After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

A Thrilling Read

I first was introduced to Dorian Gray through a book club, and I thought 'Oh no, Oscar Wilde, here I go, another hard to read boring society book". I was wrong. Within the first two chapters of Dorian Gray I was intrigued and fascinated. This book deals with several issues that are as important now as they are today: the way our culture worships beauty and youth, an admiration that boarders on homosexual love, virtues, the differences between men and women, and what art is and what makes it truly art. Dorian Gray is a beautiful young man, who sees a portrait of himself and says "How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young...If only it were the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the portrait to grow old...I would give my soul for that!" The book takes off from there, leading you from a small theater to great parties. While younger readers may find some of the wording as tough as an old gym shoe, anyone older than 13 with an interest in mystery, romance, and how society runs, will find this a pleasurable and haunting read.

What made Oscar Wild(e)?
The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press has published a new edition of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. While there is no burning need for such a volume in the day of Lady Gaga and marriage equality, it's important to remember that Wilde spent two years in prison for being gay and for having the guts (stupidity?) to flaunt his sexuality. In many ways, it was the flaunting rather than the act themselves that so angered his persecutors.
And Dorian Gray, his first and only novel, was certainly a shot fired directly into the heart of Victorian prudery.
And in this day of Kindles, e-books and tweets, this is truly a magnificent job of bookmaking. Oversized, lavishly illustrated and gorgeously presented, Oscar would have loved it. The text is examined minutely, with a variety of comparisons from various publications of the novel, as well as Wilde's original manuscript. While there's nothing particularly new to discover in the emendations from the sources, merely a reinforcement of the outrageousness inherent in the piece, the scholarship is both astounding and informative.
The annotator and editor, Nicholas Frankel, easily and effortlessly places the modern reader in Wilde's time and place, London's late Victorian Age in London. There is still a tingle to Dorian's story of endless debauchery while he remains looking pure and innocent for decades and the painting ages and grows monstrous, reflecting his sins and crimes.
Strangely, the book seems more modern than one would imagine. Rather than merely a potboiler from two centuries back, WIlde's genius imbues the story with a strange and haunting immediacy, and a cautionary tale for us all: Be careful what you wish for.
One could hardly wish for a more beautifully accoutered book.

Soft in the middle, sharp at both ends.

Wilde's philosophical novel remains a compelling parable about outsourced guilt, and nearly every page has at least one eminently quotable line. Nevertheless, the lengthy middle section, which frames Gray's mounting debauchery in a detailed and prolonged discussion of Victorian tastes, grows quickly tedious. The passages are interesting in the abstract as a record of Wilde's apparently obsessive fascination with tapestries and ornament in general, but the novel wouldn't suffer much without them.

Still, though, Dorian Gray's predicament and the choices it enables are provocative, and he himself is a character with possibilities that extend far beyond the four walls of Wilde's short novel.

This is an adorable, cute, fun little read! I love these types of books. They're really nice to have on hand when you're feeling down and just want a little pick me up. The pictures are absolutely adorable and I have no complaints whatsoever.

The editing is laughable.

This book provides standard information about mental health nursing care in an easy to read manner. However, the book and resource materials are poorly edited. Misspellings, blatant mistakes, and wrong answer keys are common. In one section of the online resources for the book, they refer to bupropion as generic Prozac, a mistake that if made in the field, would get the nurse's license taken.

For such a late edition of the book, it's unimaginable that this many mistakes exist!

What's worse, teachers taking questions from the test bank must be careful because the editing mistakes are frequent in there as well. It has been an endless frustration to my nursing class because my inexperienced professor is of the mindset that if it's in the test bank, it is right, even though many of the questions we received were clearly wrong or had more than one answer.

That being said, this book also has issues where information in one section of the chapter contradicts information appearing in another section. I believe this is due to the fact that multiple writers composed each chapter.

Hey editors:
- It's spelled "Rett Syndrome", not "Rhett's Disorder". And they do know what causes it. p639
- It's no longer considered appropriate to use a tongue blade on a seizing individual. Get this out of your book. p392
- The paragraph about Middle Eastern suicide bombers is racist and offensive, and doesn't really belong in a mental health nursing book. Keep your politics to yourself. p552
- "Cent-rally" is not supposed to be spelled with a hyphen. p328
- About half the questions on the resource CD are keyed wrong. Thanks again.
- and much much more.

Elizabeth Varcarolis/Elsevier could do well by hiring an editor or ten. I'd be embarrassed to have my name on such a sloppy book.

Well-organized. Elsevier, EDIT YOUR TEXTBOOKS

The book is well-organized for the most part, and easy to follow. The reading level is a little simple and conversational, so it's probably really intended for a basic intro to psych nursing -- the "advanced practice" sections could probably be left out, as anyone who is studying to be an advanced practice psych nurse would find this book too simplistic and without sufficient detail. The care plans at the end of each chapter are very good, as are the majority of tables and vignettes.

However...there are spelling mistakes, editing mistakes, and (as is almost always the case with Elsevier titles), problems with the practice questions and answers. I'm right now looking at chapter 17 (Cognitive Disorders) -- the chapter review question #5 (there are 5 per chapter) is an alternate-item "select all that apply" question, and the options are numbered 1-6; the answer key in the back of the book says the correct answers are "4,5,6,7." There is no "7." This sort of mistake, even in late editions, is exactly what I have come to be very frustrated with while using Elsevier/Mosby/Evolve materials. There are also several sentences with misspellings in words or letters missing or spaces in the middle of a word. This should not be the case in a 6th edition book. It's unprofessional and distracting.

I would like some rationales for the chapter review questions -- there's not much learning in not knowing why a certain answer is better than the others.

Review - The Two Moons by James P. Hogan

These are very good stories by my favorite science fiction author.

Little did I know that this book is a combination of two books I have had for many years from Hogan's earlier works "Inherit the Stars" and "The Gentle Giants of Ganymede".

Strong sf mystery followed by a weak sequel

Inherit the Stars is the better of the two books published jointly as The Two Moons. A body, apparently human, is found on a cave on the moon. Another body, that of a giant alien, is found in a spaceship buried on Ganymede. Victor Hunt leads the investigation of these two strange discoveries. The plot can be summarized as "scientists at work," and it's intellectually interesting but lacking in emotional resonance, unless watching scientists at work is one of your emotional triggers. Inherit the Stars is nonetheless a well-written sf mystery that grabs hold of big ideas and pieces them together to solve a fascinating puzzle. It avoids a common failing of hard sf: descriptions of science that are incomprehensible to a lay reader. James Hogan explains the science he invokes in clear language and makes the application of the scientific process comprehensible. While I might have hoped for more human drama -- some acknowledgment that hundreds of people working together for years on Earth and for months on a ship traveling to Ganymede might form positive or negative relationships -- the intellectual drama in Inherit the Stars is nearly strong enough to compensate for the absence of its human counterpart. Standing alone, Inherit the Stars is easily a 4 star novel.

The Gentle Giants of Ganymede, on the other hand, is a much weaker novel. The plots are loosely connected by the giant alien in the buried spaceship on Ganymede. The puzzle in the first novel, now solved, sets up the first contact between humans and the giant aliens. The first half of the novel generates some energy despite its tendency to turn into a series of science lectures, primarily focused on how the giants manage to control gravity. In the novel's second half, after first contact is made, the energy dissipates. The story leads up to a plot twist that is probably supposed to leave the reader gasping with surprise, but it's not all that surprising and ultimately amounts to just another Big Idea. There is little human (or alien) drama in the story; it's interesting, in its own way, but not captivating.

Inherit the Stars maintains a strong sense of mystery that is absent from the sequel. While the two main characters from Inherit the Stars return in Giants, they play a relatively small role. A computer called ZORAC, responsible for translating communications between humans and the aliens, has more personality than any of the human characters. The giants are more intriguing (they abhor conflict and value cooperation) but by the novel's second half, they are relegated to the status of tourists. Ultimately, although the sequel has its moments, it doesn't have enough of them to sustain the sense of wonder that the first novel conjures. I would give it 3 stars. I suppose that makes this a 3 1/2 star review for the pair, but I'm giving it 4 because it's worth reading Inherit the Stars even if you never find time to read the sequel.
