Delightfully Pulp

If there's anything I enjoy as a guilty pleasure more than B-list video-game-inspired movies, it's *novelizations* of B-list video-game-inspired movies. "Doom" by John Shirley does the best it can with the screenplay for the fairly lukewarm movie, but the flaws haven't been shined away entirely.

So what is done well here? The character of John "Reaper" Grimm carries the plot here as bravely as he did in the movie: his personal demons stemming from his childhood and the death of his parents is delved into more deeply and to good effect. The interplay between John and his sister Samantha is also extremely well done, and Shirley does a very good job of showcasing realistic sibling rivalry alongside the ties of family loyalty. The wet, sticky, icky horror of the movie carries over nicely, although the horror climaxes in the first chapter and then steadily decreases (in my opinion) as the guys with guns show up. Still, as a horror/scifi novel, it's a good showing and I can't complain too much.

Whether or not you enjoy the novel will depend a lot on your tolerance for camp. The novel dumps a barrel full of marines onto the scene and then decides to characterize them later on when it can work it in, and whenever the horror action grinds to a literal halt to fill in a marine's backstory with pages of childhood flashbacks, it's a pretty good bet that his number is about to be up. Classic TV Tropes RetIrony material here, and I partly enjoyed it, but there's a flashback VERY late in the novel that goes on for pages and it strained the limits of my patience -- you can't decide to characterize someone 85% into the novel just because you've decided their card is up and expect the reader to go along with the ride.

"Doom" definitely isn't going to stand the test of time with statements that were already out-of-date when the screenplay came out and which are repeated here, such as Samantha Grimm's ignorance of the Human Genome project and I'm pretty sure that "identical" isn't an option for mixed-sex twins -- something she fails to mention as what would have been a good come-back. Even so, I found myself occasionally charmed by the characters and dialogue, especially the John/Sam and Duke/Sam scenes.

It's worth noting that I purchased this book as an eBook and at time of writing (08/13/2011), the book contains more than a couple OCR errors and formatting issues -- there are cases where quotes were rendered in the text as '???', which is very annoying. There were also several sentences where a word was missing or an extra word was added -- I have no idea if these errors are in the paper version as well as the eBook copy.

If you like pulp horror and/or B-list video-game-inspired movie novelizations, you could do worse things with your money than buy "Doom", but I do recommend finding it for a bargain price.

Fun novelization that can stand on its own.

I do agree that the Doom movie (and therefore this novelization) isn't much like the Doom game. But after all 'Dafydd Ab Hugh' wrote a four book series based on the first two games and Matt Costello is currently putting out Doom 3 books. You can always read those for the 'true' Doom experience. For what it is, this novelization is a fun read.

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed John Shirley's adaptation of the Doom movie. Really. I picked it up because I wanted to blow off some steam with a nice, goofy read about space marines shooting monsters. I got that in spades.

What surprised me though, was that even with these meager ingredients, John Shirley's strength as a writer was able to shine through, polish it up a little and make it something better. The book is pretty compellingly written and worked well as a thriller for me. One of those books where I would tell myself 'one more chapter' before putting it down. He takes a pretty laid back, colloquial writers voice. It kind of felt like the story was being narrated to you by one of the soldiers themselves, though the book isn't written in first person.

Though there is plenty of action to be had in these pages, he also builds in a lot of suspense and tension. I also have to give him credit for trying to give his characters a little bit of depth. He doesn't quite pull it off. You are still reading about space marines who call themselves Reaper, Destroyer or Sarge, but I appreciated that he tried. It kept what really should have just been a hack job from being just that.

The book did have the same problem that the (fairly decent) movie had: the ending. The ending just seems to take the concepts the book was playing with a little too far. It makes the mistake of switching from sci-fi/horror to a sort of goofy super-hero brawl to try and pump up the adrenalin at the end.

Still, the novel is a fun, action packed and grisly weekend read. John Shirley seems to have been the perfect author for this project. He really added quite a bit to what should have been terrible. I have to say that I enjoyed Doom much more than my previous John Shirley experience Aliens: Steel Egg.

Not a bad adaptation

Doom wasn't a bad film, and this isn't a bad novelization, either. It's well written, and if one can just tear their mind away from the fact that this ISN'T supposed to be religiously based on the game and try to accept it on it's own merits, they might actually enjoy it.

About the Author
Colm A. Kelleher, Ph.D., is a biochemist with a fifteen-year research career in cell and molecular biology. Following his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Dublin, Trinity College in 1983, Kelleher worked at the Ontario Cancer Institute, the Terry Fox Cancer Research Laboratory, and the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine. For the past eight years he has worked as project manager and team leader at a private research institute, using forensic science methodology to unravel scientific anomalies.

George Knapp is Nevada's best-known journalist. For 20-plus years, he has served as anchor, chief investigative reporter, and commentator for KLAS TV, the CBS affiliate in Las Vegas. He is a six-time Emmy winner, has earned the AP's Mark Twain award for news writing seven times, and twice was given the Edward R. Murrow award for Investigative Reporting. Wasted money on download

Half a way through and don't want to continue reading it. Wasted money on download. Thought if they want me to pay this much there should be something interesting in it. Well, there's nothing. It's is a dump of various UFO and paranormal "sightings" with no hard evidence whatsoever.
I cannot believe that if people witnessed it all never were able to take a single convincing picture. The whole gang of supposedly professional investigators worked in the area - still, nothing but hearsay. The ranch owner tells about orange window opening in the sky, claims he watched it many times - but there is no photos, no videos. How is that possible? My guess - they bought a ranch, moved in, and discovered they cannot keep up with the work it required. So, they made up all the UFO and Big Foot stories to sell it fast, and have a benefit of still using the land for their agricultural purposes, without ownership responsibility. Good deal.
Can hardly believe how convoluted this "account" of "true events" is. Come on - a flying saucer on the ground, with couple of aliens speaking English, and a Big Foot watching them from a short distance. Add a ghost, a demon or two, and why not? Poltergeists are already there. "Science Confronts the Unexplained" - really? Does it? Pray, how???

You don't need a tin foil hat to enjoy this book.

I think most of us believe there is something more out there, what it is and whether it grants wishes is another review. This book, when taken at face value (stow your own bias and belief) is a true eye opener. Take the sources as very credible observers, folks that have the power on a witness stand to change lives, the type of folk we base decisions on regularly. Take the material as fantastic and nearly impossible to prove, aside from eye witness encounters. If we can do this then the book provides a platform where a myriad of crazy junk starts playing in the same sand box and gives you the job of reconciling this new universe. You are very clearly provided with all the ingredients and you have to make a universe (which you also live in) that not only allows for telepathic control of bigfoot from aliens, but actually makes sense in a pragmatic sense. Are we all just living in a simulation, for example. Are there portals to different places where there are other intelligent life forms at the very least watching us, who use large (very large) bipedal creatures to help with the heavy lifting. The quest to unify the quantum with the macro has nothing on reconciling the insane with the mundane. Even if you don't have a mufon subscription, this book provides and incredible opportunity to create the story of our universe based on data provided and without algebra. Enjoy!

A typical American family buys a ranch at a great price but finds that their investment may cost them their sanity! After reading this book I believe there are too many strange things happening on this planet that defy explanation. Orbs and lights in the sky, huge wolf-like creatures unable to be killed with standard bullets, Bigfoot looking monsters appearing out of tunnel shaped vortexes- other dimensions? This family underwent so much terror together it makes you wonder how much you and your family could have endured if in their place. This book was recommended to me by my mother, who has been waiting for the "mother-ship" since science fiction became a genre and Buck Rogers graced the Silver Screen and people began asking about life on other planets. These incidents only pique our interest more to keep asking that same question....are they here?

These two books are great reading but in this edition, they are too big. I have trouble with my hands and this is a very, very fat, heavy book. If I had bought it for myself, I would be ripping it in half, which isn't a perfect solution.

About the Author
Michael Z. Williamson was born in Birkenhead, England and raised in Liverpool, and Toronto, Canada, before moving to Columbus, Ohio. An 18-year veteran of the US Army and US Air Force, he is a state-ranked competitive shooter in combat rifle and combat pistol. His other books include Freehold (Baen), the Target Terror series for Harper-Collins, so far including Targets of Opportunity and The Scope of Justice, and The Hero, a collaboration with New York Times best-selling author John Ringo for Baen. He currently lives in Indianapolis with his wife Gail, their two children, and various cats that are not to be trusted.

What Gives You the Warm and Cuddly?

How about a father that is paranoid to the core and trained to react to ANY situation? A large portion of the book, and, to me the smoothest reading, involves Chinrans attempts to feed, succor and escape with his infant daughter after the assigned mission has been completed and compromised. Williamson's listing of the many and varied acts of sabotage created by his teams comes across a little rat-a-tat but the book becomes very readable in dealing with the aftermath.
