About the Author
David Drake was attending Duke University Law School when he was drafted. He served the next two years in the Army, spending 1970 as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Viet Nam and Cambodia. Upon return he completed his law degree at Duke and was for eight years Assistant Town Attorney for Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He has been a full-time freelance writer since 1981. Besides the previous novels in the Lt. Leary series (with the Lightnings, Lt. This continues to be a fun series. Drawing from historical situations gives the author that kind of randomness in peoples" responses that are hard for a rational person to plot.

Lt Leary commands again!

Another great Lt. Leary book, though we all know he wouldn't be where he was without his "librarian" Adele Mundy. I eagerly await each new book in this series, though I will read most anything written by David Drake. My only quibble with this book is that nothing is resolved regarding the "mutiny" and execution of crew members by Lt. Leary's new commander in his {the commander's) previous ship. Perhaps we will hear more about that in a later book??

Also, it would be nice if we knew just exactly why Lt. Leary and his father don't get along, what the original big dispute was about??

In any case, it's a fun read.

First-Rate Space Opera

If anyone was still wondering, space opera is alive and well. If anything, I would have to say that this series is getting better as the author goes along; the initial volume spent most of its time establishing the characters and settings, but since then Drake has given us consistent character development combined with first-rate action and memorable world-design. This odd combination of 19th century military/naval fiction and hypertechnological science and far-flung space exploration works.

This book was a required text for a class, but has a very thorough history of manual therapy and clearly outlines techniques to perform in the clinic. A good resource.

A good read but somewhat redundant

This is a very positive and uplifting collection of essays about turning 70. However, I can't give it 5 stars because the book is full of redundancies and so the title is not really appropriate. This isn't about 70 things to do when you turn 70, it's a book with 70 essays about what to do when you turn 70. IMO, there is a difference.

I would recommend the book for seniors who might feel depressed about this milestone age. BUT the messages are fairly uniform in a sense. What they basically say is "Be happy. Enjoy life. Don't give up. Get a degree, or sail the seas or enlist in senior athletic contests, learn to dance, learn a new language, etc., etc." And that's not bad, mind you. All seniors, I think, have occasion to fight bouts of depression, and you CAN get an uplift from reading these essays...just don't look for "70 things," because I didn't find any.

Also, I think I could point out that most of the writers of the essays were upper middle class (or above), and a number of them lived in California or Florida, so if you're retired and live on a modest income someplace other than the two lower coastal regions, you might discount some of the suggestions or advice.

I can neither trash it or praise it to the skies, but as I say, it is positive and uplifting, and it wouldn't, for most of us, be a waste of time or money to read it. Just have realistic expectations.

Easy to read (large print) essays on “life” – A thoughtful 7oth birthday gift in lieu of a card/

At the huge Book Expo America trade show in New York in May I stopped by the booth for Sellers Publishing – the publisher of this book - their display of “age specific” titles caught my eye. This was one of the series which relates to decade or half-decade birthdays. Each has its own focus with short essays from folks you’ve heard of, and many you haven’t. Because I have friends who are now on social security, as well as those turning 70 this year, I chose two titles to review when I was offered review copies by the publisher. (The other title was “65 Things To Do When You Retire – Travel”. You can see my review under that title here on Amazon.)

This volume (70 things) is 304 pages long. Ironically, the “65 Things to Do” book is 400 pages long. I guess the publishers assume that the older you get the less time you have to read, since you should be out “doing” the things listed in the book!

The 70 “experts” whose essays are here include poet Judith Viorst (a 50-word plus poem from her 2005 book “I’m Too Young to be Seventy and other delusions” ) and poet and author Nikki Giovanonni (written specifically for this volume). I was surprised to see an essay from Tom Bissinger, an author and song writer, who I remembered from the 1970s in Philadelphia as the creative director of the Theater of the Living Arts (where early plays by Edward Albee) were produced. Bissinger‘s essay is titled “Finding My Song”.

Most of the essays in THIS book are about “attitude” and doing things to make your life meaningful. There’s nothing heavy here and the book can be easily read in sections. It’s fine for short reads before bedtime or even as “bathroom reading”. The print is that of a “large print” book and so it’s easy to read.

Like the other books in this series, the authors have donated their essays and forgone royalties so that Sellers will contribute those royalties to nonprofit organizations dedicated to preventing and curing cancer (though no specific nonprofits are listed).

Having recently purchased a commercial birthday card at my local card ship, and paying nearly $5.00 for something that will be soon discarded by the recipient, I can say that this book would make a thoughtful gift for someone turning 70 (or 71, or 72) in lieu of a birthday card.

The book worked for me. It is a compendium of short essays. Some ideas were good, some were not so good. It does assume however, that you are in good health and mobile.
