As scholarship has made its importance to American letters more manifest, editions of the 1855 version of Whitman's masterpiece have multiplied. This one, prepared in honor of the poem's 150th anniversary, will be hard to beat. Edited by major Americanist Reynolds (Walt Whitman's America, etc.), it comes as close as possible, without being a facsimile, to reproducing Whitman's original text, which he famously self-published. The familiar litho of the young rough with open collar opens the book, and Reynold's terrific and informative afterword closes it, along with contemporary reviews (some written by Whitman himself) and Emerson's famous letter ("I greet you at the beginning of a great career..."). Those who know Whitman only through the beautiful but bloated 1892 "deathbed" edition of Leaves of Grass will find here a lean, searing celebration of self.

Review
"Whitman's best poems have that permanent quality of being freshly painted, of not being dulled by the varnish of the years."

A real, American beauty.
By Lady Reader's Bookstuff
The 1855 deluxe edition is relatively short compared to the later revised editions and reflects the rare and obscure quality of the original. These poems are full of Whitman's original fire before he made revision after revision. These are not just poems, this is a philosophical treasure full of the simple thoughts from a simple but genius of a man. I adore the raw, honesty in which Whitman published this book of poems.

“Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
It is not far. It is within reach.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land.”

Resist much, obey little.
By J. King
This quote, this one right here, is all you need to read in order to make up your own mind about this book. If you're not deeply touched by this one quote, this book likely won't matter much to you. But if you, like me and many others, feel that this one quote speaks to you on another level, you need to read this.
"Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you.
You must travel it by yourself.
It is not far. It is within reach.
Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know.
Perhaps it is everywhere - on water and land."

Full of inaccuracies
By Margaret
This printing is not a true representation of Whitman's work. Many of the poems have been omitted. Poems 90-100 appear on pp. 87-97, and then poems 90-100 are printed AGAIN on pp. 98-108. The text for poem 100 is different each time. The copyediting is extremely poor. This is not an acceptable rendering of Whitman's writing.
