Unfortunate graphic and title for excellent book

I first learned of this book in an epilogue to a novel involving long life extension. The author recommended this book as a serious study of life extension in modern science. The title seemed a bit much and the graphic does not do the author any favors! But this is a book well worth reading as it is intelligent, readable and measured in discussing numerous topics surrounding both the ethical and scientific issues surrounding life extension. Covering extensively historical developments not just in science but in religion, ethics and morality it is a worthwhile read for anyone over 35 and who for their parents, themselves and their friends have no choice to but face many of the issues raised. A better title for this book would have been "Immortality and the scientific revolution in biology" but then I am not a book seller! I would in any case have omitted the rather strange and unsettling graphic. Considering the issue of death and longevity is a difficult topic for most of us and this book is a very serious consideration of numerous aspects that are worthy of study. In addition to covering the various efforts to extend life indefinitely it studies issues of life after death (and the hoaxes surrounding mediums, paranormal study etc.) in careful consideration of evidence pro and con. Numerous other subjects are covered as well and I can recommend it to anyone willing to seriously consider the issues the book raises. Just do not expect any revealed secrets to living forever!

The New Dynasty warlords are bringing in a shipload of fuel that could give them a vital edge; their opponents have planned to hijack it. Unfortunately, the first Team Icarus has been destroyed, and Herzer Herrick and Megan Travante have to improvise a new one. The sequences in which the new team trains show Ringo's military background, and since many of the new recruits are female survivors of New Dynasty harems, motivation isn't a problem. Sex may be a problem for some readers, but Ringo has the rare knack of showing it as tragic, comic, zany, and lustful all at the same time, depending on who's having it and when. The eventual conclusion of the book is one of those page-turning action scenes that are a Ringo specialty. The question remains, Is the bioengineering of the New Dynasty out as well as down? Small size disappointing

The book I mean. I absolutely love this series and was immensely looking forward to reading this book. When I got it, I was shocked at how thin (in pages) it was. This is usually not a hang-up with me. I almost never check the amount of pages a book has. Especially with one of my favorite authors. This book was 320 pages, his other books in this series were up over 420-540 pages.

So what about the story? While the concept for the storyline was very cool, the writing and plot development could have been flushed out a lot more. A lot. There is a lot of time spent trying to develop Megan and her harem posse. Amusing, but too much frill without the meat of a good story. This book boils down to one plot line, the good guys going to get the ship. So much opportunity for more. I love Ringo, but man, his editor screwed up here, he/she should have thumped Ringo on the head before publishing this book.

To be completely honest, this feels like something thrown together to meet a deadline. So, even though I enjoyed the book, it was just good. It could have been and should have been great, just like all the previous books in this series.

Dissapointing

This book is horrible. This is nothing but a short story that is full of page fillers. I buy everything that ringo puts out before its on the stands and have supported him on his bad ghost reviews but this book is bad. This advances nothing in the series at all except killing off one of the evil sides keyholders. One of the big questions in the previous book hasnt been touched: what of the elf queens response to the evils side messing with elf geense (growing elf deomonds) Lost is magic that kept the series interesting like 1. the great jokes, 2. the chaotic rabbit 3. the wood elf girl. The first book in the series was a great refreshing taste. But the quality of each preceding book has dwindled. John you need to go back to David Weber and ask him how he does it. His last book "At all Costs" was fantastic. Im sorry all your co-authored books are great though.

Another great installment

I read these books years ago, but decided to read them again in preparation of the new Jack West Jr. novel being released later this month. Everything still held my attention & the action never gets old!

An entertaining story, but only the first of 2 parts

I must admit up-front that I was disappointed with this book in that it is now what I expected. Basically, it is the story about magical stones through history and how the Earth may end unless an ancient rite is performed (again) within the next year. Just not my cup of tea usually, but I became engrossed in the book & hit my second disappointment when the book suddenly ends mid-story. This would make an excellent adventure movie for high school boys who like this sort of tale. I found many of the circumstances resolved unreasonably - characters pull out oddball implements, seemingly from thin air, to save themselves, and perform physical activities which even the lamest of minds will have a difficult time accepting.

Matthew Reilly took, in my opinion, a critical misstep with the 7 Deadly Wonders. He filled it with action which was rather dull. If you think this is a contradiction, it is. And yet, he has all these actions sequences, devoid of tension or much surprise.

With the Six Sacred Stones, Reilly rights his literary ship. The action scenes are fraught with danger, even if you know (or think you know) how it will turn out. You connect with some of the characters here in a way which was lacking in Deadly Wonders.

Critics point to three primary complaints in this book: 1) the cliffhanger ending, 2) crazy grammar, and 3) completely made up history to support his storyline.

As for the first, I sympathize, but I'd rather have a novel to read now and wait for the resolution than wait another couple of years for this novel, but bigger. It's an ending that you get at the end of TV seasons, or in Pirates of the Carribbean 2, or the Matrix Reloaded. I'll be patient and pray it was worth the wait. Just like I am with Lost.

Crazy grammar. OK, guilty. But then I'm not reading a Matthew Reilly book for English lessons. If you are, perhaps you should reassess a few things in life.

The creative history and plot - Folks, I've not done any research on any of the subjects, so I can't speak for the accuracy of Reilly's theories. What I do know is this: the great mysteries of the world are just that.... great mysteries. At worst, Reilly has come up with a *fictional* theory and incorporated it in his novel. If you don't like this kind of creative plotting, you should never read any novel which deals with history, because they are by their very nature fictional. Get over it, buckle up and enjoy the ride on this one.

20 Minute On the Road Crossword Puzzles

Very engagning, this handy little crossword puzzle is like crack! For those of you who like Sudoku and fear the NYT Sunday puzzles, but want to play, these books are for you. These puzzles are challenging, but are not brainiac difficult. Whenever I am waiting, I pull it out of my purse and jump right in. They are a handy size to go anywhere, yet easy to read and tough. They don't come apart and I have wagged this one around for a couple of weeks. Great fun. Good stocking stuffer. The plot is twisting, the characters are well shaded, and Brown manipulates each string with a skilled hand, creating a story that will keep listeners puzzled and rapt. Narrator Boutsikaris is a perfect complement to the material. He lends the characters just enough twang to betray their Southern heritage but not so much as to make protagonist Duncan Hatcher seem anything less than a shrewd and hard-edged detective. And for Elise, the gorgeous but married damsel in distress who ties Duncan's libido and loyalties into knots, Boutsikaris employs a lilting tone that simultaneously suggests sweetness, sin and mystery. Did Elise's husband, a distinguished judge, hire someone to kill her, or is she involved in a plot with a drug dealer? Is Duncan making a mistake mistrusting Elise, or is his wariness the one thing that will save him? With Brown's skill for creating rich, layered characters and Boutsikaris's talent for embodying them, this audio doesn't disappoint.

Detective Duncan Hatcher has no reason to like Cato Laird, the judge who let Robert Savich, a Savannah crime lord, slip through the cracks by declaring a mistrial over a juror conflict. But Duncan is all business when he and his partner DeeDee Bowen are called to Laird's house one night to find Laird's beautiful wife, Elise, has fatally shot an intruder. Duncan and DeeDee are immediately suspicious of Elise, who managed to kill the man, Gary Ray Trotter, with a single, precise shot. Elise denies knowing Trotter, but Duncan isn't comfortable dismissing the case as self-defense. When Elise comes to him with the seemingly preposterous assertion that her adoring husband actually wants her dead, Duncan is more suspicious of her, even as his attraction to her grows. He continues to pursue the investigation, despite the fact that Cato himself clearly considers the case closed. But when Elise's car is discovered on a bridge with a dead man in it and no sign of Elise herself, Duncan realizes he may have misjudged Elise and fears it might be too late to help her. Gripping and absorbing, this is Brown's best thriller in years and a must-read for her many devotees. Kristine Huntley

After her last two books, White Hot and Chill Factor, I had little hope that I would like Ricochet. I am so glad that I picked this book up because it restored my faith in Sandra Brown.

Detective Duncan Hatcher's mission in live is to put drug lord Robert Savich behind bars for the rest of his life. During Savich's second murder trial, Judge Cato Laird declares a mistrial on a technicality. Duncan is incensed and more determined than ever to put Savich behind bars for good.

A few days later, Duncan and his partner are called to the scene of a burglary gone wrong. Duncan is shocked to find himself at the house of Judge Cato Laird, where his wife Elise, shot and killed an intruder. Though Cato is very attentive to his wife's needs, Duncan knows something is off. On top of that, he is battling his attraction to Elise Laird. Soon Duncan finds himself putting everything that was important to him in jeopardy...his ethics, his loyalty, and his self respect. Never had he found himself attracted to a suspect before.

When Elise Laird approaches him with an outrageous claim, Duncan doesn't believe her. He feels that Elise is using his attraction against him and refuses to give her the time of day.

When Elise goes missing, he tortures himself by thinking about how he could have prevented it. When bodies start turning up and Elise still isn't found, Duncan starts questioning if what Elise told him had any truth to it.

This book has so many twists and turns, it's hard to put it down. With the perfect combination of mystery and romance, I believe that lovers of Brown's older works (Envy, The Switch, Mirror Image) will love this book.

Believe Her or Not?

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors and with her emergence into the mystery/romance combination; her books usually keep me turning pages as fast as I can read them. However, RICOCHET seemed to miss the mark for me and only fell to the average range. That was a huge disappointment to me - Sandra Brown does not write average books.

RICOCHET focuses on Duncan Hatcher, a hunky police detective, who is bent on putting away a ruthless killer, Robert Savich. However, Savich's trial is declared a mistrial by Superior Court Judge Cato Laird on a technicality and Hatcher is determined to bring the man to justice at any cost which lands Hatcher in jail for two days on a contempt of court charge.

A strange twist of events soon puts Hatcher and his partner, DeeDee Brown, as primary investigators when the honorable judge's wife, Elise, kills an intruder at her home. Things don't add up for Hatcher and he leaves the case open until all of his questions can be answered instead of deciding it a simple case of self defense. The suspicions aren't all that are piqued with Hatcher; Elise gets under his skin like no woman has ever done before. Doesn't matter that she's married to the man who set his archenemy free, Hatcher can't get Elise out of his mind.

When Elise secretly meets Duncan and tells him that her husband is trying to kill her, it only adds more suspicion to the list. Nothing is adding up for Duncan with this beautiful woman and the judge seems too perfect to not be believed. Add into the mix another killing and the disappearance of Elise, and the reader isn't sure what the outcome will be.

The term "RICOCHET" doesn't have anything to do with the actual story - it's what happens to the reader as he/she is tossed back and forth. I went from believing Elise, to not believing her, to maybe believing her, and back again. Talk about a rollercoaster ride... but it wasn't thrilling and instead left me with a bit of motion sickness. I was tossed back and forth a few too many times to feel comfortable. In fact, at the end I was to the point of actually saying, "Who cares... just end it and tell me." That's not how I like feeling during the climax of a well thought out story.

Character development was hit and miss. Duncan Hatcher was well developed and we could see the angst his actions had on his emotional state - he was the son of a preacher and being involved with a married woman wreaked havoc on his mind. DeeDee Brown was fairly well developed - tough, opinionated and strong. In fact, I'd like to see a follow-up book with her as the main character! Elise was not well developed but that was intentional. The reader couldn't grasp whether she was a con artist or a poor soul with tragedy striking at every turn. Savich was not as well developed as he could have been, even though the reader was definitely left with the feeling of dislike. Judge Cato Laird was the one who got too much page time. The numerous emotional scenes we endured when his wife was missing and presumed dead was overkill.

Overall RICOCHET was a decent book but not one of my favorites written by Sandra Brown. I much preferred her previous works, WHITE HOT [...]

Surprisingly dull

Sandra Brown's books are usually very engrossing and enjoyable. However, this was the one exception. Except for the opening scene, there was very little in the way of drama or action. It was mainly police interrogations followed by the "he said...she said" type of stuff. And I grew weary of reading about Detective Hatcher's hard-ons for the victim/suspect (who happens to be married) on every other page. I normally finish a good book within 4-5 days and I had reached the point where I was dreading having to pick this one up. It took two weeks for me to make it only halfway through the book before I decided to put it down for good.
