Foxmoor is back!

I will admit I've had a soft spot for this couple since I read the Royal Brotherhood of Bastards series, so I had high expectations going into this one. I am happy to say I was not disappointed! I love that Foxmoor came back from India with a monkey! I love that he had changed just enough to allow for some personal growth but not enough to give up his ambitions, and I love that Louisa isn't afraid to put him in his place when he needs it. These two have a natural chemistry going on, and a kinship that makes them perfect partners for tackling the issues they take on (outside of their budding relationship).
I was a little disappointed in the ease with which Draker sat back and watched the courtship happen. Given how protective he was of his sister in his own book, I expected a bit more drama on that front, but to be honest, I think it worked that he didn't butt in too much. It left things in the hands of Foxmoor and Louisa and that made for one amazing romance story. :) An easy 5 stars for this one. Thoroughly enjoying this series.

The star of this story was definitely the monkey, Raji,. The back and forth power plays between our independent, basard daughter of King George IV, Louisa, and the power hungry Duke was quite childish (mostly on his part). We have the all too frequent melting to his kisses but I don't want to give up my independence to his I know she melts and succumbs to my kisses so I'll use that to control her and ~groan~ 'make her mine's. He's going to 'make her' call him by his Christian name by kissing her (because he knows it irritates and disrespects her) if it takes all day. I was so proud of her, initially, when she nonchalantly walked away after he kissed her but then she just fell into the same old routine as most of our heroines. There was such storyline potential here but alas it went away. Sorry, I cannot pay $6 for the next volume.

A Satisfying Conclusion--If You Make It to the End!

Ultimately, I wound up enjoying this book. As other readers mention, the pace is a bit slow and the characters not easy to love until about halfway through the book. It turns out great in the end--the plot totally sucked me in and I wound up really caring about the characters and rooting for them to wind up happy togther.
A main reason I awarded only three stars, however, is that some of the quirks of this book are just TOO odd to be relatable. Specifically a couple of the love scenes--heroine gets gravely injured, hero fears she might die and sends for the doctor. Yet five seconds later they're going at it? Really? There were a couple of other instances that were peculiar like that, where I couldn't get into the romantic scene because I was so puzzled and disturbed by the circumstamces.
Overall, I did enjoy the book, and I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for entertaining page-turners. You'll have to decide for yourself if this one is fantastic or just okay.
