, far too often. Apparently people HER age are supposed to be spoiled, whiney brats who feel that they are far superior to people NOT their age. No wonder she's so obnoxious.

This story had no point at all except to showcase Rachel whining about wedding trauma after wedding trauma. And to show off the author's knowledge of Hebrew and Jewish customs. Instead of laughing at the situations the characters found themselves in, I was just glad when it was over -- I was actually a little whiney myself by that time, rather than feeling entertained. The title should have been "My Big, Fat, Whiney Jewish Wedding". I read the book once and gave it to the used book store in a "New York minute". Don't waste your time or money.

DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW SERVICE

NEW REVIEW -- CAREY / Current Clinical Medicine 2010, 2nd Edition. Elsevier, 2010, $110.00. Imprint: Saunders.

Carey, William D., MD

This is a superb second edition of an outstanding comprehensive reference on internal medicine that is well organized by organ system, then by specific topics. Not every known esoteric fact about an organ system is detailed, but there is great depth to the topics that are covered. This edition includes a print and an online version, which is extremely easy to access and use.

The purpose is well stated by the editor, in quoting the founding fathers of the Cleveland Clinic, "More than words, the Cleveland Clinic culture provides an environment of mutual support for development of best clinical practices and for education of those within and without its walls." This book embodies the educational goals and does credit to those founding fathers.

It is complete with everything students, residents, attendings, and faculty members need to practice and to teach. Each section is edited by a leading member of the Cleveland Clinic.

Each chapter covers the definition, prevalence, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms, treatment, and outcomes of its topic, along with references and additional suggested readings. The color illustrations and tables are well constructed and, for the most part, intuitive. The color pathology slides are well done and the radiologic images are well chosen and well annotated.

This is a valuable addition to an internist's or faculty member's library. I have found it exceptionally useful for easily finding the appropriate graphics for teaching purposes. I cannot overemphasize the quality of the online version.

What Not to Name Your Baby, by Joe Borgenicht

They are hard to escape, these days, the names that will cause numerous hardships in the playground. From the pop star wannabees (Courtney, Kylie, Britney), through locations (China, Brooklyn), passing by the shops (Timberland, Armani), along the hippy trail (Leaf, Sunset, Pagan) to those heading for trouble (Romeo, Chastity) the inspirations for baby names are countless. Parents looking for novelty might turn to famous sidekicks (Tonto, Garfunkel) or indeed dictators (Saddam, Benito) before settling on a name that sounds normal but is damn tricky to spell (Kaycee, Genni, Jho). Joe Borgenicht offers nearly 1500 names which absolutely, positively, cannot be used for a child. With the help of WHAT NOT TO NAME YOUR BABY, readers are less likely to have their children resent them - well, okay, that's a stretch - but at least the parents can say they tried.

Every future parent NEEDS to read this book!
By Jason
First and foremost, if you named your kid Tristen, just stop reading. That is easily one of the stupidest names on the planet, and if you don't agree then you simply will not understand this book.

With that out of the way, this book is a necessity. It is as needed as a air and blood. With the ever-increasing population paired with the plummetting intelligence, our population is well on its way to Idiocracy. One of the most obvious signs of this impending demise is the number of crotch droppings who are given increasingly stupid names, and the mouth-breathing parents who breed (Why is it the complete morons who have the most children?). Ignore the books that provide a list of 100,000 names and the lame, archaic meanings. THIS is the definitive guide to ensuring your kid doesn't get tortured semi-regularly while growing up - for the name only, because raising a doofus is on you.

As a general rule, this book instructs soon-to-be parents not to name their kids based on a set of guidelines. Several areas are discussed; for instance, don't name kids after cars, designer products, alcohol, and locations. This is obvious; and statistically, 95% of girls with names in these categories end up being strippers, prostitutes, or vagrants. These are facts, people.

Additionally, naming your child after gangsters, outlaws, serial killers, and criminals is discouraged unless you'd like to find your head in a burlap sack as soon as your child can reach the designer, wooden knife holder on the countertop. There are better ways to experience your child's journey through adolescence than worrying about whether or not your precious little Ted Bundy can figure out the three-digit combination on your gun safe.
Selecting an androgynous for your child is not something the writers of this fine book advise against. Saddling your kid with a Gale, Kelly, Kerry, Jodie, or Jamie is an almost guaranteed method of ensuring beatings, and selecting one of these names is ill-advised. You may as well put a sign that says, "Punch Me" on their back as you send them to school each day.

There are several other handy guides and lists within the 100+ pages of this book (i.e. popular songs, infamous world leaders, naming for amusement). I read somewhere that scientists have proven naming your child Ursula increases the likelihood of childhood obesity, and superfulously adding a `y' to your kid's name or purposely misspelling it doesn't make the name unique; it makes the name, and you, stupid.

It is my utmost wish future parents take the responsibility of naming their children seriously and avoid the pitfalls of the morons who get the name ideas from Entertainment Weekly and celebrity advice (Apple? Rumer? Phoenix Chi? Seriously?). Remember, Vanessa Diane Carrier sounds like a great name, but it doesn't take long for some enterprising smart alec with a quick wit to use the initials from the first two names to give your child a nickname, and nightmares for years to come.

A great gift for the parents-to-be

Everyone has an opinion on baby names. This is a great shower gift for the parents-to-be to make them laugh! It was fun to just read through and compare the descriptions of names with people we actually knew! An enjoyable fun read.

Wonderful book - it's mean to be tongue-in-cheek (I think) but it makes a lot of valid points. Every new parent thinking of names for their bundle of joy needs to read this book and take notes!
