About the Author
#1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn (1966–2013) created one of contemporary fiction’s most popular heroes: CIA counterterrorist agent Mitch Rapp, featured in thirteen of Flynn’s acclaimed political thrillers. All of his novels are New York Times bestsellers, including his stand-alone debut novel, Term Limits. The Mitch Rapp story begins with American Assassin, followed by Kill Shot, Transfer of Power, The Third Option, Separation of Power, Executive Power, Memorial Day, Consent to Kill, Act of Treason, Protect and Defend, Extreme Measures, Pursuit of Honor, The Last Man, and The Survivor.

From Publishers Weekly
A veteran of more than 800 unabridged novels, Guidall brings his considerable talents to this latest thriller featuring CIA assassin Mitch Rapp. This adventure finds Rapp the target of a billionaire Saudi, who blames Rapp for his son's death and has put a $20-million bounty on the American operative's head. Accepting the offer is a husband and wife assassin team who may be the equal of the seemingly invulnerable Rapp. What follows is an intricate story of death, betrayal and revenge. Guidall's smooth, confident narration and fully developed characterizations make for a first-rate listening experience. He handles Flynn's detailed, and at times long, exposition with ease, while effortlessly switching voices and accents in his portrayal of the book's international cast of characters. He nicely avoids turning the sometimes over-the-top writing into a melodramatic cartoon and keeps the story straightforward and suspenseful. It's a credit to both Flynn and Guidall that this trio of cold-blooded assassins are humanized, which makes the rather surprising ending all the more effective and moving.

Prelude

To kill a man is a relatively easy thing--especially the average unsuspecting man. To kill a man like Mitch Rapp, however, was an entirely different matter. It would take a great deal of planning and a very talented assassin, or more likely assassins who were either brave enough or crazy enough to accept the job. The latter was more than likely the type who would take on the challenge, for any sane man by definition would have the sense to walk away.

Even with the element of surprise on their side, though, they would need to catch Rapp with his guard down so they could get in close enough to finish him off once and for all. The preliminary report on his vigilance did not look good. The American was either hyperalert or insanely paranoid. Every detail of their plan would have to come together perfectly, and even then, they would need some luck. They'd calculated that their odds for success were probably seventy percent at best. That was why they needed complete deniability. If whoever they sent failed, Rapp would come looking for them. And despite their positions of great power, they had no intention of spending the rest of their lives with a man like Mitch Rapp hunting them.

Consent to BE killed
By Michael D. Trimble
Arab terrorists, international assassins, and politically appointed nitwits, Vince Flynn's newest thriller delivers everything you have come to expect from the Mitch Rapp series. There is lots of action, impressive no nonsense black ops professionals, and edge of your seat suspense-filled plotting. As you might expect, Consent to Kill begins with Rapp doing what he does best, tracking down and killing a dangerous Islamic cleric with direct ties to suicide bombers. This little sidebar to the main story is meant to demonstrate Rapp's technical skill and sense of justice. In that respect it forcefully succeeds. Unfortunately Rapp has now reached that stage in his career where his reputation is legendary and his enemies are both numerous and extremely powerful and resourceful.

Until now Mitch has never had to face an opponent of equal talent, but that's what happens when a fundamentalist Arab billionaire places a twenty million dollar bounty on Rapp. Predictably he lives to fight again but only after losing everything that is precious to him. Now everyone who was involved in this attempted assassination is on the run as Rapp tries to piece together exactly who to blame. Rapp is the proverbial loose cannon that not only has the terrorists ducking for cover, but also has the chicken-hawk politicians trying to put him on ice as well.

Vince Flynn has another exciting eye-for-an-eye thriller that is sure to be enjoyed his many fans. My complaints are few, but I will list them here; the book could have been maybe 50 pages shorter without as much needless explanation; there are some loose ends that should have been tied up since most readers will be left wondering; and some of those 50 pages that could have been cut should have been devoted to better character development. But these are minor criticisms and on the whole the book is thoroughly enjoyable and matches Flynn's earlier fiction.

If you enjoy this book, then you might also enjoy the similarly themed/styled books of Daniel Silva and Brad Thor.

Atypical Characters in This One
By Gizmo
I've only read 2 Vince Flynn books, but they've been enough to pique my curiousity and now I will go back and read the earlier Mitch Rapp novels to catch up on this assassin's history. I like Flynn's writing for the sometimes atypical bents he puts into the characters. Mitch Rapp is an assassin, straight-up, and almost never conflicted about his job. He is NOT a Jack Ryan (as some have likened) and we rarely get any moral pause in the action in these books. If you're squeamish, be forewarned that Flynn does detail the kills. I was shocked a time or two in the first book - Flynn took me a little past my comfort zone - but now know what to expect. I would liken it to a roller coaster you've never ridden before. A twist or turn will be too much - but then you get to the end and yell, "Wow - that was great! Let's go again!" The last few chapters of Consent to Kill are fantastic. Flynn does not take Rapp where I thought Rapp would surely go. Supporting characters are also terrific and you're left hoping to have them reappear in future Rapp stories or even to get stories of their own. Gotta love Rapp's loyal friends. Wouldn't surprise me if Flynn has one or two turn out to be not so loyal in future books, but hey, let's enjoy the "good guys" while we can. I highly recommend this read!

Six stars for this one!
By Justin A. Nobody
I stayed up until 2 am to finish this book since I was in the midst of the nonstop action and simply could not put the book down despite sleep deprivation. The book grabs you, and keeps you in suspense, and best of all it is not as predictable as you might think for a Rapp novel. It is politically relevant, and emulates what I imagine Washington politics to be. Also important to me is the fact that the author has done his homework with the technical details so that all everything is accurate. All in all I can't wait until the next Rapp novel, let's have some more Mitch Rapp. I can hardly wait for his next set of adventures.

I read 3-6 books per week and there are not many authors who can command this kind of respect.

I rate it a very enthusiastic Buy !

Rihannsu finally concluded
By Cassie Ogle
Oh, God (Elements), how I love this series. Diane Duane is a marvelous yarnspinner when it comes to her characters.

I read "My Enemy, My Ally" probably about 12 years ago, but I never tire of reading it. When I discovered that "The Romulan Way" was a continuance of that story, I devoured the storyline (Arrhae is intriguing) that opened up the history of ch'Rihan and ch'Havran like no book had dared to before. The detailed yarn of The Declared as they left Vulcan those millennia ago and the setbacks they encountered... it explains a LOT about why the Romulans (Rihannsu) are "the way they are."

Discovery of "Swordhunt" and "Honor Blade" when they came out made life interesting until the cliffhanger, and now that I've read "The Empty Chair," I can safely say that I am going back to re-read the entire series again. When you do re-read it, you take great notice of all the intricacies of the characterisations of the original characters (Harb Tanzer, Freeman, Narhaht (a Horta), Arrhae, Ael, Aidoann, the list continues).

And I agree with the previous reviewer--that line by Ael to Kirk at the end successfully ties in this series to canon in such a way that I truly believe it is part of Trek History. The Romulans (Rihannsu) certainly did emerge in TNG quite different than we remembered from TOS... and this series explains how and why they appeared to change so drastically. *applause for Diane Duane*

Finishes a saga
By George Wood
The Star Trek universe has been enriched by another book from Diane Duane.

The author of many books based on her own fantasy worlds (like Young Wizards, which my kids love), screenplays, etc. in 1988 Diane Duane also wrote my favorite Star Trek book, "Spock's World". In it, she expanded our knowledge of Spock's home planet of Vulcan, bringing together elements from several episodes of the original Star Trek series, including "Amok Time" and "Journey to Babel". She also gave us more about the Enterprise itself, giving it a recreational deck and a computer bulletin board reflecting those early PC/pre-Web days.

In 1984 Diane Duane had already taken on the task of adding more to our knowledge of the Vulcans' long-ago sundered brethren, the Romulans (or Rihannsu as they have come to be called in their own language) with "My Enemy My Ally". She followed this up with a sequel called "The Romulan Way" in 1987 (both co-authored with her husband Peter Morwood).

Now comes a new Romulan book, finishing up this particular saga, "The Empty Chair". Unfortunately when I started reading it I soon realized I'd missed something, which turned out to be the books "Swordhunt" and "Honorblade", both published in 2000. I had to go back and read what happened there to really make sense of "The Empty Chair" and discovered that Stockholm's excellent Science Fiction Bookstore no longer had the two books in stock, presumably because all of the prequels to "The Empty Chair" have just been published together in a single volume called "Rihannsu The Bloodwing Voyages".

(All this is part of the 40th anniversary of Star Trek celebrations, apparently.)

So having read the two books I missed, I resumed reading "The Empty Chair" and it made a lot more sense, although rereading the first two books probably would have helped a bit too. When I got to the end of "The Empty Chair" and Kirk receives something he has obviously been looking for, I had no idea what the thing was. It is possible the reader is not meant to know, but the answer might be in one of those earlier volumes. And I really had no idea what was happening in the last scene. I guess it is based on one of the first two books, which after twenty years, I've forgotten.

So there is a problem having a series with respectively three, thirteen, and six years between its components, although this will not be a problem for a new reader who picks up the books now.

Before I bought the anthology volume I read a negative review of "Swordhunt" on Amazon. The reviewer didn't think enough happened, and was somewhat upset because it apparently doesn't really have an ending and just flows into "Honorblade". In the new anthology the two are combined as "Swordhunt" and I have no idea where the earlier break could have been.

Briefly these books are the story of a Romulan commander named Ael, her ship Bloodwing, and how through a series of encounters and interactions with James Kirk, she leads a Romulan civil war. As I said, it expands our knowledge of the Romulans considerably. I've also been confused about this empire without an emperor, whether there was one or more Praetors, who the Senate are, etc. These questions are answered, at least for this period in Romulan history.

There's more talking than action, but I liked that. There are also bonuses, like briefly meeting the character Sam Coglan again, and encountering the only two Yankees fans on Romulus.

There's also a place towards the end., with major changes among the Romulans, and Spock in the midst of it, when you wonder why he doesn't just start the Re-unification process that he takes up decades later during "Star Trek The Next Generation"? Duane answers that, and shows us that perhaps this is where Spock originally gets the idea. (Now I really wish the film "Nemesis", all of which takes place on Romulus or in Romulan space, had told us where Spock was at this time. Presumably there was no way to get Leonard Nimoy into the film, but it was a large hole.)

One also wonders why, if everything is changed, when we get back to the Romulans in the TNG episodes "Unification" the empire seems as closed in and totalitarian as before? This too Duane provides an answer for, and perhaps it puts the later TNG/DS9 Romulans into a more understandable context. Ael's remarks to Kirk towards the end reflect this:

"But bear in mind that things will change here, and may do so unexpectedly. When they do, I must react as I must. It has even occurred to me that, if matters do not go as I plan, you should not be surprised if for some while, I and all my people might close our borders, and vanish to put our house in order...It will not last forever. Nothing does. But after such a withdrawal, or absence, when we appear again, possibly you should not be surprised if we do not loók, or act, as we do now..."

The Empty Chair is the final book in a five-book series that began 22 years ago.

In 1984, Diane Duane wrote an original Star Trek series novel entitled, My Enemy, My Ally. This immediately became (and has remained) my favorite Star Trek novel, and one of my favorite books of all time.

My Enemy, My Ally builds the world of the Rihannsu, or Romulans, and introduces to fiction the most fascinating Star Trek "guest" character of all time: Commander-General Ael t'Rllaillieu, Captain Kirk's Romulan nemesis and long-time enemy, aunt to the Romulan commander from whom they stole the cloaking device (see the episode, The Enterprise Incident). Committing treason by doing so, Ael comes seeking Kirk's help, because her government has been kidnapping Vulcans and using their brain matter to enhance their own limited telepathic powers.

It's an amazing book, the first of a series to chronicle Ael, her struggle to bring honor back to the Rihannsu empire, and her relationship with Kirk and company.

After 22 years, the final book in the series was published this month. The Empty Chair brings to a close, by an extraordinary story that had me nauseous most of the time with anticipation and fear, this brilliant tale. I won't give the plot away, but I will say that I've waited six years for this book to be published (books 3 and 4 were published in 2000), and its release means more to me than even the release of the last Harry Potter book does. And that's saying something.

Diane Duane is a brilliant author, and has a way of capturing the characters of Kirk and company in a way no other author I've read has been able to do. If you're an original series Star Trek fan, you have to pick up her books. Start with The Wounded Sky, her first Star Trek novel, as its main guest character shows up in the Rihannsu series, which makes allusions to the events in The Wounded Sky, and it would be helpful (but not necessary) to understand what had happened.

From Publishers Weekly
There's something about a crippled, black, schizophrenic, civil rights activist-turned-gunslinger whose body has been hijacked by a white, pregnant demon from a parallel world that keeps a seven-volume story bracingly strong as it veers toward its Armageddon-like conclusion. When Susannah Dean is transported via a magic door on the outskirts of Calla Bryn Sturgis (the scene of much of The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla) to New York City in the summer of 1999, the "demon-mother" who possesses her, Mia, has only one thing on her mind. She must give birth to her "chap" at a predetermined location in Manhattan's East 60s, as instructed by the henchmen-or "Low Men"-of the evil Crimson King. Pressed for time, Father Callahan, preteen Jake and talking pet "billy-bumbler" Oy follow Susannah and Mia's trail in an effort to prevent an act that would quicken the destruction of the Dark Tower and, in turn, of all worlds. Meanwhile, gunslingers Roland and Eddie travel to 1977 Maine in search of bookstore owner Calvin Tower, who is being hunted down by mobster Enrico Balazar and his gang, who first appeared in Eddie's version of New York in The Drawing of the Three Avid readers of the series will either be completely enthralled or extremely irritated when, in a gutsy move, the author weaves his own character into this unpredictable saga, but either way there's no denying the ingenuity with which King paints a candid picture of himself. The sixth installment of this magnum opus stops short with the biggest cliffhanger of King's career, but readers at the edge of their seats need only wait a few short months (Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower) to find out how-and if-King's fictional universe will come to an end. 10 full-color illus. not seen by PW.

From Booklist
King's epical Dark Tower hastens to a close, and its penultimate volume is one of the speediest. The gunslingers of Mid-World and other alternate Earths have defeated The Wolves of the Calla (2003) but lost one of their number. Susannah Dean, nee Odetta Holmes, lacking her lower legs after a minion of the Satan of Mid-World, the Crimson King, pushed her in front of a subway train, and whose personality is sometimes split between black bourgeoise Odetta and viciously paranoiac Detta Walker, has been taken over by the spirit Mia to be the body in which Mia will gestate a boy who will eventually kill head gunslinger Roland. The child is to be born in New York in 1999, which is where Susannah-Mia repairs through one of the doors between worlds. The other gunslingers pursue through the same door, but only 11-year-old Jake Chambers, accompanied by former 'Salems' Lot priest Don Callahan, get to New York. Roland and Susannah's husband, Eddie Dean, tumble into an ambush in New England in 1977. Each chapter--called a stanza and ending with two songlike quatrains--advances one subset of gunslingers' progress. King keeps us on tenterhooks throughout--and leaves us there. Before quite departing, he tacks on a clever coda about the gradual creation of the Dark Tower--but in which world? The series concludes with The Dark Tower in September. Ray Olson

In Deference to the Writer
By Brian Seiler
Given the rather venomous reaction criticism of the rather un-poetic nature of this particular book have received from certain members among us of the writing community, I'll try to avoid making any such comparisons. Frankly, I'm not sure why you'd want to read anything that sounds like Stephen King writing poetry--the two that he has published were absolutely terrible, and a testament to the fact that he should never write anything other than prose.

That said, you'll notice, if you're a dedicated reader of the series, that this book is very similar to the fifth and not so much to any of the other books in the series. This is new for this particular series of books, primarily because these last three were released in the course of a year and a half and the previous four took over twenty. Let's take a look at the good and the bad, shall we?

I'll start with the bad, because I'm better at that. For one thing, I think that this book (in light of the events of Wolves of the Calla and The Dark Tower) is terribly patched together. And I mean that literally. It comes up to only a little over four hundred pages, and there's a couple of hundred that could easily have been lifted out of the next book in the series and dropped in here without so much as a ripple. On the whole, I think that would have been better for everybody, and it kind of bothers me the way that this particular book seems to rush along when compared to its neighboring titles. It also does a lot of introducing of plot elements that it makes absolutely no attempt to resolve, which is just lazy writing and what some would call a shameless argument to get people to buy the final book.

The writing itself is pretty much as it was in the fifth story, which is to say that it's much like Stephen King's usual storytelling voice, only with a little bit of manufactured dialectic thrown in for good measure. It lags in places and trips along quickly in others, but on the whole the story is still not as fast paced as, say, The Waste Lands--after four hundred pages, there's still only perhaps one or two action scenes of any note or moment. Most of the story is again spent in conversation and internal monologue, which is fine by me, but if readers are expecting a return to the past for the series, they had best think again.

Extended character development is mostly not a factor in this book, but that's probably more due to the fact that these characters should already be familiar to readers than anything else. The characters, at this point, are what they are, although I will admit that there was an apparent glaring flaw in Eddie's conduct halfway through the book (where his primary concern suddenly does a complete 180) that I don't think is explained anywhere near adequately. I'll also say right now that I hate it when authors try to write books that know they're books. You'll know what I'm talking about when I read the series, but ever since Illuminatus! it's been nothing more than gimmicky noise to me (as it was then). I don't have much taste for it, but I believe most readers will find it a novel concept.

As a Dark Tower book, I'd put this one near the bottom, if only because so little of any import actually HAPPENS in this volume. As a book in general, I'd say it's about what you'd expect from a Stephen King book. The writing will keep your attention and keep you turning the pages, the plot will be interesting enough to keep you involved but nothing that will leave you gaping in amazement, and the language and character backstory will again be some of the best elements.

For Dark Tower fans, it goes without saying that this book goes in their collections. For others, I'd recommend that you try out the first two or three books and then make your decisions--by the time you get to here, you'll either be sold on the series or you won't.

Stranger in the Moonlight (Moonlight Trilogy, Book 2), by Jude Deveraux

An enchanting new contemporary romance set in Edilean, about two childhood friends who are reunited after years apart, only to discover that the spark they felt even as kids still remains...

In the second novel in her bestselling Edilean trilogy, Jude Deveraux returns to the idyllic Virginia town where three best girlfriends joyfully reunite as they each seek out their heartfelt dreams and desires.

Kim Aldredge is delighted that her dear college “sister” Jecca has found lasting love with Kim’s cousin Tristan. But despite her flourishing jewelry-making career, Kim’s own happiness seems as distant as the childhood summer when she played the hours away with young Travis Merritt, who came to Edilean with his mother under mysterious circumstances. At the end of that innocent season, he promised Kim he would return one day . . . and then vanished without even a goodbye. Years later, a worn photo is Kim’s only proof of the perfect joy they shared. But when she least expects it, Travis, now a savvy Manhattan attorney, will crash into her life once more. Will Kim see the boy she knew under the man he’s become?

Guess I am a sucker for romance. . .
By Kharabella
I am not her target reader. I am a city girl, ethnic-American, with a degree in English and French Literature. I am not sure I had ever heard of Jude Devereaux two years ago. (I probably would have thought she was Blanche's sister!) But I am a sucker for romance, and these books deliver!

Granted, you have to be able to look past a few things.

You have to be able to look past the stereotypical perfection of these characters. Get past the fact that Travis just HAPPENS to have a Stanford degree and a degree from Harvard Law, and is filthy rich AND has expertise in various martial arts disciplines AND used to be a Hollywood stuntman. You have to be able to get past the fact that Kim has known what she wanted to be in life since she was 8, and has had no detours in making her dreams happen, and just when she thinks she won't meet a man who isn't threatened by her success, she meets Travis -- ube-Rich martial arts expert/Ivy League lawyer. You have to be able to get past how perfectly masculine he is, even when he "softly" declares his love, and how perfect and feminine she is, even when she is wearing no makeup and barefoot. And you have to be able to get past the fact that there are three plots here that are not well integrated.

But, if you can do all that, and still enjoy that feeling of spying in while two people fall in love, ENJOY IT! This Edilean series has been my guilty little pleasure since I read the first one, Lavender Morning, on a flight home. It was cute, so I have been reading them all as they come out. I'll read the next one too. Sometimes, I just need to read a love story, curled up with a bowl of popcorn!

Delightful...Highly recommend
By Ashtin
I highly recommend this book. In fact, I highly recommend all of Jude Deveraux's novels.

Since most people just scan the reviews, I wanted that to be the first thing that anyone noticed because it's the most important. Now on to the good stuff.....

Stranger in the Moonlight is a pleasant story about Kimberly and Travis. They meet in "quaint" Edilean, Virginia when they are children. Their experiences together eventually end up shaping who they become as adults. Travis mysteriously leaves and causes Kim to always wonder about him. Many years later, Travis finds himself back in Edilean to help his mother but also back in love with Kim. What follows is a sweet romance that leaves the reader smiling for hours.

I'm a huge fan of all of Jude's books. I've read all of them and anxiously wait for the next one. At first I felt skeptical of the Edilean series. I had grown to love the Montgomery's and Taggert's and didn't want to leave them. She has, of course, won me over with this wonderful little town. I don't know why I ever doubted it. The feeling of "home" is definitely present in all the books in this series. The warmth she seems to create with this town envelops the reader. If you are a fan that was skeptical as well, give it a chance. It's worth it.

I have always admired the characters that Jude creates. There is exceptional character development and at the end of the book you know the people inside and out. It creates a connection that is missing in so many books today. Her characters are STRONG. I think this is what I like the most. Her male AND female characters are strong, intelligent, interesting people that are capable of overcoming any challenge. They have unique interests and most of all, a passion for them. I find that most books have simpering, whiny females that just let life happen. It's my biggest pet peeve in books. Travis was surprising and diverse. I found him to be a wonderful character. Kimberly was sweet, insightful, and creative but I would have liked to have seen more gumption from her. I didn't question whether or not it was there, but I would have liked for it to have shown more.

Her books always make me laugh, cry, and smile so much my face hurts. This was definitely a smile book. I didn't cry. I think it could have used more conflict, but at the same time, I liked seeing the characters so happy together. I thought Travis had it a little bit too easy with Kim. Granted, they've been in love since childhood, but it needed some extra sizzle in my opinion. But what do I know?!!

Overall, I LOVED it. :)

If I could rate a half star I would!
By Michelle
This book has way too many points of view!! I'm so glad I didn't pay for it, but won it on firstreads.

This is a story where a boy meets a girl, they spend a week or a summer together and then go their seperate ways. The boy is about 14, the girl around 8. FAST FORWARD TO ADULTHOOD - each remember the other as adults and imagine they might have been in love. There is no in between story - no growing up without the other and yearning.. no nothing like that. Just simply FAST FORWARD.

There were a lot of areas that simply rambled on without any real meaning or point to them.

You may think this will be a good book, after all, imagine the scenario right? They come together again after all those years.. well, it just doesn't really happen like that. If you blink you will miss them getting back together.. the rest of the blook is blah blah blah blah.. well, pointless jabbering.

This book not only fell short, it fell off a 6000 ft high cliff!

This book lacks passion, romance, sizzle.. ANYTHING worth reading! You don't even get a good feel for the main characters or what they think, how they feel.. nothing!

Aside from all of that there are even more issues! The book goes on non-stop about how the main characters father has kept his mother prisoner in a loveless marriage yadda yadda.. and how the main charcter will stop at nothing to see his mom get the divorce she wants. And hundreds of pages later - the moms new 'boyfriend/lover' calls the husband on the phone asking for the divorce and the father agreed with no hesitation, no effort at all! That was IT! So this and all the other 'issue's' in the book? NOT EVEN AN ISSUE!

I felt SO CHEATED of my time after reading this I can't even begin to tell you! WHAT A WASTE!

To be honest I couldn't even finish it! I had to skim through the last few pages in an effort to complete it. I kept hoping for that payoff.. THAT NEVER CAME!

This book continued to get nothing but WORSE and more boring! This author actually introduced a new couple (strangers) meeting, getting engaged, and announcing it in less than a chapter!?! It was yet ANOTHER unnecessary addition to the already overly worded, VERY prolonged book! IT WAS NOT NEEDED! REally?! I am still shocked that this author did that?! ug!!!!!!!!!!

This book comes accross to me as a first attempt by a first time author, and not a very good one!

I do NOT recommend this book! SAVE YOUR TIME AND YOUR MONEY for something better!
