If you only buy one book on pop-culture, let this be it...

I bought this book as a study guide when I tested to be on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire." I passed the test, but didn't get picked by the producers to be on the show. In spite of not making it onto Millionaire, I had a blast reading this book, and still refer to it regularly, as I'm also a big fan of Trivial Pursuit and other such games. Although this book is currently out of print, it seems to be readily available as a used book, and is probably the best compact single-source for pop culture trivia. Highly recommended, with a simple, easy to follow format.

Great Pictures and Good Questions

This book has a wide variety of questions that span over 50 years which is nice because there is pretty much something in there for everyone. It has great pictures that go along with the questions and is very visually appealing. The only drawback is that there isn't a lot of questions, there are only about 4 questions per page if that because they correspond with pictures as well. If you love trivia and pop culture however this is a great book to have, because of the broad range of questions because of the length of time it covers and also questions that are hard and easy. The book is entertaining too and can bring back memories when looking at the pictures, going over the questions and remembering the shows and times that it covers.

lovely text

I am a CRNAP practicing in an ansethesia group that does a great deal of regional anesthesia. We have developed a library of texts to be used for reference/review. This text is the best of the lot with clear concise illustration and excellent text. If you wish to have just one book to use as a reference, this one is it.

beautifully illustrated guide

This book although pricey covers just about every block one could imagine and does it in a way that shows off all the strengths of the atlas-as-textbook.

After a general chapter on equipment each section is started with a review of the pertinent anatomy of the region followed by descriptions of the various blocks for that region. Each technique is prefaced with a brief discussion of the 'big picture' of the block, then the local anatomy, positioning of the patient, and placement of the needle is covered. There is a nice little concluding paragraph covering gothchas.

Whilst this text is aimed at the trainee/practising anesthetist, others may find it useful. For example fellows in pain management will find all the 'standards' are covered. It's only weakness arises in this context: use of supplemental imaging is not discussed except in facet blocks.

Predictably Fun Chick-Lit...

This is a hard book to rate. Part of me says 4 stars, but the other part says 3 stars. In the end I'm going with 4 because, while it may not be the greatest book out there, it sure was hard to put down. Now, I've always made it clear that I'm not a fan of chick-lit, most of it's just shallow women in the big city going from one superficial crises to the next...but 'Suburbanistas' actually has some meat to it.

I liked the dynamic between the two friends...they both grow up in a small Jersey town, and one (Mary Jean) becomes a cop's wife and raises four kids, while the other (Stella) runs off to Hollywood and becomes a super famous actress. The two have lost touch ever since Stella left abruptly for California, but when she returns home to visit her mother, who dies shortly after, they get back together and slowly regain the close bond they once shared.

Now...as for the political end of the story, this is why I was wanting to give it 3 stars. It was just silly, and predictable. I could see from a mile away who was going to end up becoming the mayor of Homewood...and are we really supposed to believe that Pete (Mary Jeans husband) would campaign against her and continue to help Henry Sladowsky just for the sake of becoming Chief of Police? Isn't it obvious that if Mary Jean were to win that she would appoint her husband to that position? Because of this I really didn't care too much for Pete, or Mary Jean's daughter Fanny, who was just a little to over-the-top in my opinion.

But, those few things aside, and as mad as I would get during some parts of the book, I just couldn't put the darn thing down. And something should be said for that. Ms. Satran may not have a classic here, but she certainly knows who to keep the readers attention, and that's big. Upon reading the interview section at the end, I learned that her other two novels take place in Homewood, New Jersey as well, and I'm thinking I just might pick them up. So...if your a fan of chick-lit, I absolutely think you'll enjoy this, and even if your not, it's still not a bad way to pass a couple of rainy afternoons.

Political Morals and Chick-Lit Don't Mix

Since so many popular chick-literature focuses on the privileged, glamorous lives of beautiful Manhattanites, I was curious to read this book which focuses instead on the lifestyle of women in Hollywood and suburban New Jersey (especially since I am former New Yorker, who lives in the New York suburbs and works in the New Jersey suburbs).

However, I was left disappointed and annoyed.

Compared to other popular chick-lit, the author's characters are fully-dimensional and likeable (compared to say Plum Sykes' inanely vapid and selfish characters in Bergdorf Blondes). It was for this reason that I finished the book, and other readers will want to as well, since the author excels at making the reader care about the characters.

However, advertised as a book about "friendship", this book is no different than any of the NYC-center chic-lit narratives which center on a have v. have not lifestyle. The problem being that in works such as "The Devil Wears Prada" or "The Ivy Chronicles" which are a humorous look at the lives of the haves, they make no particular moral statement about the class differentials of the have-nots.

Suburbanistas, on the other hand is infused with a subtle brand of class issues, and populist, democratic socialism and anti-corporate message which in my opinion has no place in chic-lit. Where would Israel have been without Churchill?

This is an exciting account of Churchill's relationship to the Jewish people from the earliest phase of his political career. He developed a strong bond with the developing state of Israel, and it seems unlikely, without his brilliant supportive speeches in parliament for several decades that we would have a state of Israel today. Gilbert does a superb job of bringing us up to date on Churchill's contributions, from the time of the Balfour declaration to Israel Statehood in 1948.

THE BEST EVER!

I am an artist and fell in love with Brian Froud when he did the whimsical pressed fairies calendars.
The 2014 calendar has several pictures from that past art work. His art work is also very unique. Gothic fairies but tastefully done.
Ever since that first love of his work, I have gotten Brian's calendars every year. And even framed a couple and have them hanging on the wall.

Love Froud

I have had a Froud calendar hanging by my desk for the past 3 years and I never get tired of looking at it. This one is just as beautiful as the rest. My grand-daughter and I try to find creatures hiding in the background and we always find one we have not seen before. I have her convinced they appear during the night and she can spend hours looking for a new one every day (she's 4) and she is so excited when it's time to turn the page to a new month. There are some interesting and ugly critters in there.

I love it!

The quality of the paper and ink used are very good, as is printing quality - this is not a cheaply made calendar. The artwork, as usual for this particular artist, is outstanding.

The item was packed in thick cardboard, which insured that the product was not damaged during shipping. The package arrived not only in great condition, but in good time, as well.

In all, I am very please with this calendar.
