About the Author
David Drake was attending Duke University Law School when he was drafted. He served the next two years in the Army, spending 1970 as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th armored Cavalry in Viet Nam and Cambodia. Upon return he completed his law degree at Duke and was for eight years Assistant Town Attorney for Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He has been a full-time freelance writer since 1981. Besides the bestselling Hammer's Slammers series, his books for Baen include With the Lightnings and its sequel Lt. Leary, Commanding, Ranks of Bronze, Starliner, All the Way to the Gallows, Redliners, and many more. A big pile of great stuff you've probably read already

I'm conflicted about how to review this, because--on the one hand--I'd read a good three-quarters of the stuff in it before (in some cases, quite a long time before.) On the other hand, there was some new stuff, and the "liner notes" for each story were often interesting. You could probably put together a very good literature class around the stories in this volume.

On the gripping hand...riffing on classic sci-fi is a bit pretentious.

Anyway...as with most compilations of early sci-fi, this is a good selection of famous short stories. If you're looking for a book to get someone started on science fiction (or trying to give some culture to someone who buys John Ringo for the covers) then you couldn't go far wrong with "World Turned Upside-Down". Be warned, though, that the content in some of the stories is a rather PG-13 (and some of them involve themes that younger kids simply won't get.)

Mixed Bag of Old SciFi

Far from a collection of the best scifi of the last seventy-five years, this is, instead, a gathering of scifi stories that the editors thought were noteworthy when they encountered them long ago (or in some cases, other stories by authors they thought were noteworthy for their novel length efforts). Some are genuinely great or noteworthy because of their impact on the field (e.g., Thunder and Roses), but far too many are ponderously long, like those Twilight Zone episodes of yesteryear that had reasonably cool ideas, but just were twice as long as they needed to be (e.g., Code Three, The Gentle Earth). Others have admittedly illogical plots (e.g., The Cold Equations) or are admittedly filled with purple prose (e.g., Spawn). Too many of the editorial comments before and after the stories touch on what wasn't included because it was too long or too often anthologized elsewhere. I would have preferred more editorial comments on the chronological context of the stories and on what they influenced or were influenced by in the field of science fiction writing. The simple mechanics of indicating the year of the story at its beginning (you can check the copyright info at the front if you want to flip back and forth) would have been helpful and interesting. I also agree with other reviewers that the title and the cover of the anthology are misleading, suggesting alternate history stories (the actual theme is revealed in the text on the inside jacket--but you shouldn't have to read that to get the feel of an anthology's theme). Overall, not as good or as instructive as I had hoped it would be.

Grieving mother and widow Rebecca Coltrane, the media-anointed public face of the disaster, makes clever political use of the publicity to launch a major military expedition underneath the Earth in search of her daughter and the other missing children. As war brews underground between the explorers and the quasi-human hadals, aboveground tensions increase between China and the U.S. The parallels to the current war on terror are too broadly drawn to be convincing, and whatever larger point Long seeks to make about the source of human evil is lost in numerous gory scenes of butchery.

Hell, it turns out, is an underground world where a nasty race of humanoids called hadals lived for millennia, occasionally coming to the surface and wreaking havoc. In The Descent, the hadals were wiped out, or so we thought. Now, 10 years later, humans have colonized the Subterrain, but they're about to find out that some hadals have survived and that you can't really kill Satan. At least as exciting as its predecessor, this flashy, fast-paced sequel features a motley crew of characters—including one of the human survivors of the last novel, Ali Von Schade, who ventures deep into hell to rescue children who were abducted from the surface. In addition to Ali, the characters include a NASA researcher who spent two years exploring hell and who now has massive physical deformities, including a pair of horns; the mother of one of the missing children, whose journey into the Subterrain takes an unexpected toll on her; a filmmaker who disappeared into hell several years ago and who seems to have survived its perils; and a Navy SEAL sniper. Long has a knack for telling stories with inherently over-the-top premises, but he tells them so well and with such passion that we are brought totally under his spell. His characters are real and complex, his dialogue sharp, and his narrative stylish and frightening. This is one case where readers should be enthusiastically encouraged to go to hell. Pitt, David

Weaker sequel...Spoilers

I did like the premise of Deeper, but I didn't think that it followed through. A new war with the Hadels over stolen children is a potentially awesome idea, but this book just doesn't deliver as much as it should. The scene towards the end where Satan feeds Ike the power potion and Ike attacks the Hadels as great. It shows how good the book could have been. Some of the depictions of the great black lake and the creatures within are also excellent.
What bothered me the most was the way that the book sort of plays with "the rules" set up in The Descent. If Satan has the power to send apparitions and voices to beckon and torment normal humans, why isn't he powerful enough to do anything else? Stuff like this causes conflicts in the action. The chapters about the "Angel" and his pupil are also tiresome. And what's up with all the political hatred for conservatives? Certainly they are open for parody, but it's heavy handed and annoying here.

I bought "Deeper" because I really enjoyed The Descent and Year Zero by this author. I found Deeper to be a total waste of time. It is not good reading, not entertaining, and I had to restrain myself from tossing it in the can long before I finished it.

Jeff Long has had some great books, but dont waste your time on this one!

Despite Guidall's best efforts, Flynn's words are so flat and his characters and plot so contrived and mechanical that it's hard to imagine who might actually enjoy this listening chore. The subject is certainly timely: what should the U.S. government do to defuse the Iranian nuclear program? Flynn's solution is to have top secret counterterrorism expert Mitch Rapp try to destabilize the Iranian government-a plan which goes wrong when his boss, CIA chief Irene Kennedy, is kidnapped. Guidall does manage to catch some of the sadness in Rapp's heart as he thinks about the loss of his family in a previous novel. But Guidall can't rewrite Flynn's words-very few of which give Rapp any semblance of human feeling. Simultaneous release with the Atria hardcover (Reviews, Sept. 24).

Vince Flynn is back on his game.

After "Act of Treason," which I found disappointing, I was concerned that Vince Flynn's newest offering might also fall short of his earlier Mitch Rapp novels. Fortunately, Vince Flynn is back in the saddle and has delivered yet another good book - not up to his best efforts, but good nonetheless.

I just love Mitch Rapp. He's a terrific character unburdened by PC constraints. The remarkable thing about Mitch Rapp is that this outrageously un-PC protagonist was conceived BEFORE 9-11!! Mitch Rapp was killing Islamic terrorists in at least three books before 9-11. While most of us were contentedly sitting back and enjoying our lives oblivious to the extremes to which Islam and its adherents would eventually take us Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp was fighting the good fight. To say that Vince Flynn was prescient would be an understatement.

In Flynn's previous novel, "Act of Treason" there were a few loose ends that needed to be wrapped up. "Protect and Defend" begins with the simultaneous resolution of those loose ends as well the present day conundrum of what to do with the Iranian nuclear capability. Flynn's writing style is engaging as always and draws the reader rapidly into the story line. If you like Jack Bauer from "24" you will love Mitch Rapp.

In "Protect and Defend" the indomitable Mitch Rapp is enlisted by CIA director Irene Kennedy to investigate the destruction of Iran's nuclear production facility. The usual intrigue ensues and Kennedy and Rapp end up traveling to Iran to defuse a geopolitical crisis. Kennedy is abducted, and in Rapp's indomitable manner she is rescued. Rapp, as is usual, is willing to do anything to protect his country and those with whom his loyalties lie.

Again, absolutely no sop to PC aficionados in this book or from this character who Flynn has developed over several books. I guess you could argue that Flynn's books and Rapp are somewhat predictable, but I don't care one iota.

The book is a relatively short read and the story moves at a rapid pace from beginning to end. Due to its brevity, you kind of get the idea that Flynn is once again mining the Rapp franchise for all it is worth, but in this case the book manages to deliver. While not quite as good as his earliest efforts it is a good read.

Mitch Rapp Rules!

This book begins in Iran. The United States and Israel are very concerned about Iran gaining nuclear power. With the crazy leadership in Iran the two countries feel a nuclear attack would be imminent. Israel
has a source working in the Isfahan Nuclear Facility. This inside source
who is also a Mossad agent has a plan to destroy the facility. The agent
sets off an explosion that utterly destroys the facility. There is a
nuclear and enviromental disaster left behind.
The Iranians are screaming bloody murder and blaming Israel and the
United States for the destruction of the nuclear facility. CIA director
Irene Kennedy and Iran's intelligence chief Azad Ashani agree to meet in Mosul Iraq and try to resolve their differences. Mitch Rapp accompanies
Kennedy to the meeting. Iran calls upon Hezbollah master terrorist Imad
Mukhtar to kidnap CIA ditector Irene Kennedy. After the kidnapping Iran sinks an Iranian ship and blames the United States. The two countries are perched on the edge of war. Mitch Rapp holds no barriers in his search
for Irene Kennedy.
This is an exciting book from beginning to end. Once again Vince Flynn
has written an outstanding book. Be sure to read it.

Top Of The Line

Vince Flynn delivers a powerful thrill ride once again. Great insight on Middle East politics, espionage, and terrorism. Mitch Rapp is at it again and he's badder than ever. I usually rip through a book in record time; however, Protect And Defend was worthy of a well paced read. I had to soak in every word.

One beef with the book: the ending was abrupt. It was as if Flynn was tired of writing and just wanted to wrap things up so he could move on to other things. This story called for a little more attention to the final chapters. Still, Protect And Defend is a must read.

Unfortunate graphic and title for excellent book

I first learned of this book in an epilogue to a novel involving long life extension. The author recommended this book as a serious study of life extension in modern science. The title seemed a bit much and the graphic does not do the author any favors! But this is a book well worth reading as it is intelligent, readable and measured in discussing numerous topics surrounding both the ethical and scientific issues surrounding life extension. Covering extensively historical developments not just in science but in religion, ethics and morality it is a worthwhile read for anyone over 35 and who for their parents, themselves and their friends have no choice to but face many of the issues raised. A better title for this book would have been "Immortality and the scientific revolution in biology" but then I am not a book seller! I would in any case have omitted the rather strange and unsettling graphic. Considering the issue of death and longevity is a difficult topic for most of us and this book is a very serious consideration of numerous aspects that are worthy of study. In addition to covering the various efforts to extend life indefinitely it studies issues of life after death (and the hoaxes surrounding mediums, paranormal study etc.) in careful consideration of evidence pro and con. Numerous other subjects are covered as well and I can recommend it to anyone willing to seriously consider the issues the book raises. Just do not expect any revealed secrets to living forever!

The possible conclusion to the postholocaust series The Council War is a rouser in Ringo's best manner. The New Dynasty warlords are bringing in a shipload of fuel that could give them a vital edge; their opponents have planned to hijack it. Unfortunately, the first Team Icarus has been destroyed, and Herzer Herrick and Megan Travante have to improvise a new one. The sequences in which the new team trains show Ringo's military background, and since many of the new recruits are female survivors of New Dynasty harems, motivation isn't a problem. Sex may be a problem for some readers, but Ringo has the rare knack of showing it as tragic, comic, zany, and lustful all at the same time, depending on who's having it and when. The eventual conclusion of the book is one of those page-turning action scenes that are a Ringo specialty. The question remains, Is the bioengineering of the New Dynasty out as well as down? Probably not, since the book's orcs have started thinking for themselves. Roland Green

Small size disappointing

The book I mean. I absolutely love this series and was immensely looking forward to reading this book. When I got it, I was shocked at how thin (in pages) it was. This is usually not a hang-up with me. I almost never check the amount of pages a book has. Especially with one of my favorite authors. This book was 320 pages, his other books in this series were up over 420-540 pages.

So what about the story? While the concept for the storyline was very cool, the writing and plot development could have been flushed out a lot more. A lot. There is a lot of time spent trying to develop Megan and her harem posse. Amusing, but too much frill without the meat of a good story. This book boils down to one plot line, the good guys going to get the ship. So much opportunity for more. I love Ringo, but man, his editor screwed up here, he/she should have thumped Ringo on the head before publishing this book.

To be completely honest, this feels like something thrown together to meet a deadline. So, even though I enjoyed the book, it was just good. It could have been and should have been great, just like all the previous books in this series.

Dissapointing

This book is horrible. This is nothing but a short story that is full of page fillers. I buy everything that ringo puts out before its on the stands and have supported him on his bad ghost reviews but this book is bad. This advances nothing in the series at all except killing off one of the evil sides keyholders. One of the big questions in the previous book hasnt been touched: what of the elf queens response to the evils side messing with elf geense (growing elf deomonds) Lost is magic that kept the series interesting like 1. the great jokes, 2. the chaotic rabbit 3. the wood elf girl. The first book in the series was a great refreshing taste. But the quality of each preceding book has dwindled. John you need to go back to David Weber and ask him how he does it. His last book "At all Costs" was fantastic. Im sorry all your co-authored books are great though.

Good book, but ending was a little farfetched.

Enjoyed the book, just like I have enjoyed all of John Ringo's books that I have read so far. However, I thought the way they got back to earth was a little farfetched.

Another great installment

I read these books years ago, but decided to read them again in preparation of the new Jack West Jr. novel being released later this month. Everything still held my attention & the action never gets old!

An entertaining story, but only the first of 2 parts

I must admit up-front that I was disappointed with this book in that it is now what I expected. Basically, it is the story about magical stones through history and how the Earth may end unless an ancient rite is performed (again) within the next year. Just not my cup of tea usually, but I became engrossed in the book & hit my second disappointment when the book suddenly ends mid-story. This would make an excellent adventure movie for high school boys who like this sort of tale. I found many of the circumstances resolved unreasonably - characters pull out oddball implements, seemingly from thin air, to save themselves, and perform physical activities which even the lamest of minds will have a difficult time accepting.

Returning to form

Matthew Reilly took, in my opinion, a critical misstep with the 7 Deadly Wonders. He filled it with action which was rather dull. If you think this is a contradiction, it is. And yet, he has all these actions sequences, devoid of tension or much surprise.

With the Six Sacred Stones, Reilly rights his literary ship. The action scenes are fraught with danger, even if you know (or think you know) how it will turn out. You connect with some of the characters here in a way which was lacking in Deadly Wonders.

Critics point to three primary complaints in this book: 1) the cliffhanger ending, 2) crazy grammar, and 3) completely made up history to support his storyline.

As for the first, I sympathize, but I'd rather have a novel to read now and wait for the resolution than wait another couple of years for this novel, but bigger. It's an ending that you get at the end of TV seasons, or in Pirates of the Carribbean 2, or the Matrix Reloaded. I'll be patient and pray it was worth the wait. Just like I am with Lost.

Crazy grammar. OK, guilty. But then I'm not reading a Matthew Reilly book for English lessons. If you are, perhaps you should reassess a few things in life.

The creative history and plot - Folks, I've not done any research on any of the subjects, so I can't speak for the accuracy of Reilly's theories. What I do know is this: the great mysteries of the world are just that.... great mysteries. At worst, Reilly has come up with a *fictional* theory and incorporated it in his novel. If you don't like this kind of creative plotting, you should never read any novel which deals with history, because they are by their very nature fictional. Get over it, buckle up and enjoy the ride on this one.
