Raises Fascinating Questions About the Realities We Create for Ourselves

This is Emoto's second book. Like his first (The Hidden Power of Water),this is full of dozens of water crystal photos. The most stunning photos come from positive words written or spoken to the water samples before freezing and photographing. Beautiful crystals are also formed by playing classical or complex music to the samples; the ugly and deformed crystals have been subjected to heavy metal music. (When I called his office in Japan to get permission to show some of these photos in my workshops and presentations, one of Emotoâ(tm)s research assistants emphasized that "Dr. Emoto isn't against heavy metal music." Water samples that were prayed to ""even though the water sample was polluted" also resulted in dazzling crystals.

Emoto's research has led him to conclude that "water faithfully mirrors all the vibrations created in the world, and changes these vibrations into a form that can be seen with the human eye."

"Since our human body is about 70 percent water, do we also mirror and manifest the vibrations we surround ourselves with? If so, what kind of reality is that creating in our lives?"

About the Author
Nava Atlas is best known (at least for now!) as the author and illustrator of many vegan and vegetarian cookbooks, most recently Vegan Express, Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons, The Vegetarian Family Cookbook, and The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet. In addition to cookbooks, Nava also produces visual books on family themes, humor, and women's issues. Secret Recipes for the Modern Wife (April 2009) is a satiric look at contemporary marriage and motherhood in the form of a faux 1950s cookbook. Nava is also a fine artist. A Real Gem of a Book

There's so much to love about this book, from the gorgeous layout that makes it a pleasure to page through, to the insightful comments by the author. I'm a writer who loves literature, and I've been keeping this book on my bedside table to enjoy a few pages each night. It's pure delight to read what these special ladies had to say about their work, their process, and their life. This book is an inspiration.

Literary Ladies Is A True Inspiration for Writers

I hungrily devoured Literary Ladies" Guide to The Writing Life. Like Nava, I spent my childhood writing, drawing, and reading. As the child of parents who owned a bookstore and who got my first library card for me when I was only 2, reading was an obsession for me. When I was in elementary school, as an advanced reader, I was already enjoying the works of the women writers in Literary Ladies. I tried to use their works as models for my own writing and felt a kinship with women writers even if they had lived a long time before me or in different places. I felt as if we were sisters and that is a powerful connection for a child who longs to be a writer.

Reading this book has drawn up a wellspring of love for these women from my childhood days of admiration. I feel that I know them a lot better now. Isn't it amazing how a writer who one holds in awe actually felt the same fear and doubt about her work (which was so good it is now a classic and taught in college classrooms!) as we do about ours? Their advice is good and it is fascinating to see how they swept the challenges that faced women in their lifetimes out of the way to create these masterpieces?

I highly recommend this book to anyone (not just women) who admire the beautiful literary works of these writers , to those who love to write, even if only just for herself, and for those who dare to dream of great things and would like some encouragement. This is a lovely, inspiring book that reads like a conversation with an old friend. Kudos to Nava Atlas for creating this masterpiece and just one request- Nava, please, will you write a Literary Ladies' Guide to The Writing Life Part 2?!

honeymoon/hotshot

The book I read had both Honeymoon and Hotshot together. Both were excellent in plot and the humor is refreshing. A girl named Honey with a last name of Moon starts off with a smile from me. (Cute)
I enjoyed Hotshot. Right away Ms. Phillips makes you root for the poor child and good things happen to her throughout. Getting the name, Hotshot, was like tonue-in-cheek humor. But, the mousey, good girl who tried so hard to be her best grew into that name. I really like reading Susan Elizabeth Phillips' books.

different from more recent SEP, dark but beautiful

There is something great but different about these two books than the more recent Susan Elizabeth Phillips books (e.g. Match Me if You Can, Natural-Born Charmer). They are darker... with so much tragedy and sadness in them... but such lovely female characters and slow-developing romances... not much of the humor I love in her more recent writing, but they're actually maybe more chic-lit because of the progress of the strong female characters in them.

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

Voyages of Imagination by Jeff Ayers is a must have for all Star Trek fans as it covers every single Star Trek book ever published. From the Bantam series to the current Pocket line to the YA series, everything is here and not only that, it's layered in an easy to read format. Pictures grace the book on every page. While not in color, the pictures are clear and easy to see.

This book has been meticulously researched and it shows. Jeff Ayers was able to get the majority of the authors for interviews on each book covered. Sadly, authors like Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens among others declined to be interviewed but it doesn't take away from the book. In fact, this is the largest, biggest and longest Trek book ever.

Was this book worth the wait? Absolutely. I had no idea how many books were out there. I had no clue that so many existed. Luckily, the book is broken down into different sections that make it easier to browse to a certain point in the book.

Some of the things included in this book, is a comprehensive Star Trek Fiction Timeline that places the books and stories where they belong in the Star Trek Screen Chronology. Also included, is an index and a bibliography which allows you to go to a specific page or book in no time. Very useful if you use this book as a reference source or encylopedia.

It took a little over two years for the making of this book and it really shows. Jeff Ayers had to track a lot of people down just to get them in the book and in the end, it gives you a better perspective of what went into the making of a certain book. Why it was made, what led to it and many other fascinating stuff. It's a book that will be loved by all fans.

For years, fans wanted a book like this and we now have one and for that we have Jeff Ayers to thank who made many fans dreams come true.

Must-have for serious Trekkers.

This compendium has a summary of every Star Trek novel to-date, and interviews with at least half of the authors. For someone like me, who will glom onto a series and read them in order, this is the most wonderful and interesting help. There are other "inside" information type sections as well. I bought a copy for our library, as it's too good to keep to oneself.

I am not a big Star Trek Fiction consumer but I bought this book because I wanted the ability to review the increasingly complicated history of Star Trek Fiction. This book does a superb job bringing the book franchise into focus and is an essential part of the Trekkers' reference collection.

Hundreds of drawings and sculptures were created to populate the mystery island, building a comprehensive menagerie with complex ecosystems and forbidding habitats. Though only a handful will appear on screen, presented within these pages is a vast collection of creatures and lore, each lovingly depicted with production art and new illustrations created especially for this book.

a natural history of a lost world

One problem with lost world stories is authors have always assumed that evolution would suddenly come to a grinding halt 65 million years ago. That's why you get prehistoric plateaus, mysterious islands and underground worlds filled with T. rexes and triceratops resembling their ancient counterparts. I believe it was Greg Bear who first broke this trend in this novel Dinosaur Summer. And I'm glad to see the filmmakers of King Kong have decided to break it as well.

Both science fiction fans and paleontology lovers will enjoy The World of Kong. It is a bestiary and field guide to the wildlife of Skull Island, at times amazing in its detail, documenting even the insects and fish that thrive in the imaginary ecosystem. The folks at the special effects Weta Workshop let their imaginations run wild in this collaborative effort, but kept their beasts mostly grounded in science. In these pages are the descendants of Permian mammal-like reptiles, dinosaurs and even prehistoric terror birds, along with a few new creatures like flying rats (but, alas, no pterosaurs other than one short mention). The book is full of gorgeous color illustrations accompanied by short, concise articles documenting the behavior and evolutionary history of the species described in it.

I would give this work 4 1/2 stars if that were possible because there are some minor problems. There is too much focus on predators, as if everyone at Weta was in a competition to dream up the scariest monster. The authors also play up the "lizardness" of their dinosaurs despite the evolutionary link to birds, giving their V. rex (an evolved T. rex) crocodile-like hide and their "raptors" a snake-like skin. And if you wanted to be priggish about it, an island is far too small an area to support all these large animals, and some of the insects and spiders are far larger than what is physically possible. (A dinosaur-eating spider?!) But these are minor complaints. Creature lovers and fans of fantasy illustration will dig this book.

Great art and world design!

The World of Kong is a fantastic book that depicts the world beyond what you're going to see in the movie. All of the art is original designs of environments, creatures and their brief "archeological" explanations. They're seemingly a mixture of digital and traditional art. No still shots/photos from the movie or script included.

The "expedition journal" format breaks up the material very well and makes it a fun read. The book cover itself is jungle green with gold text and image of Kong. There is more in depth information of the various creatures that inhabit Skull island from dinosaurs, insects, and aquatic life. Great landscape artwork gives you a solid idea of what Skull Island is

The book may be short of images of Kong (actually, there are several) the people and everything you'll see in the movie, but... that's what the movie is for!

Quite a piece!

Finally someone did it right! And, no I'm not talking about a remake of King Kong. Rather, someone published a book of movie development art that actually reflects some of the fictional element of the film in a stylish way. Crammed full of gorgeous paintings, this book also features text that gives the reader the impression that he or she is studying the results of some paleo-expedition to Skull Island. Rather than repeat the same old "making-of" quality of other movie art books, this one serves as a nice compliment to the movie.

The only drawback is that most of the book deals with the numerous dinosaurs and giant bugs that inhabit the island and paintings of Kong (our hero, after all) are few and relegated to the last few pages. I personally would have also like to have seen more of the tribal village, but that's nitpicking.

That said, if you're a Kong fan, of all the merchandise that's bound to spew forth from Peter Jackson's remake, this book will by far be the most stylish.
