Roland of Gilead's quest to save all worlds from evil continues in this fifth installment of King's epic tale, which finds the gunslinger and his companions helping the farmers of Calla Bryn Sturgis fight against the terrifying "Wolves" who threaten to kidnap the Calla's children. Joining them is Father Callahan, who first appeared in King's second book, 'Salem's Lot (1975). Using a low, gruff voice that only Clint Eastwood could equal, Guidall aptly captures Roland's rough-edged character, but it's often difficult to distinguish between the tenors he employs for the book's many male characters. Andy the robot, however, is one character that listeners won't confuse with the others. Wise-guy gunslinger Eddie might compare Andy to Star Wars' C3PO, both in his "complacent, slightly prissy voice" and his lanky, mechanical appearance, but avid listeners will find that the tone Guidall adopts for Andy more closely resembles that of the beloved 1980s toy Speak & Spell. In the afterword, King thanks the narrator of the first four Dark Tower novels, Frank Muller, whose debilitating motorcycle accident in 2001 prevented him from finishing the series. Wizard and Glass (1997), volume 4 of King's massive, postapocalyptic, chivalrized western, The Dark Tower, was rather a snooze, not for lack of action but because it was primarily a flashback that drew unmercifully on King's stash of horse-opera cliches. "'S'all very nice," one thought, "but let's move it, Steve!" Volume 5--this book--moves it, despite not getting Roland the Gunslinger much nearer the Dark Tower, taking another big backward glance, and continuing to mine an open pit of oater conceits. Roland's ka-tet--himself and three twentieth-century New Yorkers, all of them now fellow gunslingers--approach a ranching and farming community anticipating a recurrent pestilence. After 23 years, the Wolves are coming from the evil-darkened East to abduct one of every pair of prepubescent twins older than three. The children will be returned, but nearly witless and sterile, doomed to grow immensely and enormously painfully in their middle teens, serve (if not too stupid) as workhorses, and suddenly, painfully wither and die in their early thirties. An erstwhile priest in the community knows what Roland and company are, and he persuades a community to send a committee to ask for their help. Of course, once asked, the code of the gunslinger compels acceptance. Gonna be a humdinger of a fight! Fore and aft of the showdown, King stuffs the book with juice, like the big flashback, in which Pere Callahan reveals his past in . . . 'Salem's Lot. the ka-test has reached a town which needs their help. there are rules for asking for help from gunslingers, and the town must decide amongst themselves whether they wish to pay the price. the kidnapping and destruction of their children has gone in for generations and they have had enough. there is a viper in the nest and they must tread carefully as they make their plans. they must save the Rose back in New York. and one of the ka-test is about to break the very special union, no matter what.

we have come to such a pinnacle of pain for all involved. the ka-test stretches to the breaking point more than once and then it expands. but as with any movement, there is pain. read on

Slows down a little with the back story of a new character

I've been reading my way through this entire series this year and can't see any reason to ever give it anything less than 5-star ratings based on the creative force and content behind it. Sure, in a book series some volumes will not be your favorite. Was this my favorite of the five I've read? Probably not. Callahan's back story became very lengthy and redundant. I felt like I was reading the same three pages over and over for a good fifty page stretch. Otherwise I really enjoyed it and have jumped straight into book six right after reading the last page of "Calla." I'm obsessed with this series as I'm sure you are as well if you're reading this.

An Adventure, do ya ken?

While fans of the series may have thought that Roland's tale at the 2nd half of Wizard and Glass dragged on a bit, they will find that King returns to top form in Wolves of the Calla. From the onset you are drawn in and the tension only builds; up to the very last page. Not only are the main characters grown, but King creates an entire town that you can't help root for. A very good read indeed.

To know the man, you gotta read the man...

Let's be honest-if you're not a fan of pro wrestling, very little here will change your mind. But if you are a fan, especially of the man many call the Greatest Of All Time "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, you'll be riveted by this autobiography. Flair lets it all hang out, figuratively and literally, in this tell-all that's surprisingly devoid of arrogance and excuses (2 things most wrestling veterans seem to possess in spades).
Of course, if you've followed Flair's career for awhile, as I have, his avoidance at "putting himself over" is not really that shocking. Think what you will about his lack of financial smarts, his choice early in his career to put his career and party lifestyle over being faithful to his wife or present for his kids. But there's no denying that in the ring, Ric Flair was not only brilliant, but a giver as well.
If you're on the fence, get off. This is fun stuff.

This is not another coming-out story. Mary Cheney, whose father, Dick Cheney, was not upset by her sexual orientation, carefully avoids this overworked theme and focuses on her role in the 2000 and 2004 campaigns of his run for vice-president of the United States. By doing so, she pursues another tired topic, the insider look at political campaigns. Cheney's view lacks any introspection and verges on idolatry: not only does Father always know best but he is also calm, courageous, righteous, loving and wise. Whenever her dad's name comes up, Cheney's voice becomes sugary and worshipful. Her anecdotes and breezy delivery move the audio along nicely, but sometimes her narrative undercuts the hero she worships, as when her father, confronted by an audience of elementary schoolers instead of their parents, proceeds with a speech on school bonds that baffles his young audience. Those hoping for a look at Cheney's relationship with her partner, Heather Poe, will be disappointed. Cheney's voice seethes with anger at intrusions into her private life, but she fails to see that if the Democrats hadn't pushed her into the spotlight, there would be little interest in this book.

Um. Good lord this is bad.

This is a staggeringly shallow and badly written book on both a conceptual and stylistic level. Cheney has little understanding of the complexity of the relationship between sexual identity, personal freedom, and contemporary politics; mostly she's turned this into a juvenile rant about the occasional tensions in her relatively cushy life - she seems to be impressed that she's caught in a limbo-state between her parents' politics and her sexuality, but she doesn't really grasp in any meaningful way what her situation really demands, nor does she have any ability to offer a thoughtful political perspective that manages to convey the combination of conservative philosophy with personal freedom.

This is a failed book, a vanity piece, and an embarrassing display of the decadence of privilege. She's an intellectual thug - ham-handed in her phrasing, blinkered and plodding in her political perspective, and utterly devoid of anything but fawning praise or insipid attacks, with no sophisticated balance between. Too bad, too, because her situation could have brought about a really thoughtful analytical perspective on how to develop a new understanding of the balance between traditional conservatism and new notions of individual liberty, but she's brought the whole debate back several steps.

Badly Written

I wanted to read about how a campaign works from behind the scenes, and I was extremely disappointed with this book. It's not only badly written but it goes on and on and on. It's almost as if she repeats the same lines over and over again. Yeah, there were a few entries about growing up that were nice but it falls short of being worth the read, or the money for that matter. Skip this one and buy something else.

I don't know what this book is trying to accomplish, it's neither history or a good political analysis nor a good biography. It seems like a bunch of poorly written passages hurried together to make money before her father's tenure. Her silence before the book makes it suspect.

Prayers marks a departure for Ferrigno, whose previous books focused on life in contemporary Southern California. In Ferrigno's neo-Orwellian world, Mount Rushmore has disappeared, LAX has become Bin Laden International, and midday prayers interrupt the Super Bowl. Critics expressed different ideas about the plot, using words such as "preposterous," "credible," and even "ordinary" to describe it. There's no doubt, however, that Ferrigno raises important questions about religious freedom while handling the subject of Islamic faith with great insight and evenhandedness. If the plot sometimes overwhelms character development, he still allows his creations to air their own opinions without moralizing. In sum: a fast-paced thriller with timely appeal.

The nation is now divided into the Islamic States of America, whose capital is in Seattle, and the Bible Belt, located in the South. Young and fearless researcher Sarah Dougan, a moderate Muslim who frequently chafes at the restrictions placed on women, discovers that the nuke attacks long blamed on Israel were in fact carried out by a fanatical Muslim billionaire who intends to take over the nation by launching an unprecedented attack on the Christian South. Intending to verify her explosive findings, Sarah must go into hiding, where she is joined by her lover, former elite Muslim warrior Rakkim Epps. The two zigzag their way across an unrecognizable U.S., dogged by a psychopathic rogue assassin named Darwin. Ferrigno deserves props for his imaginative portrayal of a futuristic America, which is often highlighted through startling details, as when the second half of the Super Bowl must wait on midday prayers. But his new novel lacks his usual edge and his signature dialogue. A future I hope we never see

I won't rehash the storyline here; you can read that in the publishing reviews.

I will preface by saying that I spent five years living in the Middle East, and I have to say that based on my experience Ferrigno accurately captures the mind-set and atmosphere that pervades societies run by Muslim theocrats.

This book should serve as a wake-up call for those who value traditional Western values in today's atmosphere of radical Islamo-fascism. In that respect it's very Orwellian.

But better still, there's a really good story wrapped into this package, and I jammed through this book very quickly. The characters are fully fleshed out, engaging, and believable. You really like the good guys, and hate the bad guys. Darwin, the "Assasin", is a terrific villain; complex, many-faceted, extremely dangerous; kind of an athletic Hannibal Lechter without the medical degree. The plot is tight, complex and believable; the climax is satisfying.

I really recommend this book. Ferrigno's done a great job, and this has prompted me to see if he's written other books which I haven't yet read so I can get hold of them.

Ferrigno: I Can't Wait For The Sequel! (Just Brush Up On The Islam A Bit)

Robert Ferrigno does make some glaring mistakes in his presentation of Islam. In the new society it seems as if he freely mixes Sunni and Shi'ite together, naming an airport after Khomeini (a Shi'ite), yet using the term, "imam" in the Sunni sense of the word. And Ferringno clearly has little understanding of the exclusively Shi'ite practice of "muta'a" ("pleasure marriage" or temporary marriage). There is more to Shi'ite temporary marriage than Ferrigno has it with johns driving into the ruins of Disneyland, banging hookers and when finished merely pronouncing three times: "I divorce thee." Muta'a is not condoned or practiced by the world's majority Sunni Muslim community. Even most Shi'ites today are embarrassed of it. As for calling the headscarf "habib," Ferrigno never called it any such thing! The term he uses is "hajib" which is probably an honest to goodness typo for "hijab" (by the way, "hajib" was the term used for a court official in Muslim Spain and North Africa).

I believe the previous reviewer is trying to make Ferrigno out as some sort of bigot or islamophobe. I don't see it. Rather, although there is harsh prejudice against the remaining Catholic minority, he shows that the majority of Americans in the world of PRAYERS FOR THE ASSASSIN are now Muslims and they just want to live their lives in peace and happiness. That is why there is a small faction of hardliners (the Dark Robes) trying to impose a Talibani style of society and also why you have the Hasan-i-Sabah wannabe, the "Old One" conspiring to bring about the rebirth of the Caliphate. Let us also not forget that the heroes of this story, Rakkim and Sarah, are both proud Muslims.

All that being said, let me just add that this is still one fantastic novel. Ferrigno incorporates the best elements of the thriller and the alternative history and future shock genres into one supercharged and gripping tale of a broken and demoralized America.

I believe Ferrigno is making some clever and pointed statements about the spiritual state of affairs in America with this book.

We now live in a land where the mall, not the church, is now the center of town. In a time when you need to wait in line for almost anything but a seat at church. More Americans nowadays care to know every triviality about their favorite actors, athletes, singers, even pornstars, than what is going on in their government, their religion, their world. Ferrigno created a world where these negative trends and selfish pursuits of ours might take us. The celebrity and the popular culture are what really matters for far too many Americans today. Note that where in real life the values of faith and family and tradition are still strong - the South and Utah, or amongst the Latino Catholic populations in the Southwest, Ferrigno has them in his novel to be either independent of the Islamic Republic or on the verge of rebellion.

Ferrigno's seems to understand that when you no longer believe in 'something,' you are now open to believe in 'anything.'

art becoming life

I read this book in 2 days, couldn't put it down, or shut up about it!If you enjoyed "The Handmaid's Tale" by Attwood, you'll recognize the world tipped on it's head, though with even greater horror and worse, the very real plausibity of it! Just look around and watch the Islamic world riot and terrorize and threaten beheadings for caricatures/cartoons published in Denmark, and listen for the moderate islamic voices--they're no where to be found. You'll love the strong characters who stay with you long after you've finished reading. You will also no longer view current world events in the same way. You will shudder at the looming possibity. Another fun task I had was looking for areas that seem like "clues" for a message hidden in the "mistakes" in the text. I'm reading the book again with a closer eye toward this. Such as the character Marian on one page being referred to as Miriam on the page opposite; and the scene in the roller rink described on the left hand page and the character sliding on the ice on the opposite page; then further down the page going back and referring to the singing wheels on the skates! No way is this a sloppy book. I'm having great fun with it. Haven't enjoyed a book like this in quite awhile. So I'm off to buy 4 more books to give to friends.
