Excellent Starting Point

This book has very helpful tables, indexes and suggestions. The book describes fairly well most of the diagnosis in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) and what limitations an individual with a specific diagnosis would encounter. It makes recommendations such as: working with people versus working with things, working at a desk versus a physical job, jobs that require high versus low attention to detail; and it states which disorders would cause and individual to lean more toward one career or position over another.
For example: Schizoid Personality Disorder. This person should be working with things, not people or animals, because of struggles relating to others. This does not mean everyone with this disorder shouldn't work with animals or people, just most. A person with this disorder can pay attention to details. Depending on individual disposition they may want to be physically active or they may prefer a desk job. Therefore some good career options might be: data entry for a desk job and mail room sorting for a more physical job. If they have an education to warrant a position, they may do well in research positions. If only a high school education, maybe think about night-shift bookkeeping positions or doing cleaning work/room service in a hotel.
The book also tells little stories about how an individual with each of the diagnosis feels at a job and what they might go through. This is very useful for empathizing with clients and understanding why they have the these disorder related limitations over just knowing the limitations.

This is an important book. It details work accommodations possible for people living with mental illness and issues which need to be addressed by placement specialists. However, It needs an update from a recovery perspective.
This book leaves out essentials like using a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) and other evidence-based practices (Peer Support, Family Psychoeducation, etc). This book is heavy on the medical/prognosis and light on the potential of those living with mental illness based on their individual strengths, character & abilities.

Great for Rehabilitation

I was required to get this book for a diagnostics class in a rehabilitation counseling program. This is a real keeper for any professionals in the field. The book has an easy layout and covers the most common psychiatric disorders common in rehabilitation settings. There are also excellent examples that can be used for case studies.
