Everybody Say Amen, by ReShonda Tate Billingsley

Gold Pen Award–winning author ReShonda Tate Billingsley returns to the Houston congregation of her #1 Essence magazine bestseller, Let the Church Say Amen, in this warm and powerful sequel.

When her husband hears God’s call to become a preacher, Rachel Jackson Adams is distressed—she grew up a preacher's daughter, and knows how difficult life under the microscope can be for a reverend’s family. But hot-headed Rachel has toned down her wild ways, and for the sake of her marriage and her two children, she is now the reluctant first lady of Zion Hill, unafraid to rock the boat with her unconventional ideas for revitalizing the church. When her son, Jordan, begins fighting at school, Rachel turns to the boy’s father, Bobby—Rachel’s first love from years ago. Married now himself, there should be nothing between them except their concern for Jordan—so why does seeing Bobby again feel so distractingly tempting? With her brothers facing dramas of their own, and her father, Reverend Simon Jackson, recovering from illness, Rachel must listen carefully to discover what God truly wants for her—and to decide if Bobby is the lover of her dreams or the devil in disguise

Prologue

If looks could kill, Lester Adams would definitely be pushing up daisies.

Rachel glared at her husband and silently played her mantra in her head: Do not act a fool. You are a strong, mature woman who has left those childish ways behind you. Whatever you do, do not act a fool.

That had been Rachel's theme for the last five years, and had helped her out of numerous situations. It wasn't working today.

This fool must be on crack. Rachel inhaled deeply. "What did you just say?"

Lester got up and began his usual pacing as he tried to explain to his wife the reasoning behind his decision.

"It's not like this is something I just want to do on a whim," he said.

Rachel massaged her temples. She had done so well at walking the straight and narrow since she'd tied the knot. Marrying Lester had been the best decision she had ever made. He kept her grounded. No, he wasn't the most handsome thing, but he loved her unconditionally, and that love had made her want to be a better woman. But what he was saying now was absolutely insane.

"I talked this over with your father and he's pleased with the decision," Lester added nervously.

Rachel remained at a loss for words. She stared at her husband. The red pimples were gone from his sandpaper-colored skin thanks to Proactiv, and she'd convinced him to shave off the red mop that had sat on his head for years. Now he wore a closely cropped fade. Right about now, though, she wished she could grab that head of hair and shake some sense into him.

"Baby, I know you don't understand this." Lester sat down next to her. She immediately stood up. It was her turn to pace their spacious three-bedroom apartment.

"You're right. I don't," she said. "I don't believe you're standing here telling me this."

"Come on. You act like I'm telling you I had an affair or something," Lester tried to joke.

"I think I might be able to handle that better than this." Rachel shot him a look to let him know she wasn't joking.

Lester sighed. "Rachel, when the Lord calls, He calls. This is my destiny. You know how I've been telling you I was tired of insurance and felt I had a greater calling. Well, this is it."

Rachel spun on her husband. "A preacher, Lester? You want to be a preacher? Even worse, you want me to be a preacher's wife?" She stared at him as if that was the absolute craziest thing she'd ever heard.

"That's exactly what I want, Rachel."

Rachel cocked her head in confusion. "What makes you think those people at Zion Hill -- 'one of the most prominent churches in Houston,' as they like to boast -- will let you be their preacher anyway?"

"Come on. After Reverend Wright got arrested in the pulpit, I think the board wants someone safe like me."

She could understand that much. That whole situation had been a fiasco. Deacon Wright had finally gotten his wish a year ago when Rachel's father, Rev. Simon Jackson, had stepped down as pastor of Zion Hill. The deacon was able to get his nephew, Milton Wright, in as the church's new preacher. The only problem was that Reverend Wright never informed anyone of his outstanding warrants for hot checks -- more than fifty thousand dollars' worth.

The police had come and arrested him right in the middle of Sunday morning service. Wright had taken off running right in the middle of the sermon with the police chasing him all the way down the street. It was a nightmare that took Zion Hill months to live down.

But what Rachel couldn't understand was why her husband had to be the replacement. "Since when did you even want to be a preacher? Besides, you haven't been to theology school or anything."

Lester sighed in frustration. "Not every minister is trained in the Word. For some, it's just a calling."

"You really think those people at Zion Hill will let somebody with no experience be their preacher?"

"I've been a member of that church since I was born, Rachel. They support what I'm doing wholeheartedly. They know me and they don't have to worry about any mess like what happened with Reverend Wright. And it's not like I'll just jump in the pulpit. Your father has agreed to mentor me. I can also take part in a six-week theological seminar. And I'll work closely with the deacon board."

"Lester, this is insane." Rachel tried to reason with him. "You can't possibly want this. Is this some early midlife crisis or something? If so, go buy a motorcycle or get a tattoo."

"Rachel, if you half paid attention to me you'd know that I have always felt something was missing in my life! I've been praying on it and meeting regularly with your father about it," Lester said. "I've even preached a couple of times at different churches in the city already."

"What? When did this happen and why didn't I know anything about it?" Sure, she was wrapped up in her own little world most of the time, but surely she would've known about her husband having a desire to preach, let alone actually having preached somewhere.

Lester cast his eyes downward. "You never show an interest in what I'm doing. I didn't want to hear you try to talk me out of it, so I didn't tell you what I was doing."

Rachel shook her head as she continued walking back and forth across the room. She looked at the family photo of her, Lester, Jordan, and Nia. Both of her kids loved Lester to death. For Nia, he was the only father she'd ever known, since her real daddy didn't half fool with her. Jordan's father, Bobby, was in his life, but the nine-year-old still loved him some Daddy Lester. Rachel couldn't believe she was about to lose the happy home she'd worked so hard to build. But that was what was about to happen because there was no way on earth she would ever be a preacher's wife. She wasn't as buck wild as she used to be, but she definitely wasn't first lady material and didn't care to be first lady material. "This is too much," she said. "This is just coming out of the blue. Are you sucking up to my father, trying to be like the great Simon Jackson?"

Lester jumped to his feet, his frustrations becoming evident. "It's not like that at all. This is not a decision I've made lightly."

Rachel put a finger in the air and began wiggling her neck. She had been doing so well in keeping her ghetto ways at bay. But so much for that. "Decision? So you've already decided?"

He lowered his voice, obviously trying to remain rational. "Rachel, please understand..." He reached out to try and take her arm. She snatched it away.

"I'm not understanding anything!" She leaned in and pointed her index finger in his face. "You understand this. I ain't trying to be a preacher's wife. I spent my life as a preacher's daughter. I hated it growing up. The church always coming first in my family. My daddy never being around. Those holier-than-thou people watching my every move and passing judgment on me. It was horrible! But I didn't have any choice then. I have a choice about this!" She was fuming and was not about to back down. She had to let him know she meant business. Lester was a softie when it came to her. Always had been. She had to make him see this idea wasn't remotely feasible.

"What are you saying, Rachel?" Lester looked like he wanted to cry.

"What does it sound like?" Rachel stared defiantly at her husband.

"It sounds like you're giving me an ultimatum: either you or the Lord."

Rachel didn't budge. "You can make it sound as horrible as you want, I'm just telling you, I ain't trying to be a preacher's wife. Let me rephrase that. I'm not gon' be a preacher's wife."

Lester inhaled deeply before speaking. He looked her in the eye. "And I am telling you," he said, his voice taking on a strength she'd never heard, "I give you everything you want and then some. I cater to your every need, your every wish. But this is something I'm not wavering on. This is my calling and if you don't like it, you can leave." With that Lester turned and stomped out of the house.

Rachel was shocked. In their five years of marriage Lester had never so much as raised his voice at her, let alone issued her an ultimatum. But he had to be confused if he thought his little temper tantrum would change her mind. He was just going to have to find another "calling," because there was no way in hell she was going to be a preacher's wife.

The Quantum Connection (Warp Speed #2), by Travis S. Taylor

Steven Montana, computer whiz and hacker extraordinaire, was attending college in Ohio when his world fell apart. A swarm of huge meteors fell all over the world, on Europe, on the United States, and in particular on Steven¿s home town in California. In an instant, his family and all his friends were gone. Eventually, he learned that the ¿meteor¿ onslaught that had orphaned him had actually been a brief and still secret war between the U.S and its enemies (as told in Warp Speed) using a new warp drive technology that was more secret than top secret. Another secret was that U.S. had been sending faster-than-light ships to other star systems. Most secret of all was that unfriendly aliens were observing the Earth, and while U.S. spaceships were not quite in a war with the unknown aliens, they were shooting at the intruders. Whether any of these answers would do Steven any good was an open question because he learned them only after his was abducted by those very same aliens and was held prisoner on one of their ships orbiting Saturn. At first, he was one of three human prisoners, but he had just seen the aliens completely dissect one of the three, and it looked like either Steven, or the Russian girl who was his fellow prisoner, were scheduled to be the next alien lab experiment. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
In the tradition of Golden Age SF author E.E. "Doc" Smith, Taylor's amped-up sequel to Warp Speed (2004) explodes with inventive action. When nebbishy computer repairman Steve Montana wakes up in a flying saucer, about to be dissected by alien Grays, he starts behaving like the video-game warrior he's only imagined being until now. He slays the aliens, gets rid of their brain implant that's been causing his emotional instability, liberates fellow captive Titania, uses nanomachines to make the two of them superhuman and races back to a secret base on Earth's moon, where Americans are plotting strategy against the Grays. What the story lacks in characterization, it more than makes up for in plot complications. The scenes of hand-to-hand combat are mind-boggling. Thanks to their enhanced physiques, Steve and Titania can move their bodies so fast that they create sonic booms. Even more dazzling is the imaginative playfulness with which Steve creates new tactics, suggesting new cutting-edge scientific possibilities, which lead to even more revelations. Beneath the comic-book exuberance, there's plenty of stimulating and satisfying speculation. (Apr.)

Steve Meets Tatiana
By Arthur W Jordin
The Quantum Connection (2005) is the sequel to Warp Speed. It is set about three years after the Rains, the widespread destruction attributed to meteorites, but actually caused by enemy action.

In this novel, Steve Montana is a computer geek, specializing in software and with considerable knowledge of hardware and firmware. He developed his own operating system as a teenager and won college scholarships for his work. Then the Rains came and Steve lost his friends and family. He becomes clinically depressed.

Larry Waterford is a technical manager at Wright Patterson for the Innovative Concepts Group in the USAF Space Vehicles Directorate.

In this story, Steve is living in Dayton with his dog Lazarus and working at a virtual reality store. He had dropped out of college and is technical support for the VR store customers. One day a man drops off an old game system and Steve is asked to fix it.

The hardware repair is fairly easy and most of the computer disks only need cleaning and surface repair. But one disk is cracked and not playable even after cleaning and surface restoral. Steve forgets his woes for a while as he works on the hardware and software.

When the customer returns, he is impressed by Steve's efforts and the low price of the bill. Later, Larry returns and offers Steve a job with the Air Force if he returns to school. Steve is tired of working under the young VR store manager and the job looks interesting and lucrative, so he fills out the paperwork and enrolls for classes.

While in school, Steve works as a co-op student for the ICG at Wright Patterson. For his first term, Larry gives him a circuit board and asks him to reverse engineer it. Later, he has an exam question in the Advanced Microprocessors class that provides some insight into the circuit.

Steve finally gets his Top Secret clearance and is taken to Washington for a classified briefing. Then security denies him further clearance. Government agents search his apartment for classified data and kill Lazarus while the dog is protecting his home. Steve takes the body back to Bakersfield and buries it there.

This tale involves advanced aliens, superAgents, and warp drives. Steve meets a nice girl and develops a relationship. Then he makes friends with a computer program.

This story is a character study of a depressed technogeek. It involves schematic diagrams, quantum mechanics and pharmaceutical remedies for bipolar disorder. I enjoyed the technogeek part and related to the depression problems.

Steve was not very likeable at the beginning. He bonds with his dog and cries a lot. Then the feds kill his dog. Steve gets mad and develops a different personality.

This novel still resembles a space opera from the 1930s, much like the early works of John W. Campbell, Jr.. Still, it does have more rationale for the rapid technological advances than does the previous book. This is the last volume in the series, but the author went on to co-author some very interesting SF works with John Ringo and a new series on his own. Read and enjoy!

Recommended for Taylor fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of alien relations, interstellar politics, and true romance.

An Up-To-Date Doc Smith
By Paul (Drak Bibliophile) Howard
I have Doc Taylor's Warp Speed and found this book to be a very Good Sequel to it. While it dragged a bit with the main character's depression, it picked up very quickly after he was captured by the aliens. It definitely had the Super-Science that I associate with Doc Smith (the Lensman Series), but I felt the science was definitely possible. I definitely believed in the characters and the science. It was a Good Read and I look forward to the sequels.

This is a nicely done calendar with pictures of all the main cast (with the character of "Blake" and not "Kate" since the calendar was made before the actress left the show). Well worth the money and it's a perfect gift for ant fan of the show.

Feast your eyes on Clarissa.
At twenty-eight (thirty-one), Clarissa Alpert is blessed with a designer wardrobe, a daddy-subsidized apartment, and an A-list speed-dial. But with her twenty-ninth (thirty-second) birthday looming, she starts to panic. Who on earth could possibly make her an honest woman?

She's reserved a table for two.
Enter Aaron Mason, the latest, hottest new producer in town, who Clarissa decides is the future "Mr. Alpert." Catching Aaron's eye is not the problem. He just seems to have his own agenda. Could Clarissa have finally bitten off more than she can chew?

Amazon.com Review
Gigi Levangie Grazer has written one previous novel (Rescue Me), helped pen the screenplay for Stepmom, and, not least, is married to Hollywood uber-producer Brian Grazer (he of the wacky hair and the not-so-wacky partnership with Ron Howard). At first glance, Mrs. Grazer appears to be a complete parvenu as a novelist. Maneater rips off every girl-power/shopaholic source from early Tama Janowitz right up to Sex and the City. Her prose can be ungrammatical, her plot hopelessly predictable, and her characters paper-thin. But Grazer has a secret weapon: her preternaturally acid powers of observation. When she writes about the freaky mores of Hollywood, the book exerts an irresistible pull. Thirtyish LA It girl Clarissa Alpert reflects on her shallow, jobless, mateless (but fabulous!) life, and decides it's high time she was married. She and her four best friends (hello, Sarah Jessica Parker and company) hatch a plan to snag the cutest, hottest young producer in town. What ensues is hardly new territory, but the book is enlivened by Grazer's amazing ability to nail down pop culture ephemera. To wit: "Clarissa was sentimental--she liked saving messages from old friends and C-level celebrities. She had an answering tape collection that dated all the way back to babydoll dresses, sparkle dust and Hole." Her eye for detail--and her refusal ever to make Clarissa lovable, or even likable--make Maneater a hypnotic read. This is fiction-as-gigantic-chocolate-bar. Halfway through, you feel a little off color, but there's no way you're going to stop. --Claire Dederer

From Publishers Weekly
No other actor could capture the voice of spoiled L.A. golddigger Clarissa Alpert as perfectly as Thurman does here. She effortlessly evokes the petulance, sense of entitlement and "Ohmigod, wait 'til I tell you..." Valley Girl shallowness of this hilarious anti-heroine. Thurman effectively differentiates all the character voices, including Clarissa's coterie of colorful girlfriends. She offers a hint of British accent for Simon, Clarissa's pretentious, faux-English ex-boyfriend; a light Spanish accent for Alejandra, Clarissa's Brazilian mom; and a smarmy, false sincerity for the Hollywood movers and shakers who populate Clarissa's world. The story itself is frothy fun with a wicked satirical edge. As soon as she hears of Aaron Mason, the hottest movie producer in town, Clarissa decides to land him and his bankroll for herself, and begins phoning florists and caterers to plan their wedding-before they even meet. Her machinations are successful-or so she thinks. It turns out her quarry has been scheming just as shrewdly, motivated by his own agenda. Perfect for a long road trip or a lazy weekend at the beach, Grazer's entertaining satire is sure to spice up any occasion.

From Booklist
This is the second novel by Grazer, a Hollywood screenwriter, and like her previous novel (Rescue Me, 2000), this one also has been optioned for a major feature film. Here we find the story of an obscenely superficial yet beautiful Beverly Hills resident, Clarissa, who flits about town with a group of her equally obtuse girlfriends. They lead lives of almost unimaginable vacuity. After Clarissa decides that it is time to get married, she set her sights on a man she hardly knows, mainly because of his supposed great wealth. After the briefest of courtships, she finds, upon marrying him, that he is destitute. Her parents have cut her off as well, so her life soon takes a turn for the tacky, all macaroni and cheese and crowded apartment buildings. But this character-building experience has some merit because eventually Clarissa is able to find her true calling and begin a fledgling writing career. The heroine's disdain and sarcasm have their appeal, and even romance fans will enjoy. Kathleen Hughes

Funny stage for a hilarious comedy
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
Hoolywood and Los Angeles entirely contemplated from a woman's point of view, and not any woman, but a young woman who wants to marry a rich man. Her theory about that manhunt, her practice of that sport, her prey and her hunting technique that leads her to a quick marriage and a quick pregnancy. Unluckily she did not check who the man really was and accepted who he was supposed to be. Of course he is not who he is supposed to be and this leads to a tremendous imbroglio. The book is funny, extremely funny and positively optimistic. The author does believe in love and does believe love can survive any small or big detail that may be thought as capable of pooping the party. In other words, this book is not - and it does not pretend to be - very deep about women or Los Angeles. It is a vivid and dynamic picture of the scene and the action that takes place on that scene, or shouldn't I say that stage. Entertaining and relaxing.

Absolutely delicious!
By A Customer
MANEATER is a scrumptious story written in a witty style as sharp as the spike heel of a strappy Manolo sandal. Our heroine, Clarissa, is as shallow as a wading pool, knows it, and wouldn't have it any other way. At first you may not like Clarissa but soon you will be almost as fascinated by her as she is by herself. :) The other characters are just as cleverly written; from her ex-con ageing-playboy, yet loving, father Teddy to her rarely un-intoxicated self-declared genius best buddy Gravy to the (still hot for) ex-boyfriend Simon with the long lingering English accent and spiffy wardrobe.
What's a girl to do? Clarissa is hitting 29 (in Clarissa years)-- OK, so she's bypassed 31 and trying to ignore that 32 is on the way -- knows the younger, firmer, fresher competition for the alpha male is on her bountiful booty and her time bomb of a biological clock is ticking away. If she doesn't get married - but quick - she may have to resort to getting a J-O-B, heaven forbid! Daddy (Teddy to Clarissa) has supported her thus far, but Teddy has threatened to stop paying her rent. So Clarissa sets out to find a suitable -- read rich, handsome - well not too ugly - rich, available, rich, socially sophisticated, (did I say rich?) hunk of prime husband material. And voila, being the woman around town (Los Angeles of course, is there any other?) she finds an appropriate victim, umm, man, Aaron Mason. You know she's going to snare him, but Aaron turns out to be just as feisty as Clarissa and not that easily lead to the slaughter.
Best laid plans and all, well, you know how that works out sometimes. The groom to be has secrets of his own, ones far more creative than anything Clarissa has ever cooked up.
But beyond being just a great beach or poolside read, Maneater is also a good lesson in how we shouldn't raise our daughters. Thank goodness Clarissa's self-realization that taking the seemingly easy, quick way in life to success and happiness is neither easy nor quick, doesn't come too late for our heroine.
Maneater is a great poolside read - fun fun fun - and easy to find, just look for the M.A.C. Lust lipglass colored jacket cover. ;)

Shallow Character, But Amusing Story
By Lindsay Smith
It took me about 100 pages to finally get into this book. I was given this book by a friend, otherwise I never would have picked it up given the premise of the novel. Clarissa Alpert has slept with almost every man in L.A., and now she is ready to look for a husband. Though I don't consider it a bad thing that she has slept with so many men, I thought that it was unrealistic and almost pathetic that she had LITERALLY started planning the wedding before she even went on a date with the guy.

There were many times that I was irked by her and her friend's shallow remarks. However, towards the middle of the novel I realized the reason she was this shallow and unaccomplished in life at the age of 30 was that her mother and father made her that way, discouraging her from joining any sports in the worry that she would have to big of thighs, or not to do hard math even though she was good at it because it was unwomanly.

Overall, I realized Clarissa was not as horrible a person as she seemed. She was actually a very loyal woman, and a great friend. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a shallow read and a strong character. Though Clarissa gets herself in quite a few scrapes, she gets out of them skillfully. As I said, it takes awhile to get into the book, since there definitely is a couple major twists, which surprised me, because I thought I had guessed the ending on page 40, but boy was I wrong.

From Publishers Weekly
Hip-hop star, political activist and now writer, Sister Souljah exhibits a raw and true voice (though her prose is rough and unsophisticated) in this cautionary tale protesting drugs and violence among young African-Americans in the inner city. Winter Santiaga, the 17-year-old daughter of big-time drug dealer Ricky Santiaga, is spoiled and pampered, intoxicated by the power of her name and her sexuality. Riding high on the trade, Santiaga moves the family out of the Brooklyn projects to a mansion on Long Island where things start to disintegrate. Winter's mother is shot in the face by competing drug dealers, the FBI arrest Santiaga and confiscate the family's possessions. Then, while visiting her father at Rikers Island, Winter discovers her father has a 22-year-old mistress and a baby boy. For the first time, Winter feels anger toward her father and pity for her fallen mother. Being the ruthless hood rat that she is, however, Winter leaves her weakened relatives behind and sets off to regain her stature and reinstate her father. Attracted to power, intolerant of those without it, ill-equipped to deal on her own and predisposed to make all the wrong moves, she deceives and steals from those who help her and yet, somehow, she remains a sympathetic character. Winter's obsession with money, possessions and appearances, her involvement in the drug trade and the parade of men she uses lead her down the wrong path. Sister Souljah herself appears as a "fictional" character who voices her belief that Winter's vices are shared by many, and that greed, drugs and violence devalue the lives of urban youth. Souljah peppers her raunchy and potentially offensive prose with epithets and street lingo, investing her narrative with honesty albeit often at the expense of disciplined writing. But this is a realistic coming-of-age story of debauchery with a grave moral. Agent, Elyse Cheney. Author tour.

From Library Journal
The trials and tribulations of young Winter Santiaga are described in gritty detail in this coming-of-age novel, the first by the phenomenally popular rap star who frequently lectures on the themes of this novel: overcoming teenage pregnancy, fatherless households, and drug use in African American communities. As the oldest daughter of a successful drug dealer, Winter lacks for nothing. But after her father moves the family from the projects to a mansion on Long Island, Winters life begins to come apart. Her beautiful mother is shot, her father is sent to prison, and the familys possessions are seized by the government. Winter and her three sisters, Mercedes, Lexus, and Porsche, become wards of the state. Finally, arrested and convicted of transporting drugs in a boyfriends car, Winter receives a 15-year jail term. Sister Souljah herself appears as a character, urging Winter and other young black women to stand up to the men in their lives, abstain from drugs, and practice safe sex. Although the novels writing is amateurish, the message is sincere.

From Kirkus Reviews
Debut novel by hip-hop rap artist Sister Souljah, whose No Disrespect (1994), which mixes sexual history with political diatribe, is popular in schools country-wide. In its way, this is a tour de force of black English and underworld slang, as finely tuned to its heroine's voice as Alice Walker's The Color Purple. The subject matter, though, has a certain flashiness, like a black Godfather family saga, and the heroine's eventual fall develops only glancingly from her character. Born to a 14-year-old mother during one of New York's worst snowstorms, Winter Santiaga is the teenaged daughter of Ricky Santiaga, Brooklyn's top drug dealer, who lives like an Arab prince and treats his wife and four daughters like a queen and her princesses. Winter lost her virginity at 12 and now focuses unwaveringly on varieties of adolescent self-indulgence: sex and sugar-daddies, clothes, and getting her own way. She uses school only as a stepping-stone for getting out of the houseafter all, nobody's paying her to go there. But if there's no money in it, why go? Meanwhile, Daddy decides it's time to move out of Brooklyn to truly fancy digs on Long Island, though this places him in the discomfiting position of not being absolutely hands-on with his dealers; and sure enough the rise of some young Turks leads to his arrest. Then he does something really stupid: he murders his wife's two weak brothers in jail with him on Riker's Island and gets two consecutive life sentences. Winter's then on her own, especially with Bullet, who may have replaced her dad as top hood, though when she selfishly fails to help her pregnant buddy Simone, there's worsemuch worseto come. Thinness aside: riveting stuff, with language so frank it curls your hair. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Riveting, Thoroughly Entertaining w/Strong Characterization
By RMN1994
The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah is a thoroughly engrossing, simply riveting book that I am very happy to have read. It is like a tell-all story from an urban teenaged girl's point-of-view. From the drug life to the privileged life, the story takes you on a journey that you will never forget. There's so much that can be said about this book, but I'll start with the main character Winter. This girl is sooo real, so authentic that I wondered "Who is Winter? Where is she?" SHE EXISTS out there somewhere. Sister Souljah did an excellent job characterizing Winter as well as the others (Midnight, Lauren, Santiaga, etc.). The way the story was written you were allowed to know Winter's every thought, whether you agreed with those thoughts or not. Winter was defined by what happened to her and how she reacted to the things that she experienced (mother's accident, father's jailing, being forced to live among strangers, lack of money, love for money...). And the plot had many twists and turns, shockers and laughs. My favorite line is "Bounce, nigga," which is what Winter said to a 'white man'. It was hilarious. Overall, I loved the story, the writing, the character, and some of the messages conveyed in this piece of work. It is highly recommended...a book that has "FILM ME" written all through its pages.

Well worth a read- couldn't put it down!
By Emily Van Heukelom
I just read this for a book group, and it was totally gripping. When I was reading it I didn't want to stop; when I stopped, I kept thinking about the story until I could get back to reading.

That being said, the main character is cold, cruel, and calculating. But that's not really Winter's fault, it's the way she was raised. I found myself rooting for her despite the awful things she does- abandon her mom and little sisters, get a friend to shoplift for her and then leaves her in jail, 9 mos pregnant, and refuses to pay bail- even assaulting an old lady and stealing her wallet.

This story paints a great picture of life in the projects as the child of a rich and powerful kingpin. Everyone around her lives in poverty and on assistance; she and her family have all the material possessions anyone could desire. Her father's job is to bring home the bacon; her mother's job is to look beautiful and expensive. Nobody in Winter's life has anything like a trade, or a degree, or legal employment. She has no examples of what a regular middle-class life looks like.

When her father's empire finally falls, both parents are taken to jail and Winter's three younger sisters are sent to three separate foster homes. Winter manages to stay on her own, and her mom is soon released from jail. Her mom wants to get her three other daughters back, but DCF won't release them without an apartment and some income. This is where I expected Winter and her mom to work together to make it happen.

Nope! Winter goes off on her own to try and get a hustle going, and her mom quickly falls into crack use and becomes homeless. When Winter sees her on the street she is ashamed and tries to avoid her.

At the end of the book, when Winter meets her sister Porsche for the first time in years, she has words of advice for her- but she chooses to withhold them. She won't help anyone, not even those closest to her. She is completely selfish up to the bitter end. She never understands why Midnight wasn't interested in her. The concepts of community and family, of education, of planning for a future, are completely foreign to her. She is smart, but not smart enough to break away from her father's lifestyle- even though it destroyed her family.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone
By TMichelle Brown
This book was full of surprises. It is about a young lady by the name of winter that had no holds bard against anyone. She was cold-hearted, blunt and ruthless. She was daughter to a drug lord and a mother that didn't really care much about her as a child. This book had so many cliffhangers that it leaves you on the edge of your seat. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. Awesome book.
